I remember reading this a while back, but I never heard what became of it. Would love to see a 24 hour ACC network

With ND in the foal, could have enormous revenue impact to say the least.

I don't watch much of the Big 10 network, do they show many non-revenue sports, (ie, baseball, soccer, etc.) or do they show mostly replays of football and basketball.  I think you need some of both, but wouldn't just want a network that shows the least popular (after ESPN picks) games live and then shows only reruns.  I would almost rather watch Gilligan's Island on TV Land than watch a game I already know the score of. (Except maybe a big win against Duke or UNC)

I guess they cannot call it UNC-TV since that name is already being used.

That ship has sailed (cue up the "Sail With The Pilot" music from the 70s).

Only one conference network will work in the southeast.

I think that's true even if ESPN was behind it. The fact they think it's a bad idea - nail, coffin.

That being said, the folks in Greensboro are still dumb enough to try it.

I don't think an ACC network would survive on its own.  Would probably need to team up with either Big 12 or PAC 10.

I'd never watch the sec channel & would watch all things ncsu. I always thought the acc should partner with the PAC-10 to take advantage of time zones... The prime time window for advertisement would be doubled.

RE: ACC Seriously Considering Launching Its Own TV Network

Its a nonstarter. ESPN already owns every bit of ACC programming (at a bargain price) so the ACC have no control at all over starting a network. ESPN is launching a SEC network in 2014. Why would ESPN want to compete against itself with 2 overlapping conference networks? Also, the Longhorn Network has thus far been a bust, so why take more risks on an ACC network?
There is a reason no one has heard anything about an ACC network in the month since those articles were published - it's likely DOA.

Any venture of this sort would have to be done in cooperation with ESPN, at least in the near term. And they might be game. They could take their ESPN games and put them on the ACC network. Instead of selling games to Raycom they instead be sold to the ACC network.

The real issue is getting on cable/sat systems. The Longhorn Network can't even get on Austin cable.

Another option is to start an on-line channel that is subscription based. This way the cable/sat companies are bypassed altogether. This may be a few years away yet, but on line channels are the future. You can view my Roku rant on the B1G expansion thread.

RE: ACC Seriously Considering Launching Its Own TV Network

espn owns the acc programming rights for a long time. this network idea is a hail mary at best but anything that could come from it will be at the direction of espn. thus, a deal with the pac isn't feasible as the pac owns their own network which, by the way, is already on life support in its first year.

an alliance with the pac would make more sense but a network can't and won't happen due to different owners owing the rights to each conference's programming.

i don't see an acc network happening. these sports channels are about to have their bubbles pop. i could, however, see espn morph some SEC/ACC network creating a new network altogether for second and third tier inventory. in other words, espn and the deuce would still carry the games we see now, but each conference's version of raycom and espn3 broadcasts would be on this new network. espn would likely own, say, 75% and the two conferences would own the rest. this would make really good safe sense for everyone involved as it would offer more money for the schools while bumping FOX out of the game.

the days of the BTN model are gone, imo.

Does anyone else think this will be nothing but an expanded Raycom Homer Network?

At least now, we get ESPN announcers who haven't completely sold their integrity to Swofford. I can see it now: more human interest and fluff and even less foul replays and critical commentary on the game and on controversial calls.

No kidding, a horrible product. Outside of NC State, I cannot stomach ACC basketball. On the football side, Clemson (outside of State) is the only thing going on for the ACC. It is like starting a network and airing a bunch of cancelled shows.

I've been saying this since all this expansion BS started.  The ACC should go after some sort of partnership with the PAC-10.  This will insure conference stability as a partnership between the two would have major national impact on every tv market across the country.  Fox Spots sort of tried to start this with basketball a few years ago but I don't now what happend.  The opportunity for visibility across the country would do wonders for recruiting in both conferences.

The ACC would have to sell the programming to someone.....Direct, TWC, etc.   Then those carriers would pass the cost to their customers.

Would be great for baseball and volleyball. Plus, the final round of the ACC golf championship...which, if you've never experienced it, can be very exciting.

correct but it still bumps everyone down creating more inventory for such a network like I described above. ND indeed has a large fan base and will follow their Olympic sports at the very least to the degree that most ACC fans do and more than some.

Re: ACC Seriously Considering Launching Its Own TV Network

The East coast TV market is huge. ACC covers all the major markets now. Adding an additional team or 3 forces the TV negotiations back open. ESPN has the first shot to bargain but if the ACC has a Network to force a bigger payout from ESPN then this could all just be a ploy to get that bigger payout from ESPN. If the ACC Network is for real then the Notre Dame factor is huge nationwide to get on the basic cable tier on more than just the east coast. I think the ACC Network is a very viable option and would be the long term answer to Conference security. Bring it on and if it works out it could be the ultimate kick in the arse to Maryland! biggrin

If nobody cares about ND's ranked basketball team then how come I keep seeing them on ESPN? Obviously somebody cares. Of course any path forward that does not include State in the SEC is a failure, right?

RE: ACC Seriously Considering Launching Its Own TV Network

So you're saying Notre Dame non football ratings have been good for the big east and could sustain a network? A quick search shows the 5 ot ND - Louisville game had 30% fewer viewers than a Kentucky - Vandy game in the same time slot from the previous year.
ND has had the same sweetheaert non football deal in the big east since 1995. How is the big east doing?
ND football is a huge national brand. The rest, not so much.
