RE: Carolina Hurricanes 2012-13.1 (8-5-1) 2/21 Jets 7pm
Per Chip's tweets Pitts not at the morning skate. Murphy working on the PP. Looks like we'll get to see the kid tonight.
Lots of confusion even from hockey folks on this, but it appears the only way Murphy could be called up from Juniors was for the Canes to have three players at his position out (Gleason, Pitts, McBain). If/when any one of these are available Murphy has to go back to Kitchner immediately.
According to Chuck Kaiton this is the first Canes/Whalers mid-season call up from Juniors since '83.
Ron Francis got called up in '81 and never went back.

Like I mentioned earlier, I thought after that initial grace period at the beginning of the year, if a kid was called up to the NHL he didn't have the option of returning. Have read the same as you today about the emergency call up, so that's a good thing for Murphy and the Canes (starting him on the contract clock).

Hoping for a good game tonight. Got seats on the glass right near the Winnipeg bench, gift for Mrs. Lumberwolfs b-day. I haven't sat this close since the mid 80s at a Whalers/Nordiques game at the "Mall" (aka Hartford Civic Center) when I got to sit right behind the net.
Looking forward to seeing how Murphy plays tonight, definitely need a spark!

Jets have a scare at their morning skate. Another skate blade to the leg incident. blogs.newsobserver.com/canes/j...l#storylink=cpyNoel had left the ice but rushed back out after learning of the freak injury. He said he talked to Redmond, 24, who he said was "awake and everything was fine." "He was in some pain and probably a little shock as to what took place," Noel said. "But other than that he was coherent going into the ambulance." Noel said his team "would be rattled" with such a shocking injury and wasn't sure how it would affect tonight's game against the Canes. "It's a teammate," he said. "There's not much you can say. It kind of throws a wrench in your pregame. But we'll get it solved by the time we get back here at 5 o'clock."

"It's a teammate," he said. "There's not much you can say. It kind of throws a wrench in your pregame. But we'll get it solved by the time we get back here at 5 o'clock." I'll preface my comments by saying that I'm not a hockey player, and have never seen their equipment kit up close, so perhaps something like what I'm about to suggest already exists. But as a College of Textiles grad, I wonder if there isn't some way to incorporate a high-performance fiber (i.e. Kevlar, etc.) into a player's socks to offer some protection from these types of injuries. Perhaps it's already been tried and the incorporation of the fiber negatively affects the wearability of the sock too much, but if not, some body ought to look into it. Would be pretty cool if the Canes and State could take the lead on it, as there's already a partnership between the Canes and State through the joint use of PNC Arena. If a breakthrough was made, could potentially be some good publicity for State and the COT!

Yeah, they are available. www.hockeymonkey.com/firstar-h...pro-series.htmlCBC on the reluctance of some players not to wear them. www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/opini...-or-sleeve.htmlCould a Kevlar sock or sleeve have saved the season of Ottawa Senators defenceman Erik Karlsson? Teemu Selanne certainly thinks so. And he's not alone. Nineteen years ago, when Selanne was with the Winnipeg Jets, his season ended when his right Achilles tendon was sliced 80 per cent through by the skate blade of Anaheim Ducks defenceman Don McSween. Karlsson had surgery on Thursday morning to repair his left Achilles tendon that was lacerated 70 percent through by the skate of Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke the evening before. Senators general manager Bryan Murray reported that Karlsson, the reigning Norris Trophy winner, is expected to miss the next three to four months and that "his year is finished at this time." Karlsson was not wearing a cut resistant sock or sleeve. Murray remarked that some players find the sock too bulky or cumbersome. Selanne disagrees. "I feel bad for Erik," the 42-year-old Ducks forward told Hockey Night in Canada's Elliotte Friedman. "I do hope though that instances like these show players that we should all wear the protective sleeves and socks. They are available these days. You can't even tell that you are wearing them and it really helps in this situation. Maybe it should be mandatory." Selanne went as far as demonstrating how protective these preventative socks can be by running his skate blade over one.

Figured there should be something like this out there, but I'm kind of shocked that some players don't want to wear them. I know that hockey has an "old school" element to it, but I've got some familiarity with kevlar reinforced fabrics (I've got a fishing glove with some kevlar in it) and it a) absolutely makes a difference in protection, and b) doesn't really make a difference in the performance of the glove in terms of flexibility. Also, based on the first link you posted, they are pretty cheap too. To me, no reason not to wear them. For less than $100, the Sens would likely still have their best player. Maybe the NHL won't mandate them, but if I was an owner, I would strongly encourage all of my team to wear them.

PNC may need to lay a new sheet of ice before the game tonight. Have to think this bled a fair amount. 3-hr surgery.
@mirtle: Jets defenceman Zach Redmond underwent surgery for three hours today to repair a laceration to his femoral artery and vein. Horrific injury.

Was just about to say that Murphy looks a little bit jittery out there, but that is to be expected in game 1. He's a little quick to dump the puck out of his zone. But better than I expected, to be honest. Definitely not shy about jumping into the rush.

RE: Carolina Hurricanes 2012-13.1 (8-5-1) 2/21 Jets 7pm
So if I'm understanding Tripp there, the Canes have to send Murphy back down when the D gets healthy, regardless of how many games he plays. But if he plays more than 5 games, it will count as starting his rookie contract.
Well, that's most unfortunate. I would presume the Canes would never let the 6th game happen unless they suffer several season ending injuries in the next week. But in all likelihood, he'll be in Kitchener by the end of February.
