Bantamweight title fight looks like it could be a good one.

Renan Barao vs Michael McDonald

Barao on quite a winning streak

It's really a card with a lot of excellent and intriguing fighters. Grispi(can he avoid the pink slip against a relative tomato can? Remember when he was one fight away from the title?), Etim(always an exciting fighter, even when running into a heel with his face), Nedkov(love the undersized he-man type), Castillo(can he avoid back-to-back losses for the first time in his career against a tough opponent?), Te Huna(will he put his fist(s) partially through Jimmo's face or completely through it?), Jorge "Remember when I was a top 10 fighter in Japan" Santiago, Manuwa(this guy started fighting at 28?!).

Mostly looking forward to Swanson vs. Poirier and Barao vs. McDonald. Cub is on an absolute tear and I think he could KO Dustin(although that has technically never happened in his professional career).

Great card. Underrated card.

Bigfoot Silva to get title shot

Velasquez and Silva will rematch at UFC 160 on May 25 in Las Vegas, this time with the heavyweight belt on the line. Velasquez defeated Silva in just 3 and a half minutes in their first meeting at UFC 146

Junior Dos Santos and Alistar Overeem will match up as well in what will be a heavyweight showcase night

I like Bigfoot - but give him no chance against Velasquez. The winner of the Junior (despite what Velasquez did to him last time) and Alistar fight is the more viable fight.

Maybe, if Overeem didnt act like such an overconfident prick when he fought Silva, he would be fighting in the Main Event at UFC 160. He disrespected Silva, mocked him and his arrogance cost him the next shot at the title. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Big Foot KO Alistar.

That might have been the most blood I've ever seen someone lose in a major fight. It was uncomfortable to watch.

No doubt - that was a lot of fun. Arrogance cost him for sure. It was doubly cool that he gets his butt whipped after coming off a PED suspension.

I've seen the floor of some octagons in later fights during the night & it looked like some animal had been slaughtered earlier based on some of the blood still there.

yeah, Broner's fun to watch - I'm sure he'll have much more talent than Rees but Rees will be a big LW - he's won a belt @ 140 before.

RE: 2012 Boxing & MMA Thread

Friday Night Fights tonight featuring Delvin Rodriguez (26-6-3) against George "Comanche Boy" Tahdooahnippah (31-0-1) in a junior middleweight fight. Delvin is the more experienced guy and has been in with good opposition. But he's a bit long in the tooth at 32 given that he's been in a number of tough fights. The "Comanche Boy" is 34, undefeated, but very untested. He has mostly fought in the mid-west and most of his "notable" victories are pretty weak.

The co-feature is Bayan Jargal (17-3-3) against Chris Howard (14-2-1) at lightweight. Jargal has lost three of his last five and Howard has lost two straight. Both guys have lost when stepping up, so this is a pretty even fight.

RE: 2012 Boxing & MMA Thread

Saturday night, there's an IBF super bantamweight title fight on UniMas. The fight is between Alejandro Lopez (24-2) and Jonathan Romero (22-0). This is a pretty even matchup as both guys have similar quality wins (with both having their best stretch in their past 3 fights). Should be an excellent fight.

I'm not sure if they'll show a co-feature or not. UniMas has a much different setup than the old Telefutura approach. If it is shown, the main undercard fight is bantamweight fight between Hanzel Martinez (19-0) and Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. (15-0-2). Both guys are undefeated, but untested.

Two impressive finishes. Rodriguez defeats Tahdooahnippah by TKO in the 6th and Howard earned the KO victory over Jargal in the 3rd.

I wish the prelims were on TV, i know they are on Facebook...Swanson was expected to face Siver which would have been a barnburner, but replacing him with Poirer is just as exciting...lots of up and comers on this card, it's really good top to bottom...excited about seeing Manuwa and Gunnar again

RE: 2012 Boxing & MMA Thread

Two fights on HBO tonight:

As mentioned previously, Adrien Broner (25-0) takes on Gavin Rees (37-1-1) for Broner's WBC lightweight title. Broner is coming off the biggest win of his career in a dominant performance over Antonio De Marco. Rees briefly held the WBA junior welterweight title when he defeated shop-worn Souleymane M'Baye. He was knocked out in his next fight to lose the title. Since then, he's been mostly known for winning the Prizefighter tournament (which features 8 boxers competing in 3 round fights in a one-night tournament) at junior welterweight. He's the British and European lightweight champion. Most of his recent victories were over solid British fighters, but he's probably in way over his head tonight.

On the undercard, Sakio Bika (30-5-2) takes on Nikola Sjekloca (25-0) in a super middleweight fight. Bika won season 3 of The Contender and has fought in a number of big fights, losing three times in world title tries (against Andre Ward, Joe Calzaghe, and Lucian Bute). He's coming off an impressive stoppage win last year over Dyah Davis. Sjekloca is undefeated but very untested. His best win is a very close decision win against fringe contender Khoren Gevor. Much like Rees, he's probably in way over his head tonight.

On the untelevised undercard, there are two interesting fights as well. Vicente Escobedo (26-4) takes on Edner "Cherry Bomb" Cherry (30-6-2). Escobedo dropped a dominant loss to an overweight Broner in his last fight and is looking to rebound against Cherry, a guy that's rarely in a boring fight and hasn't lost since dropping a decision to Timothy Bradley back in 2008.

Also, Demetrius Hopkins (32-2-1) fights Charles Whittaker (39-13-2) for the USBA light middleweight title. Hopkins (nephew of Bernard Hopkins) was a prospect at junior welterweight and was on a solid run from 2006 to 2008. In December of '08 he was beaten in a split decision loss to Kendall Holt. He then moved up to welterweight, won two fights against journeymen and then lost to prospect Brad Soloman. He's won two fights at 154 pounds (which is far north of where he had most of his success) against very limited guys. Whittaker was on NBC back in September and lost to Gabriel Rosado. He's 39 and a long-time contender at 154. Could be an interesting fight, though.

Renan Berao is a badass, plain and simple. If I were Dominic Cruz, I'd keep dodging him with these "injuries" too.

Great win for Cub Swanson as well. He looked real strong.

Torn ACL if I am not mistaken, had surgery twice. I dont think he is dodging Barao, nobody needs to be in an MMA event with a bad ACL. Cruz's body rejected the cadaver ACL that was grafted to his knee, same thing happened to me and it is not fun.

Another impressive victory for Broner, and an entertaining fight overall. Rees came to fight and did very well the first couple of rounds. It was also interesting to see Gary Lockett in his corner. Locket lost to Pavlik as the announcers mentioned in his big step up fight, but he had also been on US TV a couple of previous times on the Showtime SHOBOX series.

Also on the undercard, Sakio Bika (now 31-5-2) defeated Nikola Sjekloca (25-1) by unanimous decision.

Demetrius Hopkins (33-2-1) won the USBA junior middleweight title when Charles Whittaker (39-14-2) retired after the 6th round. That's a fairly impressive result given that it took Rosado 10 rounds to stop Whittaker.

Edner Cherry (31-6-2) pulled off the upset over Vicente Escobedo (26-5) by knocking him out in the 6th round.

It has been officially announced that Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will take on Austin Trout on May 4th in Las Vegas. Interestingly, the long rumored Mayweather-Guerrero bout STILL has not been officially announced as there are several variables going on behind the scenes. The reason that is odd, is because we're now only 75 days from the event. Typically big money fights in boxing are announced at least 90 days out (to insure enough time for a proper media tour, secure sponsorships, foreign television deals, etc...). We're definitely not to the point of no return yet, but if we don't hear something in the next two weeks, the odds of that fight happening are slim. Something to keep an eye on.

Wow, that's a tough fight for both guys! Trout's a tall lefty who can box, fights like Paul Williams to a degree - who Saul was going to fight back in Sept before Paul's injury.

Also read Broner may now head to 140 because he doesn't think anyone up there can give him problems either. The guy doesn't lack for confidence in his abilities!

Yeah, Alvarez-Trout should be a good fight. I continue to be very impressed with Broner's talent. I'd still like to see his durability tested a little more but his talent level is great. He doesn't have the defense Floyd had at the same point in his career, but his power is arguably better. I'm excited to see him compete again. You're right about the confidence thing. I'm thinking a lot of that is part of the "image" he's selling, though. I think he gets how the business side of things works and is getting advice about how to market himself.

good points, I'd read Rees said Broner doesn't punch like a lightweight & this from a guy who's fought almost 40 fights & a lot of those @ 140.

Alvarez-Trout is a great fight. Supposedly, Alvarez would be in line for a fight later in the year against Mayweather if he wins in May. It shows a lot of confidence (or foolishness) from the Alvarez camp to take a fight that they could easily lose -- Trout is no joke.

I'm hopeful that Mayweather-Guerrero is signed soon. I think Guerrero will present a big challenge to Floyd if it comes off. Unlike some of Mayweather's recent opponents, Guerrero is still in his prime, has speed, isn't under-sized, and has a lot of mental toughness. He might present the best challenge to Floyd since the first Castillo fight.

Yes, but isnt it nice to see someone willing to take a fight against a tough opponent instead of ducking him just because it would be a tought fight,(yes that is a shot a Mayweather). I still think Mayweather will find an easier opponent than Guerrero or Alvarez.

Results from Saturday's UniMas card from Tijuana:

Jonathan Romero (23-0) defeated Alejandro Lopez (24-3) for the vacant IBF super bantamweight title by split decision. Scores were 116-111, 115-112, and 112-115.

Also, Alejandro "Cobrita" Gonzalez Jr. (16-0-2) knocked out Hanzel Martinez (19-1) in the 2nd round. Gonzalez's father was a featherweight world champion (and was also the first guy to beat Kevin Kelly).

Absolutely, it says a lot about Alvarez to have the willingness to take on a top guy. Of course, since Trout defeated his brother, I'm sure he's more than willing to step in the ring, so I guess it really says a lot about the confidence his handlers have in him to make this fight.

I really hope Mayweather fights Guerrero. I've heard rumblings of Devon Alexander, and that would be an absolute bore-fest. I know Carlos Molina is also interested in the fight, but that's another boring matchup.

Guerrero scores Mayweather pay-per-view showdown on May 4

Robert Guerrero has secured the pay-per-view fight of a lifetime against boxing pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 4 at the Las Vegas MGM Grand, a source with knowledge of the negotiations informed CSNBayArea.com Tuesday morning.

Re: 2012 Boxing & MMA Thread

^yeah, Floyd's really going to get paid:

LAS VEGAS - Undefeated eight-time world champion Floyd "Money" Mayweather, boxing's pound-for-pound king and the highest paid athlete in the world (Forbes, 2012), has entered into a groundbreaking pay-per-view deal with Showtime Networks Inc. and its parent company, CBS Corporation. Under the new deal, SHOWTIME PPV® will collaborate with CBS Corporation to comprehensively promote Mayweather's events on the CBS Television Network and via the corporation's expansive media platforms.

The deal-a unique revenue-sharing arrangement between SHOWTIME PPV and Mayweather-will enable him to fight up to six times over a period of 30 months, with the first mega-event taking place on May 4, 2013, when Mayweather will fight Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero. More details of this upcoming event will be announced shortly.

Mayweather's new deal is by far the biggest in the sport of boxing (specific financial details are contractually confidential). Mayweather is the PPV king and averages over 1 million PPV buys per event, which is the highest PPV buy average of any boxer in history. At this record-setting PPV performance level, if all six fights contemplated by this deal occur, it will be the richest individual athlete deal in all of sports.

Bookies and Vegas oddsmakers are getting ready for some real betting action, and I dont mean betting ON Mayweather, I mean betting BY Mayweather.
With all that cash coming in, Mayweather will be a true 'Whale' in Vegas.

RE: 2012 Boxing & MMA Thread

Floyd has not fought twice in one calendar year since 2007, if I'm not mistaken. We're supposed to think that it's possible he'll fight once every five months (6 fights, 30 month deal). Part of the reason he gets so many PPV buys when he fights is because he competes very rarely. It's actually a once-a-year event when he fights. It must mean 6 fights OR 30 months. This is a huge deal for the sport of boxing. Hopefully it signals more involvement for CBS. This is arguably the biggest hit that HBO Boxing has ever taken.

I'm surprised he's doing so well this soon, most fighters need to be in a big fight/beat a big name before they have ratings like this:

23-year-old lightweight world title-holder Adrien Broner was dazzling Saturday night in Atlantic City. HBO Boxing delivered 1.4 million viewers for the live first-airing of Broner vs. Rees on HBO World Championship Boxing. Viewership peaked at 1.551 million viewers during Broner’s 5th Round TKO win over Gavin Rees. In his seventh HBO appearance, this audience number is the highest ever for Broner. Viewership for Broner vs. Rees outperformed the audience for Broner’s last fight (11/17/12 vs. Antonio DeMarco) by 32%. Broner vs. Rees is available on the HBO ON DEMAND® and HBO GO® platforms.

Alvarez/Trout should be interesting, although I think Canelo should be a heavy favorite. I don't get Mayweather vs. Guerrero. Guerrero is tough but easy to touch and I can imagine this turns into a 12 round one-sided target practice for Floyd. Not sure what the draw really is.

That a really good rating.
