Cain by domination 50-45, 50-44, 50-43. Dos Santos swollen right eye looks like the Elephant Man.

Joe Rogan is a real biased announcer, you can always tell who his friends are by the way he calls it. Congrats to Cain on the win, but Rogan was really getting on my nerves tonight.

Well, Velasquez certainly proved me way wrong. JDS was absolutely gassed after that bad first round, he had nothing left.
Great win for Brunson, wasn't pretty, but who gives a **** at this point. Hopefully he can start climbing that ladder.

Scary thing about Cain is that, like Emelianenko before him, he could easily make light heavyweight. He just enjoys controlling heavyweights, I think.

So who's next for Velasquez? Do they do JDS/Valesquez 3? Winner of Big Foot Silva and Overeeem? (which is coming in February I do believe). Or do they do somethin dumb and give Roy Nelson a title shot or somethin like that?

If Overeem wins I'd guess it will be him. I'm picking him but Silva is someone no one should sleep on, though. wolfpack87 wrote: So who's next for Velasquez? Do they do JDS/Valesquez 3? That's what I'm guessing as well. It will be interesting to see what might happen if he gets beat though. I don't think Velasquez-Silva would be a big seller for Dana to put as a main event. I could be wrong though. I see things playing out with Overeem winning and getting the shot against Velasquez. Barring a questionable decision or something like that, I see the winner of Nogueira-Werdum in June getting the next title shot, barring an injury. At least IMO. slickrick00 wrote: If Overeem wins I'd guess it will be him. I'm picking him but Silva is someone no one should sleep on, though.

Watch out for Ben Rothwell in the future too. He fights like a completely different guy now, he looks a whole lot more dedicated to fighting, especially after that *** beating of Brendan Schaub earlier this year. He's got a big one coming up against Gabriel Gonzaga in January, and he's a pretty well-liked guy. If he keeps the wins coming, he could enter the title picture as well.

Re: 2012 Boxing & MMA Thread
LAS VEGAS – Strikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez (21-2 MMA, 11-1 SF) is expected to earn a UFC title shot in his first octagon appearance. Now it appears Daniel Cormier (10-0 MMA, 7-0 SF) might, too.
"[Cormier] is going to bring a lot of excitement to the heavyweight or light heavyweight division," White said following Saturday night's UFC 155 event in Las Vegas. "And he could be next in line to fight (Jon) Jones."

Isn't the Jan 12th Strikeforce fight their last? So either the fighters move to the UFC or to another organization.

Cormier is moving over after the last SF card. There is going to be an issue at HW as Cain destroyed Silva just last year and he and Cormier are teammates. Roy may not be on the level but may get the shot due to the situation. JDS then wins one or two more and then we get Cain/JDS 3. Could be real interesting to see what happens if Cormier comes in and wins a few.

Re: 2012 Boxing & MMA Thread
Rumors are the Cormier may try to cut weight down to fight Jon Jones instead of staying in the heavyweight division. He has a big frame but is only 5'11 and has cut weight to wrestle in the past. Looks to be pudgy at 238 so we shall see. Maybe Cain beat him up too much in practice workouts. I remember when Jones and Rashard Evans were teammates and would not fight each other, look how that worked out.

I intentionally don't do many updates regarding kickboxing but, in case there is anyone that follows it, I figured I'd mention that tonight in Japan there is a major one-night heavyweight tournament. The field looks like this:
Round 1: Semmy Schilt (Netherlands; 39-6-1) vs. Brice Guidon (France; 28-7) Sergei Kharitonov (Russia; 3-2) vs. Rico Verhoeven (Netherlands; 37-6-1) Gokhan Saki (Turkey; 77-15) vs. Raoumaru (Korea; ?) Anderson Braddock Silva (Brazil; 32-8-1) vs. Igor Jurkovic (Croatia; 44-5) Remy Bonjasky (Suriname; 77-11) vs. Filip Verlinden (Belgium; 38-6) Errol Zimmerman (Suriname; 76-16) vs. Jamal Ben Saddik (Morocco; 22-1) Peter Aerts (Netherlands; 104-30) vs. Mourad Bouzidi (Tunisia; 66-20) Daniel Ghita (Romania; 44-7) vs. Jhonata Diniz (Brazil; 7-2)

He's dropped the last two, but he was competitive in both against solid boxers. He's only 32 and he's really only been beaten by a guy with loaded gloves (Margarito) which he avenged and three guys that are pound-for-pound level fighters (Mayweather, PacMan, and the vastly underrated Trout). In contrast, Alvarez has only truly fought two guys who spent any time at 154 pounds. One was Ryan Rhodes (who was past his prime and never that great of a fighter) and the other was Shane Mosley (who is now back fighting at 147 and was way past his prime when he fought Canelo). Josesito Lopez and Lovemore N'Dou mostly fight at 140 pounds; Kermit Cintron, Alphonso Gomez, and Matthew Hatton were 147 pounders.

Good points but even Trout shook Cotto some, I could honestly see him taking a severe pounding in this fight. Cotto's not that big, a blown up JWW or even small welter. Canelo looks like a MW now or will soon be a solid 160.

Very true, Cotto's punch resistance hasn't quite been the same since the first fight with Margarito (and he was shaken a few times in the rematch). I like his current trainer's methods and think he'll have a good fight plan devised if the fight comes through. The odds are definitely against Cotto, but he has a decent chance in the fight. It's much better matchmaking than what's reportedly being put together for Adrien Broner's next fight (Gavin Rees -- a guy that's a step down from Antonio De Marco).

Re: 2012 Boxing & MMA Thread
Zhuge1 wrote: Pretty slow boxing weekend, but there is one live card tonight on Telefutura at 11pm from Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The main event is Gamalier Rodriguez (19-2-3) versus Rafael Tirado (25-8-2) in a super featherweight fight. Rodriguez is the favorite here as he's from Puerto Rico, but his record is heavily inflated as he's fought a series of fights in the Dominican Republic over the past couple of years against suspect "boxers." For the most part, he's lost or drew when he's stepped in with a solid fighter. Tirado isn't going to be a huge step up, but he's far better than guys Rodriguez has been fighting (who had records like 0-24, 2-23, 1-10, etc.). Tirado has fought mostly in his native Ecuador and at age 39 might not have a lot left. He's not beaten anyone of note, but has at least went 7 rounds with a former world champ (Simphiwe Nongqayi).
The co-feature is Isander Beauchamp (9-0-1) versus Omar Soto (15-8-1) at 112 pounds. Beauchamp has not fought anyone of note (journeyman Ernie Marquez is the only guy on his record I've heard of, and that fight went to a draw). Soto is a former contender at 105 pounds (straw weight) and has been in with some very good fighters at the lower weights. He struggled as he stepped up to 108, and then fought for a world title at 112 pounds but fell short. He is currently ranked at #15 by the WBC, #4 by the WBO, #3 by the WBA, and #13 by the IBF at 112. Results from this card which I finally got around to watching:
Beauchamp defeated Soto by 4th round TKO when Soto quit on his stool at the end of the round. I have no idea why he quit. Beauchamp really didn't land anything since Soto ran most of the fight. The 4th round was his best round and he finished it with a flurry against Beauchamp, but probably didn't do enough to win the round.
Rodriguez wins by 3rd round TKO after Tirado quit on his stool at the end of the round. Much better fight as Tirado actually tried to fight and Rodriguez legitimately hurt him a few times in the fight. Rodriguez called out Ponce de Leon after the fight which is pretty ridiculous given that this was by far his biggest win (over a 39 year old Ecuadorian journeyman no less).
Also shown were two featherweight fights where Kenneth Rivera (now 4-1) defeated Alexis Baez (now 0-4-3) by third round TKO, and Jomar Ortiz (now 2-0) defeated Juan Agosto (now 0-3).

Should be officially announced soon. good, should be a nice PPV card with those 2, I wonder who Canelo fights. Sets up nicely for the winners to meet in Sept. Rumor I heard was Alvarez vs. Cotto on the undercard. I just read it may be Canelo vs. Trout now on May 4th. Trout is a tall lefty who can box, a little like Paul Williams who Canelo planned to fight back in Sept.

2 weeks til the Bellator Light Heavyweight tournament starts. So glad they are going to be in HD on Spike TV now, no more grainy MTV2 crap.
King Mo and Babalu Sobral are in it, should be a great season.

It's now looking like the opponent for Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (Mexico; 41-0-1) on the May 4th event will be Austin Trout (New Mexico; 26-0). Trout holds a victory over Alvarez's brother, Rigoberto, back in 2011.

If so, that'd be a very interesting card. The Mayweather/Guerrero fight would be a good one and the Alvarez/Trout fight would be almost as good. I think Alvarez would be taking a huge chance in fighting Trout. I haven't seen Alvarez in with a really good boxer in his prime. He can certainly punch, but I'm interested to see how he'd respond against a good defensive fighter like Trout who would probably frustrate the hell out of him. slickrick00 wrote: It's now looking like the opponent for Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (Mexico; 41-0-1) on the May 4th event will be Austin Trout (New Mexico; 26-0). I'd love to see Cain Velasquez vs. "Bones" Jones. Different weight classes, yes, but I believe Jon Jones could easily move up to the Heavyweight division and will do so soon. Likewise, Velasquez could drop 20 lbs and meet him in the middle.

Bones has a large frame and could add some pounds, but Velasquez would be a fool to drop 20 pounds for a fight with Jones. Give Jones a couple of years to fill out those broad shoulders and he might stand a chance, just not now.

RE: 2012 Boxing & MMA Thread
Overall, a strong year for both sports.
The positives for boxing are numerous: - Solid numbers on HBO and Showtime. - Return to network television with two events in December (one on CBS and one on NBC). The CBS event drew an average of about 1.8 million viewers and the NBC events drew an average of about 1.6 million viewers. - Emergence of Saul Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez as real draws in this sport. Both do absolutely enormous television numbers in Mexico. - Solid performances continued on television throughout Europe, Australia, Japan, etc...
The only real negative I could think of was: - Three of the four biggest PPV draws in the sport (Pacquiao, Cotto and Chavez Jr.) went a combined 1-5 for the year. How that affects their sales/drawing power in the future will be something we have to keep an eye on. I don't think it will be a huge deal but it's something to keep in mind.
