Mediapost: ESPN Set To Pass $7 Sub Fee In 2017

Mediapost: ESPN Set To Pass $7 Sub Fee In 2017

Time for the consumer to pay. This is just for ESPN, not ESPN2, U, Classic or News. They'll go up too.

www.mediapost.com/publications...t#ixzz2LODnJC38

For help with its massive NFL rights bill and likely re-upping with the NBA, ESPN can continue to count on hefty per-subscriber fees that look to cross the monthly $7 mark in 2017. Based on distribution in 100 million homes, that $7 amount would give it an annual take of about $8.4 billion in affiliate fees alone within five years.

ESPN’s current deal with Time Warner Cable calls for it to receive more than $5.40 a sub a month starting in the middle of this year; then passing the $7 mark in 2017; and closing in on the $7.50 mark the following year. The deal calls for an annual increase in the 6.5% range.

By the end of this decade, ESPN is set to collect just about $8 a sub a month.

At some point, people will just get fed up and lose interest altogether.

If TWC ups my bill any more, im out. Soon it will be cheaper just to buy season tix than it will to watch it on TV

Yet you will likely still find a way to get ESPN through some other source, because they provide programming we all enjoy watching.

And how you extrapolate $8/month into "soon" being more expensive than buying season tickets is somewhat baffling.

I wouldn't have a problem with it if they put some decent content out (besides live games). Overall, ESPN leaves a lot to be desired for.

Now 30 for 30's - that's been good stuff.

No they won't.  The conferences in the NCAA and the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament would not be expanding, if people didn't like to watch sports.  People who like sports will pay no matter what the cost is.  I myself could survive without cable as long as all channels that show sports were available over the air, but they aren't.banghead

The cost to consumers divide between the sports channels and the others is increasing significantly. Wasn't too long ago that ESPN was only getting $3/month/subscriber. They aren't the only ones, however. The RSN's are increasing their cost to consumer significantly as well (MLB costs). Enough that DirecTV and others are going to charge a surcharge to all who get two RSN's in their package.

Don't see the current model disappearing, but people are becoming more informed. It appears as if Intel will try to change the model. Will they succeed?

Cablevision joins DirecTV with a $3/month surcharge for sports programming (local RSN's). Only a matter of time till all the providers slap this on the bill. Once TWC gets around to this increase, I sure hope they provide North Carolina with a RSN that we are supposed to be getting, MASN.

www.multichannel.com/cable-ope...urcharge/141838

"We are very focused on the price our customers pay for our services, and the value we deliver," said Cablevision's vice president of video product management Bradley Feldman in a statement. "We have not raised our cable television prices in more than two years, even as we have added channels, on demand content, new TV to Go services and other benefits. Unfortunately, the rising cost of programming has resulted in this sports surcharge, which is similar to those introduced by other TV providers."

Better yet, just not care.  Heck I can count on 1 hand the number of NBA and MLB games I have watched from start to finish in the last 10 years.  I watch State, the occasional Vikings game and that is about it.  Now it is easier, given I was deployed to Afghanistan and Germany the last 2.5 years, but really I could care less about a bunch of overpaid athletes, and heck I played college sports.  Now I like being able to watch NCSU on espn3 online, but the quality isn't there for half the game, so that is annoying, although it is easier to stomach some of these "too close for comfort" games.

Heck with infomercials and reality shows, ain't much on anyways.

People won't become disinterested they'll just go elsewhere. Either the Internet or these packages offered by satellite companies, etc. or even a different network. Eventually they'll hit the ceiling with what they can charge.

Even though a good cable package isn't cheap, compared to tickets these days its not a bad deal, since you get so much great sports programming.  If you get cable for ~$70 bucks a month or so. That is still cheaper to two tickets to most college and pro sporting events. It's a lot cheaper to watch college football at home than it is to attend a good game these days.

They aren't. We are talking about other sites that stream content without the user needing a cable subscription

This! Not only are they getting really high at face value, but the after market on places like Stub Hub is waaaaaaaaay too expensive.  I bought two tickets to the 2011 Army vs Navy football game on Ebay and they cost about $10 extra dollars each, but the upperdeck tickets were $425 per ticket on stub hub.

They are not as long as you are paying for ESPN through your SAT/Cable provider. Any other method is illegal. Disney is paying higher rates for NFL/NBA/MLB, etc so we must pass those costs on to the consumer. I don't get how people expect content to be free.

ACC app? There are others as well. You pay a very nominal fee and can have access to most ACC games

How are you able to respond on the NASCAR thread as much as you do then? 14 Sprint Cup races are on ESPN (including all but 1 Chase race) and all but 4 Nationwide events are on a ESPN platform. Are you listening on the radio?

In the ESPN vs Dish case today, it was revealed that TWC and Verizon are paying $0.19/subscriber/month for WatchESPN.

As for the ACC app, that's OTA content with Raycom. After reading many on here bitching about the Raycom deal, maybe you need to give kudos to the ACC for continuing the "old fashioned" way with distributing some of their content. Should a ACC Network come along, that content may go bye-bye.

^i haven't bitched about the ACC/Raycom deal and am certainly appreciative of the content and the app. I would be disappointed if it went away.

I think many complain because the announcers are a little to be desired.... But I can mute that if I don't like it.

Yeah, wasn't signaling you out. Broad brush at others. One of the positives of continuing the partnership with Raycom and OTA distribution. I have the P12N and B10N apps on the iPad and each requires authentication through your provider (cable, satellite) or you don't get the content.

Just cut the cord.

For the cost of cable (about $1000/yr), I just go watch the game at a bar with other NC State grads.  Beer, food, and the game, with friends, for the same cost.
