Josh Level Tribute

Many followers of this site may know of Josh Level, especially if you follow high school basketball in the triad . Last night Josh collapsed during a time out in the 4th quarter of a game. His heart stopped beating and later we found out he would not make it. This is a very very tragic story as Josh showed great potential to become a Major D-1 college basketball player. I am posting to share this tribute to Josh with all of you. Rest In Peace Josh Level.

RE: Josh Level Tribute

Saw this come across twitter last night after our game. Very sad. Thoughts & prayers with his family. That is just awful.

Coach Dunlap also tweeted that the program found out it had lost a close friend after the game. Was this the same person he was referring to or was that somebody else???

Re: Josh Level Tribute

Terrible, terrible news.  He was WAY too young to die this way.

Does anyone know what caused this?  I have a theory because a close family member had this condition and nearly died from it, too.  The doc said when you hear about otherwise healthy kids dropping dead while playing a sport, it is USUALLY this condition.

There is some kind of "sack" or membrane around our heart.  Sometimes, that sack gets full of fluid, and it puts a tremendous strain on the heart.  Not sure what causes it, but they think my relative had a virus that caused it.  No one knew, but he was a little fatigued and short of breath one day.  He was about to go to the gym, but his wife made him go to the doctor to get checked.  That's when they discovered this.  Had he gone to the gym, he likely would have died.  All that fluid puts a strain on the heart, and a heart attack can result if overworked.  The doc drained the fluid in the hospital.  A few days later, they checked it again, and there was even MORE.  They drained 1.5 liters of fluid (almost a 2-liter bottle's worth!), and they also performed surgery to put a permanent hole in that "sack" so the fluid could drain if it returned.  He's been fine ever since.

Whenever I hear these stories, I try to pass this along.  If you're fatigued and winded when you shouldn't be, it may be your body trying to tell you something.  Listen to it and get checked.

Unknown/undiagnosed heart condition? Seems to claim a couple 15-17 yo kids each year either on the field or court. Sucks.

Josh Level was good young man and showed a lot of kindness to players of less ability than his own.  He will be missed.
