CJ Leslie is the man

Avatar

CJ Leslie is the man

I really hate to see CJ/Calvin bashing.  He had a bad game against UNC...what is he, 20/21 years old?

I appreciate his talent and development through the years.  We are seeing more assists and some of the most athletic moves imaginable.  I think he is a really good guy, from what I can tell.

Would like to see fans support one of our own, instead of kicking him and whining...  I have really enjoyed his play over the years and wish him very well in the pros.

We get it, he has shown flashes of brilliance several times at home over three years and this exonerates him from any criticism from the media and fans. Once again, it's not bashing, and if you're interested in bashing, be a fly on the wall in NBA board rooms come June.

If he IS the MAN, he needs to start acting like it.  The great players play all the time, not just when the red light is on them.  He is not the TEAM, he is one player.  I like him, but as far as he has come he has not yet matured in how he plays the game.

Absolutely.  If someone who came out of high school a top 10 prospect with illusions of dominating the ACC for a season or two and then getting in the lottery and will struggle to be a first round draft pick?  NCSU fans suffered from years of abuse from 1992-2011.  If you think getting a prospect like Leslie and then watching him struggle to make the first round is anything to brag or be proud of, I suggest setting expectations a little higher.  I hope for his sake he works hard when he gets drafted because i want him to make some money.  His late first round money will net him two years at a mil a year.  Taxes and an agent/manager will get 50% of that.  He's going to have to work harder than he ever has to sustain a roster spot.  I hope he does but I have seen the performance at the ACC level.

CJ Leslie is the man
Yes, a big man!
With an eye like an eagle
And as tall as a mountain was he!

CJ Leslie is the man
Yes, a big man!
He was brave, he was fearless
And as tough as a mighty oak tree!

From the patch on the shoulder of ol' Les
To the heel of his Adidas shoe;
The rippin'est, roarin'est, fightin'est man
PNC Arena  ever knew!

CJ Leslie is the man

Yes, a big man! And he fought for NC State
To make all Wolfpackers cheer!

What a player! Not a hater!
What a Final Four dream come-er-true-er was he!

CJ Leslie is the man

Yes, a big man! With a whoop and a holler
he'd score on a forest of Dookies!

CJ Leslie is the man

Yes, a big man! If he frowned at a river
In July all the water would freeze!

But a peaceable, pioneer fella was Les
When he smiled all the ice would thaw!
The singin'est, laughin'est, happiest man
The Wolfpack ever saw!

CJ Leslie is the man

Yes, a big man! With a dream of a team that'd
Always forever be a tourny team!

What a player! Not a hater!
What a Final Four dream come-er-true-er was he!

Yep... he will bounce the ball while dribbling the length of the court, thinking he is a point guard in transition, and then will turn it over... again.

I can understand Calvin being a little hard headed, being that he is a 21 year old man, but what astonishes me is how Gott puts him back in the game when he keeps making the same mistakes.  He'll take Brown out in a heartbeat for Lewis, but Leslie seems to get a free pass for acting like a selfish, ball hogging turnover machine.

The only thing consistent about Leslie, is his inconsistency. He's not ready for the NBA, period.
Roy Williams is still an arrogant prick.

I wish folks would lay off him as well. Some of the attacks here have gotten somewhat personal. Yeah he had a really bad game against our arch rival on national TV and I'm sure he's unhappy about it as well. He's not going to be the first "can't miss" prospect to not reach his full potential nor will he be the last. He's 20-21 years old. Who here had it completely together at that age. People like that are pretty special. That's why they become great. And are few and far between.

Take Brown out in a heartbeat...well...NOT...Brown has had several bad games and usually has a bad stretch or two in every game. Leslie and Brown get in a mode like they are playing for the NBA so they can show they should move up the draft board. They both turn the ball over way too much. Yes - Brown makes some WOW passes but he makes as moany or more WHAT passes. He also misses a lot of open guys in a game. Leslie is a TO machine and if he is not turning it over he makes a pass that puts his teammate in a bad position because Leslie decided to go one on five...Brown turned his ankle because he decided to go one on five when he had Wood WIDE OPEN for a three but he decided to make the drive...he has done that a lot. Both need to play within the scope of the offense all the time...

Whoa whoa whoa.  This is an NCSU board.  Keep the facts to yourself, come around the campfire, and be glad we field a basketball team that even makes it off the bus for tip off.  That's all we should expect and criticizing to any further extent than that makes you not a "true fan."  If any of our players show any glimmer of talent along the way we "should be happy they chose the pack" regardless of any glaring weaknesses both on and off the court.

Maybe that's the problem. He thinks he's "the man", and is trying to do too much.

Only thing that bothers me, is that even if his shot isnt falling, he can still help in so many ways like defense, and rebounding. But sometimes it seems he just checks out. If his offensive game isnt there, he stops rebounding and hustling all together. So Calvin, even on your off days, keep playing hard...get some rebounds, the team needs you!

We're in the stretch run and there's no doubt we need CJ playing well to be successful. Let's hope that he and the rest of the guys put it together going forward. The are still huge opportunities for success available for this team.

The team did not do a very good job on Saturday everyone  should not single Calvin out.  Support the PACK!!!

Every extremely talented athlete has had a 'subpar performance' at some point in their career.

It does not mean they have suddenly lost all the talent and abilities that made them stand out from the rest.

I believe Leslie will shake it off, and his last performance will be in the rearview mirror.

There is constructive criticism and destructive bashing.  If being a grown man and bashing a 21 year old kid gets you off then so be it. 85's post is overall reasonable but there are too many that are way over the top.

Well there's the difference.  What some of the folks on here call "bashing" is not what others call "bashing."  If more "grown men" had done some "bashing" when he was younger, perhaps, just perhaps, he (nor anyone else in his position) wouldn't face the maturity issues that have cost him millions so far.  By your logic, there's just no reason for any sports outlet or forum to analyze any NCAA athlete because you're going to regurgitate the enabler's line of "Well guy X is 19-22 years old, please do not speak the facts."

Some of the people on here I swear would use the "He's only X years old" excuse up until a guy was 40.  Actually, it's more like 50.  It's true.

Calvin's probably laughing at the haters more than anything.

Grown men salivating over him when he signed with the Pack. Reaches near legend status after the Duke win and "Roll Pack". Has a bad game against UNC and he's dogged.

I think he heats up come tourney time. The UNC game was a rare occurence when Calvin didn't bring his A game against the best competition.

Keep in mind that CJ may be carrying an injury.  We don't know, but typically these things aren't spoken about publicly unless it is obvious to the viewing public.  Could be an injury, could be a rough patch.  Who knows?  But the OP is right, get off his back!

Well at least you admitted his effort against the "non best" competition is.....less than what it should be.  And if anyone should be laughing about throwing away millions in draft position, it's rival fans, not CJL or NCSU fans. I personally hope he gets 25 and 12 every game out and cracks the lottery.

Got to agree a bit with the original post. We see these cats in the NC State uniform and we often forget they are just kids. Heck I know I do sometimes. They are going to make mistakes and have bad games. The other side of it is some of the amazing stuff we get to watch when he is on.

If a player is off and having a bad game, it is up to the coaching staff to balance that out. I am not saying it is just on Gott either. He has a staff of very accomplished coaches that need to see trending during the game and make appropriate adjustments. Some players can play through it but others tend to get stuck in a funk.

Even if Leslie is having a crap game he could grab a rebound or two... or hit a free throw instead of going 0-4.

When's the last time Howell got 2 rebounds, committed 6 TOs and went 0-4 from the charity stripe?

Feast or famine with CJ. I appreciate the guy, but man does he have some real stinkers at times.
