2012 Boxing & MMA Thread

Airing right now on NBC Sports (formerly VERSUS), Ronald Cruz (16-1) of Puerto Rico is in a pretty good fight with Prenice Brewer (16-1) of Ohio.

he's a tough guy, just keeps coming & is fun to watch. I never even recall seeing him until earlier this year when he stopped Soto-Karass on NBC Sports.

Yeah, he really weathered the storm and finished Ellenburger.  Very impressive performance.  Chiesa needs to work on his stand up, but, he is tough and really good on the ground.

Not necessarily a great night of action in boxing but not terrible on SHOWTIME. At least one televised matchup tonight from another channel ended before going to the scorecards.

- 175 lbs.- Beibut Shumenov (KAZ; 13-1) def. Enrique Ornelas (MEX; 33-8) by unanimous decision

- 154 lbs.- Acelino "Popo" Freitas (BRA; 39-2) def. Michael Oliveira (BRA; 17-1) by TKO in the 9th

RE: 2012 Boxing & MMA Thread

Predictions for Saturday? I'll take:

- Bradley by very close decision.
- Jones by TKO in the 10th after he settles in.
- Rigondeaux by unanimous decision. This dude may be one of the elite pure boxing talents around, but at his age he's got to get all the title fights in that he can.
- Rojas by decision

I hope I'm wrong in picking so many decisions. Boxing only gets a few heavily watch pay-per-views a year and could really use a card where a few guys close the show. I think Arum is hoping to puch Mike Jones as a future challenger for the winner of the main event.

That's a bold pick!

I saw yesterday that Manny blamed his last performance on trouble with his wife. He claimed he had to beg her to come to the arena to watch his fight & she'd also wanted to serve him with divorce papers.

My buddy Scott Sigmon (22-3) out of Virginia fights former world champ Kelly Pavlik (38-2) in Las Vegas this Friday on ESPN's Friday Night Fights. It's a huge step up in the caliber of opponents for Sigmon.

Yeah, he actually did have a contract signed by Top Rank to fight Pavlik on April 14. Pavlik himself never signed it, so Scott was pissed when Pavlik "backed out". Scott started calling him, pissed off Pavlik, and now he has his fight. Hope it's worth it.

yeah Pavlik's been doing that a lot lately, I think he was going to fight Bute & then squawked @ the amount they were going to pay him. Too bad for him, maybe he could have exposed Bute's chin - which Froch did in England last month.

Pavlik also backed out of a Showtime fight last August.

Re: 2012 Boxing & MMA Thread

My concern for this fight is that it seems Pavlik has problems with more technical fighters. Scott is not that. He's a brawler.

Here's a video they just put out about Scott. At the 7 minute mark, it shows the gym we train in & another talented 13 year old amateur fighter.

thanks, I'll check it out.

Yes, Hopkins & Sergio really schooled him. Hopkins is a bigger man but Sergio's small for 160 & he gave Kelly a boxing lesson.

Former boxer "The Raging Bull" Pawel Wolak (29-2-1) mentioned yesterday in an interview that he is making the jump to MMA. Wolak was born in Poland but raised in New Jersey, where he was a good high school wrestler. At 30-years-old, he's one of a few former world ranked athletes from boxing in recent years that has discussed this jump due to having a legit background in grappling (Kermit Cintron and Enzo Maccaranelli being two others). At the time of Pawel's final boxing match several months ago, he was ranked in the top seven in the world in the 154 lbs. division by every major sanctioning body (#3 WBA, #4 WBC, #5 WBO, #7 IBF).

Junior middleweight contender Erislandy Lara (16-1-1, 11KOs) will take a stay-busy fight on June 30th against Freddy Hernandez (30-2, 20KOs). The fight will be televised by Showtime from the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California. Hernandez returns from last October's upset decision over former champion Luis Collazo.

In the main event, IBF 154-pound champion Cornelius Bundrage will defend his title in a rematch with ex-champion Cory Spinks.

I saw the pic of you friend Scott standing next to Kelly - Pavlik's a big man! Looking @ them, you'd never guess Kelly was the middleweight moving up to super middle.

If Hernandez is in shape, he can give Lara a real test.  Unfortunately, he's not been terribly active lately.

Finally got around to watching all of the fights from last weekend.  Anyone watch the Telefutura card?  Sadly, Rocky Juarez, who once seemed a sure pick to win a world title, lost yet again.  Juarez has been matched fairly tough throughout his career, and now at age 32, he was knocked down several times against a guy who had never fought a world class opponent.  Juarez is now 28-10-1 and has lost 6 in a row.  Probably time for him to call it a career.

As far as Shumenov goes... the guy should fight a real contender.  Ornelas is a journeyman at 168, so it's a bit of a stretch for him to be fighting for a world title.  Before him, Shumenov fought Danny Santiago, a guy who got cut from The Contender for being out of shape, and a 40 year old William Joppy who had lost two in a row and drew with a journeyman before fighting Shumenov.

Good win for Freitas, but I hope he goes back in to retirement.  He's simply not a big enough guy to fight at 154.

No, I'm sick of Juarez but you're right about him.

I heard Hopkins might be interested in fighting Shumenov & Santiago goes Down Under to fight Danny Green next month.

Rumor I heard was that tomorrow's Pacquiao fight still has lots of tickets unsold. MGM will likely grab up what isn't sold but it's really raised a lot of eyebrows in Vegas this week from what I hear.

I'll be surprised if Bradley makes it six rounds.  To paraphrase Clubber Lang, he is predictable and stupid and comes straight ahead.  That might be a problem for Manny if Bradley had any power, but he doesn't.

For die hard boxing fans, Telefutura also has a televised card this weekend Saturday at midnight.  It's pretty much a showcase double header for the Arroyo twins (McWilliams and McJoe) against a couple of journeymen fighters.

Also, anyone planning to buy the PPV this weekend should be aware of this:

http://www.fightnews.com/Boxing/save-40-on-pacquia o-bradley-ppv-117399#more-117399

Supposedly no beer purchase is required in NC so it's a free $40 back.
