RE: 2012 Boxing & MMA Thread
On the untelevised undercard of the Pavlik fight, Roger "Speedy" Gonzalez, who was a former staple on the old Univision Solo Boxeo Sunday afternoon shows, lost a majority decision in his bid to get back on track in his career against a 15-10 journeyman fighter.

- Bradley by very close decision. - Jones by TKO in the 10th after he settles in. - Rigondeaux by unanimous decision. This dude may be one of the elite pure boxing talents around, but at his age he's got to get all the title fights in that he can. - Rojas by decision
I hope I'm wrong in picking so many decisions. Boxing only gets a few heavily watch pay-per-views a year and could really use a card where a few guys close the show. I think Arum is hoping to puch Mike Jones as a future challenger for the winner of the main event. Well, you got the right winner in the Rigondeaux fight, but Kennedy didn't have enough of a chin to stand up to the shots from the Cuban. Second fight was pretty amazing. A complete snoozefest for 9 and a half rounds followed by an exciting finish.

Pac-man just got robbed. This is as insane a decision as I have ever seen in my life. Pac-man dominated this fight, and I mean DOMINATED, winning every round but one.
This is a ******** decision, plain and simple.

What can you say about that decision....
While I find the fights in boxing far more entertaining than what you get with MMA (which to be honest, I find alost unwatchable) ... at least the decisions are usually less controversial in MMA. How sad.

They should just have Harold Letterman be the sole official judge of every single fight. I don't think anyone's ever disagreed with his decision. Plus, you actually get an explanation round by round on his scoring.

Unbelievable. We had guys leave the fight party at the final bell because they knew Pac had won and didn't even need to hear the scorecards.

No doubt, I hate any fight that gets left up to judges, however I've been an avid follower of MMA for the last 10 years or so, and I just can't recall any fight where a title holding fighter landed more strikes, was more aggressive, and still lost the fight in a decision. I've never seen anything like what happened tonight.

LOL Boxing has always been corrupt. Add this result to the long list of rigged results. How stupid do they think we are?
The only significant fight in MMA history that I can recall being judged clearly wrong was Machida-Rua #1. It was a close fight, but Rua won it. The judges got it wrong. That decision was nothing like this one. Pacman clearly won the fight, and Bradley knew it.
F-Boxing!

RE: 2012 Boxing & MMA Thread
Final results from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas:
-147 lbs.- Tim "Desert Storm" Bradley (CA;29-0) def. Manny "Pac Man" Pacquiao (PHI; 54-2-2) by split decision (115-113;115-113,113-115) -122 lbs.- Jorge Arce (MEX; 60-6-2) and Jesus Rojas (18-1-1) fought to a technical Draw after a foul in the 2nd round. -147 lbs.- Randall Bailey (FL; 43-7) def. Mike Jones (PA; 26-1) by TKO in the 11th -122 lbs.- Guillermo Rigondeaux (CUB; 10-0) def. Teon Kennedy (PA; 17-2-2) by TKO in the 5th
I was at a concert with my wife and some friends so I didn't see the fight card. I know the aggregate Compubox stats are out and show an edge for Pacquiao. I want to see the round by round Compubox stats. Those should be available very soon. When they are I'll post them unless someone else beats me to it.

A couple of other things that need to happen to fix the sport are: 1) Unify the "Associations". You've got the WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO. There could be a champion in each weight class for each association and they're not required to fight each other. That's insane. Unify the associations, and that solves a lot of problems like having a clear-cut champion, fighter inactivity, and fighter mismanagement. 2) Pay-per-view. HBO and Showtime and the promoters may be making money hand over fist on pay-per-view, but to me it's killing boxing. How do you lure in new fans when they are forced to shell out $50 or $60 or more to even watch?

^ This. Boxing not having a national major television deal in the U.S. has really, really kept it from climbing back to where it once was. If you look at nations where boxing is doing fairly well (Germany, the U.K., Mexico, etc.) there are national broadcast television deals in place and the product overall has benefitted because of it. However, most of the big money potential tends to be available in the U.S. and boxing's complete lack of an established, well known television presence has done enormous damage. It really is too bad. I still think it has lots of potential here but it is so fractured and weak right now that it's struggling to find its way.
