RE: Technician story on NFL combine and NC State players

Four former Wolfpack football players will head to Indianapolis this weekend to take part in the NFL Combine. Offensive lineman Zach Allen, quarterback Mike Glennon, and defensive backs David Amerson and Earl Wolff were all selected to take part in the rigorous workout as they continue to prepare for the 2013 NFL Draft.

RE: Technician story on NFL combine and NC State players

I honestly think Earl Wolff will be the best pro out of all of them. He's very athletic and should measure up well against the other defensive backs. Amerson, on the other hand, I think lacks the elite speed he needs to stay at corner in the NFL. He will probably have to end up playing free safety, because he doesn't tackle well enough to play strong.

I think Glennon stands to gain the most from the combine though. He is definitely the best arm talent there and if he shows out , he could go top 10. Doesn't necessarily translate to being a good player, but every year there's a QB who just has incredible accuracy and arm strength that gets drafted highly (Blaine Gabbert is a good example).

Don't honestly know how Allen compares to the other guards. He has been a solid player for 4 years. I don't ever recall thinking that he was part of the problem with our O-Line, so that's a good sign for him. I have heard that it's a O-Line heavy draft though, so he might have a tough road to hoe.

I would see that being the case with Wolff. Amerson still has a lot of questions marks at the next level and I think Glennon is largely the guy that we knew here(unreal talent level, inconsistent results). Earl has been solid and I could easily see him ending up as a 10 year starter somewhere.

Glennon will destroy at the combine though. He always stands out in practice scenarios.

It'll be funny after they do the measurements and people start talking about Glennon being too TALL. That would be a hilarious flip of the script.

It has already happened. That was some of the talk before the senior bowl. What a joke.

I don't know, Too Tall Glennon doesn't have the same ring to it as Too Tall Jones.  Better than Too Short Wilson I suppose.

For at least the last two days, their scrolling info at the bottom of the screen lists "QB Mike Glennon, North Carolina".ohlord

That is pretty sad when the NFL network can't get a guy's school correct.disbelief

When Mattes signed, I would have bet anyone that he'd finish his career as one of the best O-lineman in Pack history.  I wonder did the multiple position changes affect his performance/develop.

bryanth ,it's ironic you say that.  he was highly rated , but never physically looked like a top notch ol.   his father taught him the technique that made him highly recruited.  his dna prevented him from being strong at the point of attack or much above average as a college offensive lineman

the stars were very wrong on this one

meh...he was a 4* OL and started his entire career here.  Id say a 4 year starter as a 4* is about right. Its not like he was a 5*, top player at his position like Crisp who has been much more of a bust.

Re: "Official" NFL Combine thread

Almost wish they would redshirt Crisp this year and develop him, let him blow up the following year and be the #1 OT taken in the 2015 draft.

The 2014 draft has 5 OT's projected in the first round, playing him next year probably isn't in his best interest. I think the former staff did a huge disservice wasting his Fr year with minimal game experience. For the OL to have been a TOB strong point, I sure was disappointed with our OL performance/development.

TOB screwed Crisp. Should have been red shirted his freshman year. He played very few minutes, and even with those few minutes, it was easy to see he was not ready for college ball. Why TOB burned his redshirt for just a few minutes I will never know. He did it a few other times as well.

The coaching staff screwed all of our OL, most likely.

TOB's strength training staff and their emphasis of 'flexibility' over muscle mass is what did in Mattes. IMHO. We as an OL were very weak at the point of attack despite being very large guys.

Pays to be flexible when your coach is screwing your chances at the NFL.

Wide receiver Tavon Austin from West Virginia turned quite a few head with a 4.25 time in the 40. No fluke either , he also ran a 4.31

Officially 4.27 -- .03 away from record.

Goodwin, from Texas and a 2012 Olympic long jumper, ran the official 4.27. Baltimore Dunbar's Austin ran an official 4.34. Wonder if Kelly would like Austin in Thomas' role for Oregon with the Eagles. He did play RB in high school.

And people wonder why Geno Smith put up huge numbers.  The guy had two NFL WR's to throw screen passes too.

Well here's the thing... he didn't just throw screen. Someone put up a chart with Smith, Glennon, Barkely, and one other QB, which portrayed the percentage of short, intermediate, and deep passes each one threw.

IIRC Smith led the intermediate category.

Here's some Amerson quotes from talking to the press at the combine:

"I'm disappointed with how I approached this season. I didn't have the right mentality."

"I sat on routes and was guessing. It resulted in the touchdowns I gave up."
