Re: 60% of UNC athletes read between a 4th and 8th grade level

CNN also talked to UNC Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham.

Cunningham said he's confident in the admissions process at UNC, and that the university is making sure that only students who can do the work are admitted.

"I think our students have an exceptions experience in the classroom as well as on the fields of competition," he said.

Typo or intentional?

As a graduate student at UNC-Greensboro, Willingham researched the reading levels of 183 UNC-Chapel Hill athletes who played football or basketball from 2004 to 2012. She found that 60% read between fourth- and eighth-grade levels. Between 8% and 10% read below a third-grade level.

Usual spin of UNC trying to deny knowing anything, until CNN shows the email correspondence.

"We asked UNC to comment specifically on Mary Willingham's research and they told us they were not aware of it, and that it wasn't part of her job to do research. But then we showed them emails between Willingham and university officials that show she had approval to conduct the research and shared her findings with university officials. UNC then told CNN they plan to meet with her to discuss what she found. "

^ Good. Now CNN and all the other news outlets can E-A-S-I-L-Y learn firsthand that when confronted with anything negative, that the first thing Carolina will do is lie.

Now that CNN knows the drill - I'd think that would only give them more incentive to dig deeper.

They admitted 18 players that could barely read "See Spot Run".

ncaa =>

Anecdotally, NCAA officials admit there are probably stories that are troubling, but they also say the vast majority of student-athletes compete at a high level in the classroom.

"Are there students coming to college underprepared? Sure. They are not just student-athletes," said Kevin Lennon, vice president of academic and membership affairs at the NCAA.

But he said the NCAA sees it as the responsibility of universities to decide what level athlete should be admitted to their schools.

"Once the school admits them, the school should do everything it can to make sure the student succeeds," he said. "(Universities) don't want a national standard that says who they can recruit and admit. They want those decisions with the president, provost and athletic directors. That is the critical piece of all of this."

UNC officials have to realize that if they give degrees to someone with a 4th grade reading level, then they are destroying the value of a UNC degree for all UNC graduates. Can you imagine if a UNC jock gets a job at your company and can't read well enough to do the job? Why take a risk on another UNC graduate?

Soon, she'd meet a student-athlete who couldn't read multisyllabic words. She had to teach him to sound out Wis-con-sin, as kids do in elementary school.
And Shackleford was made fun of for confusing "amphibious" and "ambidextrous".  At least he could pronounce a multisyllabic word.

Bubba says they are bringing in kids that can do the work.  What kind of work are these guys doing that can't read above a 4th grade level?

I've emailed US News & World Report. I'm just curious how a school that has such widespread academic fraud, does not fall farther in their beloved rankings. I wanted to know if they've seen the Martin Report. Because according to him, it's not just athletics. It's an ACADEMIC PROBLEM at the University of North Carolina.

We didn't give Shackleford a NC State degree. UNC gave out degrees left and right to kids that can't read.

Seriously, when are the ADULTS(proffs and alumni) over there at the Hill going to have a revolt and take back their school.

If I were a UNC alum, I would be furious with what has happened to my school...

I tuned into CNN at 4pm and the national lead was on.
First up was the weather, then troops, third item was the reading article introduced at the beginning of the show/hour

Even more impressive that Dean was able to graduate his BB players at a 96% rate if you reasonably assume his players were at a similar reading level.

That 60% is cooked. I can assure you, with regards to the UNC football team, that # is closer to 75%. I'm sure they included the 10-15 walk ons who got in on their own to help propel that #. I want schaolrship reading level, the walk ons are of no concern, they don't go to school on taxpayer money.

did an attorney craft that response for him? - the assumption being they can do University level work.

But UNC thinks, if we have others do their work or they get grades for classes that don't meet, what athlete won't be able to handle that?
