is MBB a relatively weird year nationwide?

College basketball has been having a relatively weird year so far.  It seems as though the bottom teams in any given conference are not lying down and taking it, which is allowing more parity in conference play.  The top 5 teams are constantly rotating in and out and losing tough games.  It's also hard to imagine Miami having a three game lead over Duke for first place this late in the season.

I can't imagine it will be like this in future years.

We'll count on your kicker to deliver us a win.

RE: Is it just me or....

@JayBilas
This week in 2003, Syracuse was ranked 15th (19-4) and Kansas 7th (20-6). Top 5 teams had 18 losses combined.

Losses among Top 5 teams this week? 15 (Indiana No. 1, has 3). This week in 2007, Top 5 had 15 losses, and Florida was No. 3, had 3.

@JayBilas
Total losses of Top 25 teams this week? 112. Total losses of Top 25 one year ago this week? 122. No great teams, but not much different.

Gotta admit, those statistics surprise the hell out of me.

This is speculation, but I think part of the reason people think basketball is down (or maybe has more parity), is because the top teams have losses that are so spread out, which has made the Top25 change drastically almost every week.  Also, top teams seem to be losing to middle-of-the-road teams more than ever this year.

I'm surprised someone hasn't made that my custom title, lol.

I actually got over it for the most part.  We've been playing well enough.  Win every game left, and I would have completely forgotten about it wink

I think it shows the overall parity which many have hoped for over the years.  There is no really great team this year.  Someone can get hot late and take all the marbles.

I know some are going to say that we did that is 1983 but, if you were around then, you had to know that we were a good team with Whit and we struggled without him.  Those diehard fans that made the trip to Albuquerque knew.

Re: Is it just me or....

Way more parity this year.  I have been thinking about it for awhile this year.

Also, I can't recall a season where home court had SO much advantage.  It's always been important, but I recall us being a dog at MD after (fairly handily) beating Duke and being on fire.

Home court is worth 7-10 across the board this year.  It's always been hard to win on the road, but we (and many others) are truly two different teams when it comes to playing at home.

No ranking is safe when a road game is in play.

Have there been more than 5 blowouts in the ACC this year - seems like every game could go either way.

Are they in? Are they out?

Arizona State is that proverbial "bubble team" whose NCAA tournament fate changes by the day.

For many, it's become great talk around the water cooler unless while you're there you happen to run into head coach Herb Sendek.

"I don't even give it a nanosecond," Sendek said. "My day is filled with preparation and focus on our team and our next opponent. I don't have time to do anything else. It's an illusion anyway, because it changes every hour. It changes with every game."

RE: Is it just me or....

For those who say that there is more parity this year--

What do you think of certain analysts (specifically Bilas, I believe) stating that college basketball is down because of so many players leaving for the draft early? In theory, it is causing the average experience of teams to drop and subsequently making it difficult for teams to have a deep understanding of their offense and build chemistry.

RE: Is it just me or....

Bilas may be right - 35 or so underclassmen entered the draft last year.  These were players who obviously were pretty good in college, whether or not they were drafted or play in the Association.

I'd love to see at least a two year commitment to college, or preferably three like baseball has, but that's not going to happen.

That seems absurd.  35?  It's not they all could have been 1st round picks.  It seems like more and more kids each year are making the bad decision to leave school early.  It definitely waters down the college game.

Glad to see I'm not the only Phins fan here. We are truly an "endangered species" these days...but we still manage to kill the Jets year in and year out! And it gets better every single time.

Yeah you kill them very year.... Jets lead series 8-6 since 2006  49-45-1 all time... Not very impressive by my Jets I will admit when you consider the amount of suck the Phins have been lately.

I guess when you are as bad as the fins winning 6 of 14 feels pretty good.
