RE: Gottfried: "We're Disappointed"

Last week when Dumblee **** the bed against UMD with only 4pts and 2rebs, you know what Mason did???

He owned it, took the loss blamed himself and promised that he'd do his best to never let it happen again.

Has CJ done that?? Nah probably not.

That is the difference in being a leader and a team player with a coach who challenges you vs. a whiner, all about me with a coach who starts calling you by your first name in an attempt to motivate you.

Pretty ******* pathetic if you ask me.

I hate Roy about as much as I do Osama Bin Laden, and a few others but I will give him one thing. He has the balls to jerk a player out of the game and chew his *** out if he is sucking it up. Look at what changed the game. Well besides the fact we went on a 19-4 run with Calvin out and then UNC went on a 22-6 run when he came back in. He pulled the entire lineup out of the game because they were playing terrible. He let them know that playing ****** defense was not acceptable. That was the turning point of the game.

What does our coach do? He calls a timeout about 3 possesions too late and just claps his hands like nothing is wrong. He also leaves Calvin in even though we just went on a 19-4 run with him on the pine. It was painfully obvious Calvin was not going to take advantage of going against a 6'5 player so why leave him in. Certainly not for defense or rebounding ability.

Calvin has had a rough stretch of play and it culminated with his worst performance of the year. A perfect opportunity awaits him on Wednesday. The Pack is playing an inferior team with inferior players. It's a great game for Calvin to break out and get on a roll heading into March.

Also, it's now time for Rodney to step up. He needs to start playing like the preseason ACC ROY if the Pack is going to duplicate or exceeds last season's ACC and NCAA tourney success.

So he will play well against the "inferiors", sweet.

I hope something breaks him out of this funk he's in. He's killin' us. I felt like we were playing 4 on 5 a lot on Saturday. If you ain't going to run the offense and you ain't going to rebound ...have a seat. See if Warren will do it for you. We've known he's been like he is since High School and thought he would break out it, time is growing short for CJ.

I bet CJ comes off the bench Wed night

RE: Gottfried: "We're Disappointed"

I will be eagerly waiting for Wednesday night to see how Coach Gott manages this situation. Win or loose, Gott needs to show that no one player is above the team and that he is indeed in control.

Under the same circumstances, I think we can all agree that Roy or K would have jerked CJ out of that game a lot sooner and he would remain on the bench until he "earned" his minutes back. THAT is precisely what I am hoping to see.

I saw the stat on here earlier that when CJ was on the bench Saturday we outscored UNC. But when he was on the floor UNC outscored us. Calvin needs to start off Wednesday night sitting on the bench. And when coach sees fit to put him in the game he needs to play smart unselfish team ball, staying within himself, hustle on defense and quit trying to be a highlight clip. Right now, he's no where close to an NBA calibre player that anyone would want to spend money on.

Coach Gott needs to prove himself NOW as a high level coach by "handling" this malcontent player in a way that benefits the TEAM and those players who are bringing it every night. I'm beyond being concerned what or how CJ feels. He's been coddled enough already, which I think is part of the problem.

Coach also needs to solve this sequester issue or we need to run his butt out of town.

I get it, this is a forum to talk about the team, players, coaches etc., but give Gott some credit. Managing CJ is obviously not easy. We all had a lovefest about it last year because the results exceeded expectations. Calling him out in he post game presser was another attempt to motivate him.Coach probably thinks, and I agree, that we ain't making some dramatically fantastic deep run in the NCAA tourney whithout a fully engaged and performing Leslie. I think it is up to Leslie

And, in Leslie's defense, he is by far the biggest recipient of criticism on this team based on his talent. I am one of the worst offender's. I will watch a game, like Florida State, and comment that CJ needs to get it in gear, and he ends up with a double double. It is a tough puzzle and I hope CJ figures it out. The best thing for the team would be for him to come out Wednesday and emulate Richard Howell and hustle his butt off. It sure makes things interesting to watch. Frustrating, but intereresting.

Calvin hasnt really had a rough stretch of play here lately. His last 7 games numbers are higher in points and rebounds then they have been all year.

Well, finally cooled off enough since that debacle, watched the Gott post game presser, that was a pissed off man, he controlled it very well, answered the questions etc., but no doubt in my mind he is heavily chapped at Calvin, called him out twice...6 TO and Calvin has to rebound the ball. Gott is not happy with Calvin that much is crystal clear.

RE: Gottfried: "We're Disappointed"

I think Gott is great. I get frustrated that he won't let his guard down, but I think he's doing what he needs to do. I didn't expect us to be undefeated, but I did expect us to be ranked and be in the top 2 in the ACC, because the ACC is currently woeful. I know that we don't have a deep bench and the way ACC games are reffed that was going to have an impact on our record along the way.

I agree that the team is probably frustrated with CJ. I don't think it is second guessing to hope that Gott will get in CJ's ear and explain to him that this is a team game and he is not only hurting his future, he is hurting several other guys future, and letting people down.

Maybe if he tells CJ that he lost a million dollars the other night that might get it to sink in a little, because if you can't play basketball against the guys you were playing on Saturday, then why would an NBA scout think you could play against the best of the best, night in and night out for a living???????????

What did you guys think about Scott Wood's deep three from the left side off the screen with the defender knee deep in his jock? That was as pretty a stroke as you'll ever seen. Then he followed it up with another three from the top of the key.

On the flip side, he got schooled by Paige a few times by playing some sorry defense. One one play, he attempted to guard Paige standing straight up and Paige flew right pass him for an easy and-1.

A lot of our players had some poor plays and unfortunately Calvin is receiving the bulk of the criticism for Saturday's loss. For example, that throw-away by TJ was huge. Still, I thought TJ played well for a FR.

I don't care if you are the greatest "lock down" defender in the world, at some point in time you are going to look bad. The big picture for any player is staying at it. You might get facialed, but on the next play you have to shake it off and still give maximum effort. I think Scott Wood does that and that is why some of the comments about his defense are ridiculous. There are plays when he is going to look about as bad as you can, because he isn't the fastest or quickest guy on the court, but he is tenacious and savvy and he has shown that for four years. He is better on D than many here give him credit for. I am forever thankful that he has been a Wolfpacker.

RE: Gottfried: "We're Disappointed"

ArmandJ is absolutely correct. It's obvious that just patting him on the back ain't working. Here we are near the end of the season, in one of the biggest games of the regular season and Calvin does his one trick pony show and has 6 turnovers in the first half. Then he continues the rest of the game playing not a lick of defense as he was in full pout mode by that point. It's got to stop. This team aint all about Calvin. He's ruining his NBA chances by not being a team player. Sorry but I know no other way to put it. We have enough scorers on this team not to rely on Calvin to score 20 points every night. We don't need him going up for a shot with 3 guys surrounding him. We've got TJ Warren, Lorenzo Brown, Scott Wood, Richard Howell, Rodney Purvis and Tyler Lewis all capable of scoring 15-20 points every night out if need be. So when it's not there, Calvin needs to be a man and accept that. But he doesn't need to check out and stop doing the other things like playing good hard team defense and helping Richard on the boards. For the life of me I just don't understand how CJ doesn't understand that NBA scouts are watching every game, and they aren't just interested in how many points he scores. They're noticing things like how hard he plays on defense, how well he communicates on the court, his rebounding, his ability to recognize the double team and pass out of it and what kind of teammate he is. Those are all just as important as scoring. Nobody wants to draft a player that thinks it's all about him. And no NBA team wants a player that crumbles when he faces adversity. If Leslie wants to go from a late first rounder to a mid first rounder he could still do it but he's got to be a team player to make that happen.

Posted: 2/25/2013 2:13 PM

Re: Gottfried: "We're Disappointed"

Pickle - That is well said. I would imagine though, that Gott told Calvin and the team that the ball was going through him for the UNC game. In other words, he was following the game plan and the pressure was on as it was a mismatch. BUT, you are entitrely correct in that, when that did not pan out, It appeared that he quit on the game. I feel badly for him. He laid an egg woth everyone counting on him. I would like to see Gott run the offenses through someone else and tell CJ that he is giving him an opportunity to raise his stock by doing the otehr things - hustle, rebound, offensive stick-backs, defense, passing, communicate. He has a big opportunity Wednesday night.

RE: Gottfried: "We're Disappointed"

I am sure he's been told a lot of these things....the fact is he's not doing them. He's playing a "look at me I can jump" game right now. The NBA scout has 6-8 Leslie's in his file folder all the time. Hes searching for a hussler who can stop somebody over a 82 game season or a player who is coachable enough to bring his lunch pail and give it up for the team. Dunkers? he's a sack of them pouring over from the college ranks.

We should probably put this debate to rest since it won't change anything, but the "crooked refs" thing is getting old and untrue in this situation so it could hardly be "cathartic." Delusional, maybe ...

Like everyone here, I am disappointed and pissed. Really Calvin, that's the best you got? Come on man, 6 guys out there we busting their collective ***** to win that game at Chapel Hill. Where were you man. Where was your head.

Remember we went on a run and got ahead after being down by double digits without you. You were on the bench. Come on man, Man up. You get back in the game and the team is counting on you. The table was set for you. All you really had to do was guard your man and rebound, not turn the ball over and we have a solid chance to win.

Sorry to call you out but those are the facts.

Call a team meating and get the $h$t fixed between everyboday cause time is running out. You can go far if everyone is on the same page. Hope you get that simple fact.
