Dean Smith Center Experience

Posted: 2/23/2013 8:18 PM

Dean Smith Center Experience

Overall, it was alright.  I enjoyed my time in Cameron a lot better.

The building looked a bit run down and old, I'm surprised they haven't fixed it up.

The fans around me were alright.  One redneck couple behind me kept saying the most idiotic things about Gottfried and Leslie and in general being obnoxious.

After the game, the fans were generally civil saying that we had a good team and all.

Shockingly enough, very few people called me Sidney Lowe.

Traffic is bad (once again).  They really need to fix that.

How did you all think about the experience?

Waiting for a meteor to take it out when it's full of people. Preferably an intrasquad game.

I've been to the Smith Center a number of times, and always found it to be a great basketball environment. They do seriously need to begin thinking of a major renovation, as it is showing it's age. The building opened in 1986, and UNC has done very little to it since.

They better put the money towards their needed academic renovations before anything goes into that building.

Was ok. A random usher went out of his way to welcome to us to the dean dome, thought that was classy. Satbbeside a larger lady in the upper deck, but she was nice and cordial, and not obnoxious, but it was a tight seat.

Much better experience than the football game this year.

Taxpayers already picking up tab for millions of dollars per year in upkeep of that monstrosity.

they need $750,000/year +/- in taxpayer's money just to keep the doors open.

Place is a dump. Smells like urine and old folks home. Concourse is too small and overall facilities are lacking. Makes you appreciate what we have in PNC. No one said anything to us.

Viewing angles / basketball focused seating is nice.

RE: Dean Smith Center Experience

Haven't been to the Dome in 15 years and never for a basketball game before today.

No problems with the crowd. Had a really basketball ignorant woman beside me, but I can look past that.

Traffic was awful.

Honestly, the place is a dump. It smells like wet cigarettes and is hot as balls (I thought I was in Reynolds for moment). Not have a central hanging scoreboard is annoying, as well.

I thought it would be a lot louder. Now I understand why they were piping in artificial crowd noise. It got decently loud at one point during the second half for about 20 seconds.

Overall, it makes me grateful for what we have over in Raleigh (lack of leg room aside). I would hate to have to watch 20+ games a year in that garbage can.

Yeah, the air conditioning was terrible. You would think they could invest money in an air conditioner with all of the money UNC brings in.

And what's the deal with that trough urinal? Very odd.

On TV, when the crowd cheers you can tell there's more women than men in the crowd. Sounds likes a taping of Dr Oz or something.

I had the pleasure of watching the Holes lose their first ever game in the Nose Dome. We (4 State students) were 3 rows behind the Holes bench pulling for Len Bias & the Terps. Good times indeed.

They like to be able to check your package out, if you know what I mean. Sort of like the guys who enjoyed the showers after PE in school.

and that is a shame, because putting naming rights on the building would easily cover that cost, but instead they stick it to the tax payers.

My first and only time at the nose dome was the Win-CC game; DT's first one there also.

That place is beyond over rated. All that dirty laundry in the rafters does not make it a great venue, it's a dump in my opinion. Still hoping the earth opens up and swallows the thing.

Many people's opinion.

A funny thing happened recently. I met a UVa grad from the later sixties. We were talking UNC hype. I thought he was going to bust a blood vessel. To say he hates their self-promotion is an understatement.

It was great!

In '96 I went to see KISS on their reunion tour at the Nose Dome and they couldn't use their lifts because they were "too heavy" for the floor. Place sucks.

Considering it's namesake, that's not a surprise at all.

Re: Dean Smith Center Experience

The dean dome was built exclusively for basketball and is not properly conditioned for concerts.  The arena being unfit, terrible parking and terrible exiting of traffic are big reasons why there are few concerts in chapel hill.

I've been there once to see a concert and went to the stadium to see a high school football game one time when UNC had a basketball game the same night.  It makes me glad we play football and basketball off campus.  We are able to actually clear our parking lots kind of fast.
