What if we had played Vandenburg Saturday?
I was just wondering what you guys thought would have happen if we had play Vandenburg? A co worker and I were talking today (who is a Carolina fan) about if we had played Vandenburg after Leslie stunk it up and posted him 3 foot from the goal where he could just turn around and dunk if PJ guarded him. It would have forced Roy to move Macadoo over to guard him and then Howell could do more damage. Or it may have forced them to double down and get more open 3's. I'm not big on Vandenburg but it might could have helped in that sense.

That would be like sending in a cherry picker for a broken down BMW in a street race.

Only reason to play Vandenburg would be to eat fouls on the defensive end. I actually wouldn't mind seeing him play a bit more to beat on someone who tries to drive the lane.

The trouble with that strategy is PJ could run to the other end of the court and back three times before Vandenburg could turn around.

Wood would have got to shoot more.
"Historically, even looking back to when Dean Smith coached, UNC has just been a team that doesn’t foul that much,’’ said John Clougherty, the ACC’s head of officials.

When I clicked on this thread, I thought it was "What if we had played Vanderbilt Saturday?" I was trying to understand WTF the OP was thinking.
Oh well, my bad.
UNC-CHeat men’s basketball team took no-show classes until fall 2009..and then they suddenly developed other interests? That's it?? Were these magic student advisors? Do NCAA laws cease to exist on your campus?

Vandenburg is terrible on defense. We would have lost, and Gottfried would have been seriously considered for entry in an insane asylum

Re: What if we had played Vandenburg Saturday?
The question should be what if we had played Tyler more? Tyler should of gotten way more minutes than 5. A lineup of Tyler, Zo, Scott, TJ, and Rich would of been a lot better than the one with CJ.

RE: What if we had played Vandenburg Saturday?
UNC is too small, so playing Vandy would have hurt us. It makes more sense to play Vandy when we're going up against a guy like Alex Len or one of the 8 Plumlee brothers.

RE: What if we had played Vandenburg Saturday?
I don't know the answer to the "what if" part, but what message does this send to Vandy and Lewis? Pretty much saying "we trust you to play against lesser ACC teams, but in the big rivalry game, you just aren't good enough". To bench them specifically for this game is wrong. If you trust those guys to play against FSU, 10 for tyler and 7 for Vandy, why not trust them against UNC.
I understand sometimes matchups dictate these things, but show some trust in your bench. Amazing how guys can respond when they are trusted and empowered. Plus, our guys needed a rest! Forty minutes for Brown and 38 for Rich!

Forty minutes for Brown and 38 for Rich! Tyler got some decent minutes against UNC but didn't do much. I actually thought that Purvis looked good in limited minutes and probably should have gotten more PT. At this point Vandy is a liability against smaller centers... has everything to do with his physical limitations and nothing to do with his work ethic or how Gottfried likes him as a person, so I doubt his feelings are hurt when he has to watch games from the bench.

we would need to switch to a zone and plant Vandenburg under the basket to block shots.

Vandenburg would have gone for 30 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 blocks. (What the heck...we're not talking reality here).

RE: What if we had played Vandenburg Saturday?
I think Gott needs to seriously look at how many minutes he's asking Zo, Wood and Rich to play. 40, 38 and 38 a night is too many and its showing late in games. Coach has got to find a way to steal a couple of minutes each for these guys. Playing vandenburg, tyler and purvis from the 10 minute mark to the under 8 timeout would have been a HUGE lift coming down the stretch. Do the same in the first half too. I can't see us going far in either tourney with 6 players.

Re: What if we had played Vandenburg Saturday?
Dunno about Saturday but we outscored Miami in the 1st half when the front line was Howell and Vandy. He had good minutes against Wake in the 1st half but 2nd half not so much. FSU he was bad. When he's playing alongside Howell he can be effective for stretches.
TJ pulled 10 boards Saturday, he is developing and we need to get Purvis to follow suit in order to maximze this teams potential.

RE: What if we had played Vandenburg Saturday?
I hate it when Vandy is 20' from the basket chasing the guard off a ball screen. His reaction time to get back in the paint is very slow, thus he normally fouls on a late swipe at the ball for a "and one". I would prefer he just stay planted right at the rim and alter any inside shots. I guess we can't play that time of defense because we switch on screens as opposed to fighting through them?
