Garcia's a fun fighter to watch, I read they're talking about having him fight Zab Judah back in Brooklyn once again early next year.

RE: 2012 Boxing & MMA Thread

The PPV card from Brooklyn tomorrow night has somewhat fallen apart. In the main event, Sadam Ali will now fight Ronnie Warrior Jr. (who was lined up on the undercard). As mentioned earlier, Warrior has lost quite a few in a row and really isn't much of a test for Ali. In the co-feature, Silgado will now face Joell Godfrey (some folks may remember him from Contender season 4). Godfrey is 15-8-1 and the two fought back in August of this year with Silgado easily outpointing him. Not sure why anyone would pay $29.95 for it before the opponent changes, but it's far less attractive now.

yeah, they're not friends any more - I heard 50 is working with Manny now.

Some said 50 wasn't enough of a "yes man" for Floyd & another was that Floyd didn't want to put any of his own $ into their joint venture.

RE: 2012 Boxing & MMA Thread

Couple of fight cards tonight for anyone interested:

WealthTV has Lucian Bute (30-1) against Denis Grachev (12-0-1). Grachev is a rugged, but limited guy who scored his best win last time out when he took a beating from Ismayl Sillakh before rallying late and stopping the prospect in round 8. Bute is a former world champion who is coming off his first defeat when Carl Froch stopped him in 5. The fight is for the NABF belt.
WealthTV is supposedly airing the entire 8 fight card from Montreal starting at 7pm. The co-feature is Allan Green (31-4) against Renan St. Juste (23-3-1). Green was in the super 6 and was a very solid contender for a while, but since having some medical issues he has not ever gotten back to his former form. He showed up to this fight overweight, however St. Juste is 40 and coming off a stoppage loss to Anthony Dirrell. Overall, a toss-up fight (although Green has the better skills).

Fox Sports has a card on at 10pm featuring Fernando Guererro (24-1) against JC Candelo (32-11) at middleweight. Guererro was a solid prospect before being derailed by Grady Brewer who knocked him out in 4 rounds. Candelo is long in the tooth at 38, but always shows up to win. He last fought in March and dropped a somewhat disputable decision to Raul Caserez. He had won 5 straight prior to that. The undercard features J'Leon Love (13-0) against Tyronne Selders (8-3). Selders represents a decent test for Love who has a somewhat bloated record.

I am not a hardcore MMA fan, but do have an interest in the sport.
I pose the question to slickrick, blackrazor and anyone else:

If and when Jon Jones moves to heavyweight, will he continue to dominate?

I think he can control some of the smaller guys, but dont know how he would fair against a true, big, strong, dominate fighter. Jones has the frame to bulk up considerably, but would the added weight take away from his overall ability?

Jon Jones vs Dos Santos is a fight I would love to see

That's good question, I hate the boring ground & pound aspect of MMA but when I 1st saw Bones fight, I thought that guy is different. He's much more exciting, a freak of nature - in a good way. I think that guy has a chance against anyone with his unique skill set. He might not dominate @ HW but he'd be a tough fight for anyone. I'd heard Dana wants him to fight Anderson in the next year or so.

I think he beats Silva now, dont know about Silva 3 years ago. I think the Spider is starting to slip just a little bit and if you slip a little against Bones, its over.

Good question. It's one that we will likely have an answer to in the coming 18 months. Jon has had more trouble making 205 lbs. lately. My guess is that the going will be tougher for him at heavyweight but, then again, the talent depth isn't as great either. He learns things very quickly. Combined with his physical gifts and natural instincts that makes him a threat to anyone.

Re: 2012 Boxing & MMA Thread

A few days ago on Twitter, rapper turned promoter Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson and Floyd Mayweather Jr. had a war of words. During the tweeting battle between the former best friends, Jackson took an unexpected shot at WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward (26-0, 14KOs). Besides tweeting out "**** Andre Ward" - he also said Andre Dirrell (20-1, 14KOs) was ready to take Ward's titles. Dirrell is promoted by Jackson's promotional company, SMS Promotions.

Prince is willing to match Jackson's bet of $20 million dollars. If Jackson puts the $20 million on the table, Ward vs. Dirrell could easily be made, says Prince.

"I hear there is $20 million being thrown around with betting on Gamboa. But since Andre Dirrell is with him, and he proved on there how strongly he feels about Dirrell - I just want him to know if he brings $20 million to the table - I'll fade his bet for that fight, with Andre Ward and Andre Dirrell," Prince said.

"As a matter of fact, if he's feeling that good he can bring that bet to the table and we can execute that real soon. I just want him to know that his bet, that believes in one of his fighters with...if he believes in the other one, as he quoted [he does] and he should - I'll fade that bet for him. It don't have to take no long time. It can be the next fight if he's feeling real good. It can be done tomorrow if he wants. They don't need no warmups and all that kind of stuff. It can be made ASAP - if he believes in his fighter."

Although there are a lot of obstacles to overcome before it happens, WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28KOs) could very well defend his title against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KOs) in a rematch next fall - according to multiple sources who spoke with BoxingScene.com.

They clashed on September 15 at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. The event itself was one of the most successful shows of the year. The fight broke the attendance record at the Thomas & Mack Center with 19,186 seats, eclipsing the prior record of 19,151 for the Lennox Lewis vs. Evander Holyfield rematch. The HBO pay-per-view numbers were equally impressive. The event was able to exceed expectations by generating an estimated 475,000 pay-per-view buys and $24 million in revenue.

Stories like this prove the sport isn't dead as some like to claim - boxing fans are just picky, they know the fights they like & are willing to pay to see.

Haven't paid attention to this thread that much lately and missed this. As others have said, its a good question. I have a group of friends that watch MMA, and we've often speculated on whether or not there should be two heavyweight classes. Heavy and Super Heavy.

Personal opinion is that Jones will continue to dominate guys up to about 240lb. Above that will be dependent on whether or not he maintains a quickness advantage. Some of those guys, Carwin for example, can knock out anybody if they catch them with a punch.

I think Jones HAS to go up for more competition, he's dominating 205, like a younger Anderson Silva dominated and like a healthy GSP dominates.

Jones is a freak of nature, if he can add weight without affecting his quickness, there's a possibility he could rule heavyweight, as long as somebody doesn't catch him with a lucky one.

Its fun to speculate - but I have no idea.

I think when Anderson Silva goes up to 205, he looks more beatable. I think as much as I'd love to see GSP and Anderson Silva fight - GSP wouldn't be the same fighter at a higher weight class and its not fair for Anderson to have to come all the way down.

yes he is, he sure acts like the son of a rich man @ times. I have to hand it to him though that he's willing to step in the ring & fight. He also showed his father's heart because Sergio was giving it to him for most of those 1st 11 rounds.

Russell really needs to step up against a decent opponent, or he needs to stop being featured on Showtime.

Overall this was a very successful first outing in The People's Republic of China for the UFC. The crowd at the Venitian Hotel and Casino area was really into the show and the local media reception for a first venture in the region was solid. Expect this to be a spot that they'll visit again later in 2013.

RE: 2012 Boxing & MMA Thread

Results from Hamburg, Germany:

Wladimir Klitschko (59-3) dominated Mariusz Wach (29-1) and scored a 12 round UD to keep the heavyweight championship. Scores were 120-107, 120-107, and 119-109. Wach landed one good shot in the 5th round that shook Wlad up, but other than that Klitschko gave Wach a beating although he could not put him down despite landing some big shots.

From Helsinki, Finland:

The "Nordic Nightmare" Robert Helenius (18-0) defeated Sherman "The Tank" Williams (35-12) in a 10 round heavyweight fight in a very boring performance. Scores were 99-91, 99-93, 98-93. The only eventful part of the fight was in the 6th when Williams landed a big overhand right that had Helenius wobbled badly. Unfortunately, the 40 year old journeyman couldn't capitalize on it. Helenius may be next in line for Wlad.

Good stuff! I was shocked that they didn't stop that Klitschko fight. That's the kind of matchup that causes longstanding damage to someone. Round after round of repeated powerful shots to the head. Props to Mariusz, though, on his toughness and grit. Just outmatched, but a tough guy. And nice job by Wladimir in his first fight without Emanuel. I was concerned about his mindset heading into tonight.

I am so glad to see Cung Le get some publicity, I love his style and wish he had been in the UFC much earlier in his career. He is a thrill to watch , win or lose

Can any boxer beat Klitschko when he is properly prepared. His jab is so quick and stiff that no one can really get close to him, and the straight right hand is a weapon in the later rounds. Glad to see he suffered no ill effects from the huge loss of Emanuel Stewart(a truly great man)
Klitschko finally fought someone taller than he is and still dominated the fight.
