RE: 2012 Boxing & MMA Thread

Loved Hector when he was a jr lightweight, probably the fastest fighter in the world in his prime. But he's also probably the biggest underachiever in boxing in the last 30 years arguably.I honestly hopes he pulls through, despite his shenanigans, seemed like a good guy.

Yeah, the worst beatings and the ones that cause the most fatalities usually occur when one fighter administers a terrible beating to the other but lacks the punching power to finish him (or where the guy getting beaten is to stupid or brave to know when to quit).
BlackRazor wrote: It will be interesting to see what Hatton has left. Manny KO'd him in 2 rounds & while brutal & nobody wants that, suffering a KO like that is better than a sustained beating of 10-12 rounds. Like when Margarito cheated & beat up Cotto for the whole fight. It's beatings like that that can be tougher to come back from.

I'd look for a late stoppage win by Hatton, but that's just my two cents. Depends on what kind of shape he's currently in.

right or guys who know they can take out a guy but carry him to administer more of a beating. I think Hopkins once talked about doing that to a fighter who talked too much before the fight so Bernard wanted the beating to last.

Yeah, I want to say it was Echols, but I could be wrong. Either way, the second Hopkins/Echols fight is truly a sight to behold. No two fighters had fouled each other that much since Roger Mayweather fought Pernell Whitaker, which was an entire fight of two guys hitting each other in the balls.

In the Echols fight, Hopkins got dirty early and often, and Echols responded by picking Hopkins up and body slamming him. They were willing to disquality Echols, but Bernard wanted to keep going, just to hurt his opponent. The knockout was hilarious, when Bernard executed a perfect shot after a clinch, when Echols still had his hands down.

Ray Robinson was famous for this, saying that he liked to "dress them up before he took them out." Then again, I think he has one of the only one punch fatalities in boxing history against Jimmy Doyle.

o2 level to the brain was cut off for too long. Bullets cut three of the four main arteries to the brain and he was held alive until they could be repaired, His brain is not alive and breathing machines are keeping him "alive" for now. Drug deal in progress when he was shot according to the article. Sad.

I just read that Andre Ward is fighting Kelly Pavlik in January. Given how a 43 year old Bernard Hopkins destroyed and utterly humiliated a prime and confident Pavlik, I can only imagine what a prime S.O.G. will do to him. Kelly better get used to fighting in hotel ballrooms, church basements, and obscure Indian casinos after this, because this will probably be the end of the line for him as any type of contender.

I know, how he thinks he has any chance @ all. I wasn't surprised Ward beat Dawson but the manner & ease he did it surprised me & Dawson's much more talented & faster than Kelly.

Absolutely. I expected Ward to outpoint Dawson, but he just completely destroyed him. Ward has Hopkins' defense and meanness and a lot more natural athleticism. Plus, he's in his prime. Kelly is a straight forward one-two puncher. He hits hard, sure, but he can't deal with slick defense and lateral movement. He will get shut out and possibly murdered. I will say this for Kelly, though. He has a lot more heart than Dawson. As talented as Dawson is, he has long mental lapses and is a quitter, as he showed against Ward. Kelly won't quit, and he will take a sustained, merciless beating at the hands of Andre.

Some good points there & Ward now appears to be getting stronger too - has more pop in his punch. He's also one smooth guy behind the mic! It may only be a matter of time before he's the expert HBO uses to call their big fights.

Sounds like Hatton carried himself well in this fight, winning on points until a body shot put him out. Glad he got a chance to fight again so he wouldnt have wondered what if for the rest of his life. Ricky announced he is retiring again and has put some of his demons to rest. Wish the best for him and hope he continues to be successful as a promoter or whatever else he decides to do.

Just read some reviews of this fight, Man I need to see the replay
It was a slugfest from beginning to end and the ref really let some stuff go
Guerrero is one tough guy, moving up in weight and taking some hard, heavy shots and still winning. Berto looked like a trainwreck after the fight. I dont know how he could even see

It wasn't as good as you might think. There was a lot of infighting, but a lot of wrestling. Berto looked pretty bad, probably because he's not juicing anymore. He showed a shocking lack of basic defensive technique and let Guerrrero land his left hook at will and at close range. Berto pretty much got his *** kicked.

The two heavyweight fights are on WeatlhTV for anyone that has it. Also, Bounce TV (which evidently isn't available in TWC in Raleigh but is in Charlotte) has a welterweight title fight between Joan Guzman and Khabib Allakhverdiev. Telemundo also has a Friday night card at 11:35 headlined by Antonio Pitalua and Pablo Munguia which is a pretty even matchup between two lower tier guys.

Tyson Fury has to be one of the greatest heavyweight names ever. Anybody know if that is his given name?

EDIT: just read up on him, seems his family has a history of fighting and he was named after Mike Tyson by his father. Irish travelers like the TV show "The Riches"

Yup. The fight with Johnson could be a pretty entertaining one. Johnson can fight if he wants to (it's just that he's typically a trash-talker who fights in a safety-first manner where he primarily jabs and counter-punches). Alex Leapai's people brought him down to Australia to try to build off a win against him and the Aussie ended up getting knocked out by Johnson in the 9th. Johnson has only lost to Vitali Klitschko and a 3 round fight to Tor Hamer in the Prizefighter tournament which is understandable given his style. This is definitely a very dangerous fight for Fury.

Broner knows exactly what he's doing. Like Floyd, he's playing the bad guy role and suckering people in to watch his fights hoping he'll get KTFO. But like Floyd, he has the skills to back it up.

Results last night from Mexico City (Telemundo Card):
Pablo Munguia (17-3) defeated former contender and 2-time title challenger Antonio Pitalua (53-7-1) by unanimous decision (119-111, 116-112, 116-113). I wouldn't mind to see Munguia fight Cosme Rivera next.

From Florida:

In an upset, Khabib Allakhverdiev (18-0) defeated Joan Guzman (33-1-1) by split technical decision to win the vacant WBA junior welterweight championship. Scores were 76-75, 76-75, 75-76. I did not see the fight but some folks claim the fight was a lot wider than the scores indicated and Allakhverdiev should have been credited with at least two knockdowns.
