what little I heard was JR saying the Hurricanes would need to earn the fans back, "seat by seat" if that was what it took.

I have not heard entire press conference, but it appears to be here.

Indeed, that's very strange timing.

Wonder if this impacts the Luongo-to-Toronto rumors one way or the other.
Rumor was that the Kessell trade to Boston was a big part of this.  Burke got suckered on that one pretty good, to the Bruins huge benefit.

Looks like the Canes will be in Florida on the 19th. From a Panthers blog:

"According to what Panther President Michael Yormark said in an interview on the Big "O" Show on 640 AM Tuesday evening, the Panthers will open at home on the 19th. No opponent was confirmed but Yormark said there is a good chance it will be the Carolina Hurricanes"

I don't know what y'all see in Semin.

The guy sucks the alternate pronunciation of his name, and he's lazier than a Obama phone user.

As for the shortened season helping the Hurricanes...don't see it.  This bunch are notoriously bad starters.  Come February and March of a normal season, the Hurricanes are almost unbeatable, but during the first three months, they're usually awful.

If they RAISE ticket prices, they might as well pack it in.

You are looking at it wrong - they skipped the first three months.  Now they just get their good February and March months.

Umm ... Bettman works out of the NHL's New York office, and you'd expect there to be a lot of Canadians involved in the league office since well over half the players in the NHL are in fact Canadian. Most Canadian NHL fans hate the guy and feel like he's not in touch with the spirit of the game ... mostly because of his background as a labor lawyer for the NBA.

I think the guy is a bridge troll of a human being but being Canadian or having a Canadian perspective is not among his issues.

^^^ The pessimist line of thinking can't look at it that way. With a shortened season, goalie play will be critical. Hopefully Ward will play up to his contract.

As for ticket prices, the Canes are one of the cheapest tickets in the league. Especially premium seating. If the cap floor rises, and it will rise (one of the downfalls to a strong Canadian dollar, wolfpackernc), the Canes will probably be forced to raise ticket prices closer to the league average. I would think they'd raise premium seats significantly and the others marginally.

NHL Fan Cost Index in link.

- comprises the prices of four (4) average-price tickets, two (2) small draft beers, four (4) small soft drinks, four (4) regular-size hot dogs, parking for one (1) car, two (2) game programs and two (2) least-expensive, adult-size adjustable caps. Costs were determined by telephone calls with representatives of the teams, venues and concessionaires. Identical questions were asked in all interviews.

That was about the only thing worthy of comment.

Except perhaps in Raleigh, hockey doesn't have a whole lot of casual fans.  They might have lost a few, but I doubt in the end that attendance numbers will be much different than they were last season for most teams.

I can pretty much guarantee the TD Garden will be banged out for every game, and the TV deal with NBC is signed and sealed.

I'll believe that fan cost experience a little more if they could tell me where they found a beer in the ESA, RBC, or PNC Arena for $5.75.

I remember paying $6 a decade ago.

The 'Canes have a major problem with the ticket prices.  Unlike the Rangers, Leafs, etc., where corporate accounts buy the premium seats and use them as gifts, perks, write-offs, etc., the 'Canes have very little in corporate support.  It's regular folks buying the seats in Raleigh, and raising the prices in an stagnant economy coupled with a lockout where both sides were at fault, isn't exactly going to improve attendance.

They probably have seats that are way underpriced, as well as some that are overpriced.  The Club seats are probably the most underpriced, while some of the upper level seats are overpriced.

Semin gets a bad rap because people just love to hear ***** like McGuire and MacLean bash people on NHL Network and NBC. He had two "down" seasons in Washington, and suddenly he's a terrible player. He's on a 1-year deal, 28 years old with something to prove. People are ******* crazy if they think he'll be a bust in Carolina. He'll put up some very good numbers here.

Ex-Cane Erik Cole taking some real heat (in the comments section, at least) for some comments he made about the new CBA:

Wrong time to say stuff like that when you just got your $4.5 million/year job back.

Perhaps, if the heat builds, he could be traded somewhere. Heh, heh.

HollySpringsWolf, you can't compare the Canes in any financial situation to big-market teams like Toronto or the Rangers. The Canes will never be at that level. You can and should compare them to similar markets like Nashville, San Jose on the high end, etc... Getting ticket prices to the level of many of those similar teams while maintaining or better yet, increasing ticket sales, should be the goal of the organization. Premium tickets is one area that the organization probably needs to look at hard in the future, if needed.

Schedule out. At Florida Saturday to open. Home opener is Tuesday against Tampa. 4 of first 6 games at home, then they go on their longest road trip of the year, 6 games. So after 12 games, could have an idea of expectations. Finish up with Rangers, @Pittsburgh.

Actually Boucher and Alt to Philly for forward Luke Pither. Pither to Charlotte.

McKenzie said last night that the Canes are looking around for some 4th line toughness (goon). Something needed, IMO.

Here's NBC's and NBCSN's TV schedule. No Canes games at the moment, but they do have flex options later in the season. NBCSN exclusive window (no local coverage allowed) appears to be Wednesday at 7:30.

www.nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/50443039

As far as FS Carolinas coverage of the Canes, I would imagine they'll televise all of the Canes games with the exception of those in the Wednesday night exclusive window of NBCSN. Any conflicts with other coverage will be placed on the alternate channel.

Also, the NHLN broadcasts are one of the teams playing local feeds. Most likely all of those games will be blacked out on the NHLN in the Canes TV viewing area (North and South Carolina) with the games televised on FS Carolinas.

ETA: Montreal is shelving Scott Gomez for the season. Told him to stay home, don't want him in the NHL or the AHL. Will pay him in full. Here's McKenzie's article on the Rangers and Wade Redden. Similar case and the Canadians chose option 3 for Gomez.

And just like that, the Canes get their goon with an NC State tie. Stewart goes to Kings for Kevin Westgarth. A Princeton grad, Raleigh citizen and Bill ******'s son-in-law. Makes sense. Was practicing with the Canes' players during the lockout when not representing the PA at meetings. One of the players who was present at many of the lockout negotiations.

Along with Stewart, the Canes send a '13 4th and a '14 6th to LA for Westgarth.

Thanks for the correction on the Boucher trade .......... I was just coming to correct it.

They actually posted it wrong on their facebook page - its now corrected.

The Westgarth move was a good one - he can throw down.

I'm getting a little excited again about hockey but the whole lockout thing is making for a bitter pill to swallow - that and some other general apathy I have for the Hurricanes organization.

They better come out of the gates winning - if not I think alot of fans just stay away for a good while.
