Cal Coach Mike Montgomery pushes player
I'm one that never like it when a coach makes physical contact with a player, especially out of anger. However, I have no problem with what Montgomery did. IMO this was one of those type of pushes which was aimed at firing up his player. I didn't see any malicious intent with what he did. Maybe that is something Gott should do to Calvin. http://www.latimes.com/sports/...0,6833102.story

Coach Gottfried needs to throw a chair on the court or something. Rip off his jacket. Something that indicates that he's not going to take bad effort/reffing anymore.

Non-story, IMO. Didn't they go on a huge run after this too?

Re: Cal Coach Mike Montgomery pushes player
If a coach has to physically push a player to get him "fired up" he isn't doing his job. There is no reason for a coach to ever push a player like that.

I usually agree with this 99.9 percent of the time. This is that .1 percent where I could be a bit lenient. But to be safe, a coach should never put their hands on a player. Props to the kid for not retaliating.

Re: Cal Coach Mike Montgomery pushes player
My God, I wonder how some of these kids even get out of their own way sometimes. He's gonna get his panties in a wad over that? That little push?
And as far as the coach is concerned, I'd like to see, just once, something like this happen and the person just stick to their guns and not give the scripted, bull **** apology that nobody believes anyway.
But I guess there are enough hand wringing mother hen types out there just looking for something like this to happen so they can have a cause to have candle light vigils and work to get somebody fired with their PC speeches, that he's either got to lie with an apology or get fired.
Like the OP stated, there was nothing malicious here.

Anyone who played high school football in North Carolina during the 1980s finds this entire thread absolutely comical.

From what I saw, several other Cal players "removed" Mr. Crabbe from the coaches vacintity with some physical force of their own. I dont know what would have happened otherwise. Crabbe was very upset. Whatever happened seemed to work, Crabbe was just named PAC 12 player of the week. At least Montgomery didnt resort to "Choking" him, like one famous former coach has done.

Do they even do that drill anymore? Bull in the ring has recently been banned from youth football. I'm 25 and we did the drill when I played. It's complete pussification of a contact sport.

Re: Cal Coach Mike Montgomery pushes player
Wilbon on PTI acted like Montgomery crucified the kid. You can clearly see he was trying to fire up his best player. I even think I catch the words "Do you want to play?!?!" The kid was mentally not into the game and looking at the results there after it woke him up. People can criticize him all they want but we live in a world of sports where if you don't win right now in the present you can lose your job very quickly. At least point out that the team and the player himself turned things around after the coach laid into him the way he did.

Mike Bray knocked one of his players out of the way to get a technical tonight. Changed the entire game around for Notre Dame. Where's the uproar?

Team won and that player went off. If they can patch it up in practice, it was brilliant.

RE: Cal Coach Mike Montgomery pushes player
Should the coach have done it? Probably not.
Was the fact that he did it a big deal? No.
Was the kid's reaction reasonable? Absolutely not.

Basketball wasn't all finesse, either. Nearly 30 years on, I still remember being bumped by tackling dummies and pummeled by blocking shields during layup drills. Didn't get the layup off? Everybody gets "ON THE LINE!" for sprints/suicides.
