We may not have played well, but we could lose our next 11 ACC games and still finish better than we have historically. Keep it up Ladies. The turn around has been impressive.

While it was a win, they really struggled tonight against a bad UVA team. You have to get some of those type wins regardless of the sport. Congrats to VB, 7-2 ACC, good job!

When did I say they didn't deserve to win? Just looks like they came out unfocused every game against the last place team in the ACC, however they did rebound so that's good for them.

It'll be interesting to see if Duke can rebound and salvage their season. They have the talent on paper, but it hasn't translated to results. A rematch at Cameron looms in a couple of weeks, but first need to take care of business at home against BC and Maryland. Agree tonight's performance seemed a bit lackluster, but UVa was a good opponent to play that way against. They did what they needed to do, getting 2 wins this weekend after suffering their first 2 conference losses last weekend. Good job not letting the L's build.

cbj,
thanks for posting that spreadsheet... you may want to shift the "W,L,PCT" over one column.
Today's matches UNC at VPI FSU at Maryland Miami at BC
Tuesday Wake at Duke
Everyone will have played 9 of 20 ACC matches. Almost the halfway point of the season.
Next weekend: NC State/UNC host Maryland/BC GT/Clemson host FSU/Miami VPI/UVa host Duke/Wake
These teams will not play each other a second time this season. Scheduling quirk of the ACC volleyball schedule is playing 20 of a possible 22 ACC matches.
The ACC is one of six conferences that does not play a conference tournament at the end of the season before the NCAA tournament begins.

It's great to get two needed wins to keep within striking distance of first place. Keep playing tough Ladies.

Re: Wolfpack Volleyball 2012 (17-3,7-2) 10/13 beats Virginia
Is NCAA volleyball also a 64 team field? If so, RPI 31 is a pretty good spot to be in for an at-large bid, isn't it? Key for us will be to repeat the strong performances against UNC and the four teams just below us on the 2nd time through. Unfortunately, UNC, Duke, and GT will all be on the road... Yes, it's a 64-team field. But consider the automatic bids from the smaller conferences, and consider that none of those will be among the top 30 or 40 (whether it's the AVCA poll or the RPI).
NC State is among the top 40 in both of those, and at least as of now, I think that's a good position to be in.

^, ^^, & ^^^ Volleyball boardFair warning, ACC volleyball isn't highly thought of here. But it's a good place for passionate fans of the game. There are some knowledgable "stats" guys here as well. That's a linked "RPI" thread. Rick Kern(subscription for much of the site)If we keep our RPI in the 30's, we should be in solid position. 40's? It starts to unfold like basketball. The bubble. waynevb highlights an important part of the equation-the automatic qualifiers from weaker conferences. I felt like we had a shot from the beginning if we could compete for that 5th/4th/3rd position. I'm just enjoying the season. Stay healthy. Winning will take care of itself. So proud of the progress the program is making. Want the same thing for all of our sports at NC State.

Re: Wolfpack Volleyball 2012 (17-3,7-2) 10/19 Boston College
Wake 3 Duke 1
We're approaching the 2nd half of the conference season.
The 64 team tournament will be announced on Nov. 25th.(in a just over 5 weeks).
(7)PAC12-Stanford, UCLA, Oregon, Wash., USC, Oregon St., ASU(?), (9)Big 10-Neb., Penn St., Minn., Purdue, Ohio St., Michigan, MSU, N'western(?), Wisc.(?) (6)WCC-BYU, San Diego, Pepperdine, St. Mary's, Santa Clara, San Francisco(?) (6)SEC-Florida, Kentucky, Tenn., Texas A&M, Arkansas, Auburn(?) (4)Big 12-Texas, Kansas St., Oklahoma, Iowa St. (4)ACC-Miami, FSU, UNC, NC State, GT(?) (3)MVC-Creighton, Northern Iowa, Wichita St. (2)Big East-Louisville, Marquette, Notre Dame(?) (1)WAC-Hawaii (1)Sun Belt-WKU (1)A10-Dayton/VCU (1)MAC-Ohio/Bowling Green/W.Michigan (1)Big West-Pacific/UCSB/LBSU (1)MWC-CSU/Fresno St.,/New Mexico (1)SoCon-Furman/CofC
Conference Tournament Champions (16) Big Sky, CUSA, Southland, Summit, CAA, Ivy, OVC, Horizon, ASun, America East, Big South, MEAC, NEC, MAAC, Patriot, SWAC
There are more that 64 teams listed above. If the season ended today, I don't think there would be any doubt about NC State being in the NCAA tournament. Half the ACC season remains. Winning on the road at VPI and UVa last w/e was important. It will be that way for the rest of the season. We're fun to watch.
Honestly, it's amazing that we're even having this conversation with respect to where the program was just a few years ago. The players and staff deserve a tremendous amount of credit for all their hard work turning things around so quickly. Hopefully we'll have good crowds in Reynolds this w/e to support them. They've earned it.

In the above posts we are shown to have an RPI of 31 and that the bubble starts for teams in the 40's. So if the season ended today, we would be in. If we play the second half of the season like we played the first then we are in. We are only on the bubble if we start to lose more and fall into the rpi 40's.

We also need to avoid losses against league weak sisters Wake, UVa, Md., and BC. I believe our 2nd game vs. Wake will be there, and we have Md. and BC coming in this weekend to complete the first pass through the ACC. I'm a little worried about how unbalanced the schedule is (first 11 ACC games: 7 at home, 4 on road, and I presume last 9 will be 4 at home, 5 on road). Question re: ACC volleyball--are you permanent "partners" with your traveling buddy team (UNC for us) so that you will always play them home and away?

Question re: ACC volleyball--are you permanent "partners" with your traveling buddy team (UNC for us) so that you will always play them home and away? This is key. In my opinion, NC State has put themselves in this position by doing one very important thing -- beating they conference opponents that they *should* beat. Not only have they done that, but they've also beat some perennially good teams like UNC, Clemson, GaTech, and Duke (and holy hell at the season Duke is having...wow). Like you said, NC State needs to keep doing that in the second half. It starts with BC and Maryland this weekend, and let's remember that BC just took Miami to the limit in 5 sets. Same can be said for the following weekend at Wake and at Duke, and also our final home stand against UVa and VaTech. The rest of the matches are all against potential NCAA teams -- FSU, Miami, UNC, GaTech, Clemson (maybe not NCAA, but it's away so tough match). Keep winning the games they *should* win, and roll the dice in the others. To answer your question, yes there are permanent travel partners who will always have a home/away series. The ACC, similar to the Pac12, has a slightly unbalanced schedule in that there are only 20 conference matches instead of 22. For each set of travel partners, there's another set of travel partners which you only play once. For NC State (and UNC), they play BC and Maryland just once this season.
