It's interesting, now there's a trend where ex boxers try MMA & MMA try boxing. I saw the Kimbo fight. It had a crazy ending. The dude that was fighting Kimbo had him rocked in the first round up against the ropes but couldn't get the finish. Kimbo rocked him a couple times, but got the KO win on a monster punch to the ribcage, the other guy just couldn't get up, I'd like to know how many ribs it broke or what happened, he was in serious pain.
I think MMA guys can have a lot more success in boxing than vice versa. James Toney got humiliated in his one and only fight. Though I would love to see a quick cat like Mayweather give it a shot and see what he could do. Some of the most punishing KO's you will see come from body punches. If put in the right place; like when B. Hopkins stopped De La Hoya, it can leave a guy writhing in pain in the ring.

Re: 2012 Boxing & MMA Thread
Three televised boxing shows this weekend for those interested.
On Friday night, ESPN2's Friday Night Fights starts at 9pm from Chicago and features an interesting main event between Carlos Molina (20-5-2) and Cory Spinks (39-7) at junior middleweight. Molina is best known for losing some questionable decisions in fights where he's stepped up against well-known fighters. He's drew with and lost to Julio Caesar Chavez Jr. in two fights most thought he won; he was disqualified in a fight against James Kirkland that he was winning when his cornerman accidentally entered the ring a few seconds early; and he dropped a close decision to Mike Alvarado; and he got a draw against Erislandy Lara that was a bit ridiculous. Spinks, son of Leon Spinks, is a former undisputed welterweight champion and two-time junior middleweight champ. He looked to be on the downside of his career when he was stopped by Cornelius Bundradge three fights ago when he lost his title, but he rebounded last time with a very good win over Sechew Powell to set this fight up. Molina-Spinks is an eliminator for the #2 spot in the IBF.
The co-feature is welterweight fight between Antwone Smith (22-4-1) and Jose Luis Castillo (64-11-1). Smith was a hot prospect at one point having beaten several other undefeated prospects and solid fighters. But his career was derailed when he went through a period of getting stopped by journeyman Lanardo Tyner on Showtime; dropping a fight against former champ Kermit Cintron; and then losing a fight to fringe contender Roberto Garcia. He got his best win last time out when he beat undefeated prospect Ronald Cruz by split decision. Castillo is a former long time champ at lightweight and junior welterweight who is probably best known for giving Floyd Mayweather one of the toughest fights of his career -- a fight that many thought Castillo deserved the decision in. He's now 39 and has battled weight issues in recent year. Three fights ago, he was in with Jorge Paez Jr. (who was on Azteca America last weekend). In his prime he would have knocked Paez out, but he ended up losing a unanimous decision. He got his career back on track to some degree in his last appearance when he beat Ivan Popoca, a fairly untested fighter with a bloated record.
Saturday night, Fox Sports has a live card starting at 11pm from Las Vegas. The main event is Frankie Gomez (14-0) versus Lanard Lane (13-2) at welterweight. Gomez is a fairly untested prospect who was featured on TeleFutura back in November. Lane has been in with much better opposition and has fought on Fox and Showtime (against Mike Dallas Jr. who was on Showtime this past weekend) in the past. He'll definitely be the biggest test of Gomez's career.
The co-feature is Mickey Bey Jr. (18-0-1) and Robert Rodriguez (7-2). So far, Bey has been more suspect that prospect. He got a dubious draw against Jose Hernandez (who pulled off an upset last weekend on FNF) and had a significant struggle against aged journeyman Hector Velazquez in a fight where he was dropped. Rodriguez has lost 2 of his last 3 and has been in with poor opposition. Should be a decision win for Bey. Also on the card, Joseph Diaz (1-0), a 2012 US Olympian has his second career fight.
Also, Saturday night at midnight, UniMas (which is what Telefutura is now known as) has a card starting at midnight from McAllen, Texas. The main event is a lightweight fight between Jose Felix Jr. (22-0-1) and Gerardo Robles (16-10). Felix Jr. stepped up against solid opponents in his last two fights winning against Luis Cruz and Meachor Major. Robles had a lot of early career losses, but has been on a roll of late. In his last fight, he pulled the upset over longtime contender Roger "Speedy" Gonzalez. The co-feature looks to be Casey Ramos (16-0) against Hardy Paredes (15-11). This is actually an easy touch for Ramos who has stepped in with solid opponents his last few fights.

There are some MMA fighters that are primarily stand up fighters who get exposed for their lack of ground game (seems to be more common with the old school single discipline fighters). If they have good take down defense and can keep the fight standing they can often win. If not they will often lose. For these stand up fighters a transition into boxing might be a good idea (like Kimbo). Most boxers don't have the take down defense or ground game for MMA and will just get taken down and beaten (like Tony).

Brazilian domination so far. Rashard Evans looks like he is on the downhill slide, did not look for the takedown very often, just wanted to play patty cake. Might have just seen Overeem and Evans(at 185) blow title shots tonight. Very disappointed in "Suga".

- Incredible knockout win on The Ultimate Fighter last night on FX. Uriah Hall (New York; 7-2) knocked out Adam Cella (Missouri; 4-0) with a devastating kick.
- The UFC prelims last Saturday on FX drew an average audience size of 1.9 million over the two hour broadcast. That ties the record for largest audience for the UFC on FX. It, along with a showing of Iron Man 2 following the prelims, also catapulted FX to beat all channels on television in primetime (including network channels) in males 18-49. Incredible numbers for them.

Thought Mayweather was going to fight "The Ghost" Guerrero or Canelo Alvarez next and now I hear he wants to fight Devon Alexander, I hope that is a joke or negotiation tactic. Either Guerrero or Alvarez would have been an interesting fight, I have no desire to watch Mayweather vs Alexander.

RE: 2012 Boxing & MMA Thread
Boxing tonight at 9pm on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights. The main event is a welterweight fight between Kevin Bizier (19-0) and former lightweight champion Nate Campbell (36-9-1). Bizier has an impressive record so far and has been moved quite well. He's been matched up against some of the usual durable suspects early in his career (like Edgar Ruiz and Mauro Lucero) and also has some wins over slightly higher level opponents like Lanardo Tyner and Christian Bladt. Campbell represents the biggest test for him to date, but Nate is past his prime (he's 40) and this is at a weight well above his successful days at 130 and 135 pounds. That said, Campbell is a solid puncher and did pull off two small upsets last year when most thought he was past it.
The co-feature is Tyler Asselstine (12-0) versus Baha Laham (10-0-1) at lightweight. Asselstine has faced the better opposition, but Laham has the more extensive amateur background (although Asselstine was also a solid amateur fighter).
A fight featuring former jr. middleweight champion Joachim Alcine was scrapped when his opponent came in too heavy.

RE: 2012 Boxing & MMA Thread
Only one televised boxing card on tonight. Unfortunately, it's a card that has sort of fallen apart with the originally scheduled fights falling apart and many of the replacements also pulling out. The card is televised live from Mexico City at 10pm on TV Azteca.
The main event is now a super bantamweight fight between Enrique Bernache (20-4) and Jonathan Lecona Ramos (11-12-2). Bernache was originally brought in as the opponent for former champion Christian Mijares, but Mijares pulled out. Another opponent was then lined up to fill in for Mijares, but he also fell out. Ramos is a very late sub. Bernache is a journeyman fighter who typically falls short when he steps up in competition (which made him a good test for Mijares). Ramos is a rugged journeyman who usually is game but falls short against good opponents. These two have fought once before with Bernache winning a split decision in a six round fight.
The co-feature is now a junior middleweight fight between Daniel Sandoval (30-2) and Martin Avila (14-10). Sandoval is a 21 year old prospect who has stayed very active after turning pro at 18. He's bounced between welterweight and super middleweight and got a very big win last year against Michel Rosales. Avila is a late sub for Miguel Callist, a former world title challenger. Avila is not a terribly good journeyman as he's been stopped a number of times. He's best known for fighting Austin Trout several years back.

Our tradition is to usually go out on Friday or Saturday, regardless of when Valentine's Day is (to avoid the crowds on the 14th). So we're celebrating the next night. I figure attendance for the fight will be sparse, though, due to Valentine's Day.

Results from last night's Azteca card from Mexico City:
