Agree about Forsberg.. I was already looking forward to seeing him on the Canes. Jordan is a mix of Eric and Brandon and we need more scoring punch which it gives us. Sutter is a 3rd line max center, Jordan is a bonafide 2nd line so we have the best 1st and 2nd line center combo since 06. Everyone said Forsberg was going to stay over seas so who knows how long, if at all, before we saw him actually play. We need help now, not in 3 years

J. Staal is a cup winner and proven scorer who will probably also make Eric happier. I have never been high on Sutter, so I think at the very least that part of the trade is even. Who knows what Doumelin would have been in the pros. Like someone said, when a proven player WANTS to play here, we would be fools not to do it for want of a bunch of maybes and never-will-bes

i hate having to give up sutter, but for a player of jordan staal's ability, you have to give up something good. pittsburgh was willing to give him 10 years. that alone says how good he is. he turned down 10 years in a traditional hockey town to come play for the canes. that says a lot about the canes franchise.

Jordan Staal is an elite player? He's never scored over 50 points in a season. Nothing elite about that. RedWolfII wrote:

Thanks Carolina. GO Pens!!! Seriously how good is Sutter? Staal is decent and big and young..... but..... He only has one year left on contract . I think he will re-sign with the Canes. This might be a trade that benefits both teams. I need Sutter report? ACC hope next year!!!

Sutter is a poor man's Staal. Defensive specialist with decent offensive skills. Character guy who was given the A on his sweater at the age of 22. Pittsburgh - if Crosby and Malkin are healthy - is a perfect place for him as a 3rd line center.

Jordan was drafted #2 in the 2006 draft in a year the Canes didn't even have a first round pick.

They never had a chance at this Staal. He went #2. They could have taken Marc one year, but that was going to be a reach at #3 where they took Jack Johnson. Of course, Marc would have been a good pick in retrospect, but the Canes still got Gleason out of all that.

That's right, my bad, I was thinking of Marc, they were real high on him, but took Johnson instead, and that turned into us getting Gleason from the Kings, iirc? Maybe Seidenburg too? Marc has turned out to be a solid Staal brother as well.... wolfpackernc wrote: --------------------------------------------- --- packattack95 wrote:

Actually I am fine with dealing Sutter but they should of held on to the pick or Dumoulin - dealing all 3 was too much.
Watch - this will be the year Sutter finds his offensive game and blossoms into a scoring forward.
Would of loved to seen Nash or Parise in a Canes sweater ........ pipe dream I know but E.Staal centering Nash would of been lethal.

^I've always thought I'd like to see Sutter as a 2nd line man to see if his scoring would go up. He got no help with the Canes on the 3rd line and teams could focus on him cause his linemates didn't produce enough.

Sutter has never scored over 40 pts. ^ Staal had 50 points this past year in only 62 games. Impressive.

I'd be surprised if they were competitive in pursuing Parise now that they have some serious money tied up in J. Staal. They might surprise me but for a team that's not usually a big spender to have more than a couple all-stars is rare. I think they pursue a lower-level FA instead.

He had 50 points in 62 games this year - that's 65 or so in a full season.
As for Parise - I don't think that's over, but I think JR realizes that everyone is going after him so it's tough to sell Carolina over any of his other options.

RE: Hurricanes 2012-13 trade Sutter & #8 Pick for
I was in the "overpaid" camp too. Time will tell. If Doumalin(sp?) develops into a stud d-man the Canes may regret this trade.
But that is what it took to get J. Staal. Word is the Rangers made an offer. So did Anaheim who supposedly offered Bobby Ryan. That says something about how good a player J. Staal is. Plus dominating centermen are hard to come by. The Canes now have two. (I'm not buying Eric Staal to wing just yet)
Hopefully the Canes can add a winger this summer. Don't think it'll be Parise though. I wonder what it would take to get Ryan from the Ducks. He's going somewhere and soon.

Re: Hurricanes 2012-13 trade Sutter & #8 Pick for J.Staal
As a Pens fan I can tell you that you'll absolutely love Jordan. He has always been one of my favorite players. Not only is he a great on the offensive end but he is rock solid on the defensive end as well, not to mention he was one of our top penalty killers in Pittsburgh. On any other team he'd be a first or second line center. I would definitely move Eric to the wing if you put them on the same line as Eric is more of a goal scorer (obviously) than Jordan. And for those who say the Canes gave too much - only time will tell, particularly since a large component of the trade involved a couple of young guys who have yet to prove themselves on the NHL level. If the young guys live up to expectations then the Pens probably got the better of the deal; if they don't then the Canes win big time as Jordan > Sutter.

Sutter has never scored over 40 pts. “Jordan is an elite two-way player who possesses a rare combination of speed, size, scoring ability and defensive responsibility,” said Rutherford. “For his young age, he has a wealth of NHL experience, including winning the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in 2009. And he is obviously a natural fit for our team in joining our captain, his older brother Eric.

I actually heard Friday morning that Staal was likely coming. Heard from a pretty good person that would know. But I think there is another big name guy coming to the canes as well, bigger name than Staal. The guy who told me this was more sure of the other guy than Staal. Said the canes are adamant about bringing in 2 top forwards. Jordan Staal will play forward with Eric at center. Go watch the piece on ESPN website where they talk about this trade. They flat out say that Jordan Staal is not a center, even though he played 3rd line center for the Penguins. Said this was a fair trade, that Sutter is the perfect 3rd line center for the Penguins and that Jordan is perfect for the Canes. But look for another really big name to the Canes possibly soon.

They have two D men that are UFA's in Spacek ($3.8million) and Allen ($2.9million) and at best one of them comes back. JR has plenty of people in the system to play around with as trade bait including shipping LaRose, Joslin, etc to change the team's dynamic.

Sutter has never scored over 40 pts. Jordan missed 20 games and was the 3rd line center. given the added ice time he will get with the Canes, he will easily be a consistent 30-35 goal scorer. Sutter will never be that kind of scorer. Plus, Jordan gives us size we desperately needed and he as strong defensively as Sutter. there is no comparison between the 2 players. Dumoulin is no top 2 defenseman. the draft pick may be, but who knows at this point. I think it was a GREAT trade for us. if we can get 1 more proven scorer, we will have 2 outstanding lines.
