Bruins score a shorthanded goal to start things up after the D and Cam fall asleep back there.

Ellis looked better in his game and 2/3s than Cam has looked.  D is horrible though.

Brutal turnover by McBain led to a breakaway, but Cam actually made the 1-on-1 save.

Canes look out of gas.  Not that Boston is killing it, but they are the only ones getting decent scoring chances in the 3rd.

You're right. Sadly. They looked more crisp after back-to-back icings than we did right there losing on that goal. ******* pathetic.

First game I watched this year. Offense looks solid (aside from the 2nd PP unit). Defense still isn't very good, Ward looks bad. Same issues they've had for a while.

Bruins are just a really good team and the Canes were chasing for the majority of the 3rd. The O looks decent. Would be nice if Westgarth would actually fight sometimes and LaRose and Dwyer could finish occasionally. Semin looks great so far but would be nice if players would try to find him more often as IMO he has the best shot on the team. D looked terrible but I guess that's expected. Ward looked more aggressive and that's good but went down too quickly and that's bad. Looks like a 9th place finish to me if D depth isn't acquired.

Off the ice, Carolina recalled Andreas Nodl and placed forward Zach Boychuk on waivers.

The move to place Boychuk on waivers was necessary in order for the forward to be assigned to the Canes’ AHL affiliate in Charlotte. Teams around the NHL have until noon Thursday to put a claim on the former first round pick. If that claim is placed, Boychuk would have to remain on the NHL roster for the remainder of the season.

Blown 1st round pick for the Canes. Maybe a new place will be good for him, supposedly will get a chance on Malkin's line, but he never materialized for the Canes. They knew some team would likely take a flyer on him when they placed him on waivers.

The last sentence of the article is dead on the money:

"My guess is that Canes fan is right: he’s middle of the pack. Your average NHL starter."

And the last word in your only sentence is the crux of the problem. In a salary cap system, performance on the ice has to come close to matching the cap hit each individual is assigned.

Put Ward on a team with a halfway decent defense and his performance would look a lot better. The winning goal Monday night is a prime example. The Canes can't clear the puck, the defense breaks down and Boston gets a shot on the open net.

Ward and Ellis are playing behind the same defense.

Stats this year:
Ward is facing 27 shots/game and is giving up a goal every 7.2 shots.
Ellis is facing 27 shots/game and is giving up a goal every 27 shots.

Ward has played in 10 periods, giving up a goal every 0.67 of a period of play.
Ellis has played in 4 periods, giving up a goal every 2 periods of play.

From Chip (as mentioned earlier, they knew he'd likely get claimed):

- Rutherford on Boychuk being claimed by Pens: "We knew it might happen. We're happy for him, that he's getting another chance."

- Rutherford on what kept Boychuk from being NHL player: "With us, his consistency."

I'm going to need a slightly larger sample size before I draw conclusions.

That said, Ellis was fantastic on Friday.

Hard to be consistent we're you're being shipped back and forth every couple of games and then your line combo is changing every game.

My view is not frustration that Boychuk is leaving, it's that a first round pick was used on him in the first place.

Outside of the can't miss "superstars" on the roster (and one could even make arguments there, perhaps), most of the Canes' "homegrown talent" has been putrid at best.

Edit: And I know he was "highly rated" - the 8th best N. American skater.  Just frustrating how other teams seem to be able to reload through the draft and we just..don't.

^^ Not sure about you, but from my amateur eye, Boychuk showed me absolutely nothing. Didn't bring anything to the game when he had his chances. He had opportunities with the top lines through the years. Nothing. Now, who knows, maybe he goes to Pittsburgh and finds his place. If he gets to man one of the wings on Malkin's line, than he should have plenty of opportunities. Just as he did playing with Staal and others.

As Felonious stated, him leaving is no big deal to me. The pick was a bust for the Canes. Plenty of 1st round busts through the years across the NHL. It happens.

Ellis has played one game against a pretty average Buffalo team.  Ward beat them too ya know.

Far too early for stats by the way....

Lack of desire and a poor work ethic basically has haunted Boychuk during his tenure with the Hurricanes.

Watch - he will go on and be a serviceable NHL'er who finds his game after leaving the Hurricanes like quite few before him.

I'll lay half the blame at his feet and the other half at the Hurricanes inability to develop players.
