I know the perception is that the BIG 10 is strong but they have 2 teams with 7 or more losses in the top 20.

Re: Feb 17 MBB polls (AP NR #31)

Notre Dame ranked?
Oregon ranked?
VCU ranked?

As mentioned previously, NCSU dropped 9 spots last week, going 1-1, while no other team dropped more than 6...and our loss was by 1 to the #3 team.  This week, no drops of more than 5 spots with a 1-1 record.

Minnesota went 1-1 this week, and only dropped one spot.  They are 3-7 in their last 10.  They are STILL ranked ahead of us.

The Big Ten and now for some reason the Big East (and mid-majors) are being held to a different standard. They are forgiven much easier for their losses.

If we win the next 11-15 games, we're gonna be ranked pretty high

As others have said before, trying to rationalize the college basketball polls is like trying to figure out why they are called chicken fingers when chickens don't have fingers.

Miami is living out the season we could have had....they win games.

That being said, we're miles ahead of where we've been, with a chance to still have an excellent year.

Sort of...but not really.

Miami played their Big 10 challenge game at home (Mich St), where we had to go on the road (Michigan).
Miami hasn't played UVA on the road (and won't)
Miami hasn't played Duke on the road
Miami hasn't played Maryland on the road (and won't)

I really hate the unbalanced schedules in our league.

That having been said, what Miami is doing right now is extremely impressive....and they are deserving of the praise and ranking.

I honestly would bet half of my savings that Miami doesn't make the sweet 16. They have the record right now...but there is something about them that screams to me, "poser!". I also think we will beat them if we play them again.

We received absolutely no votes in the Coaches poll, while Ohio State and Wisky sit firmly in the top 25 with 7 and 8 losses. The obsession with the Big 10 and their brand of basketball is comical.

Miami played us at home, and we don't have to play them.  I mean, they really are a lot like us.  They just win their close games and we're batting closer to .500

With that said.  How in the **** does Minnesota not drop more?  They got blown out yesterday and lost 3 of their last 4.  Ohio State is in the same boat.  They've lost to every single ranked team they've played except Michigan the first time.  The B1G is without a doubt the best conference out there, but they're gonna flame out of the NCAAT so hard.  They only have two title contenders in Indiana and Michigan, everyone else would be lucky to make it past the sweet 16, unless Izzo pulls some of that BS magic out of his *** again.

I don't get it either. State loses a couple games on last second tip-ins and is b-slapped in the rankings. B10 teams are b-slapped by 20+ in games and rankings are barely affected. Standards aren't applied universally. ACC may be having a down year, but it isn't as awful as the narrative wants you to believe. Those mid-majors and middle tier B10/BE teams that refuse to drop in rankings are playing some pretty ugly b-ball too.

At least all 7 of their losses are to ranked teams.  We have losses to Wake, Maryland and UVA.  UVA and Maryland are decent but Wake is horrible.  People have really lost faith in our ability to consistently play well.

Really? You really just made that comment? I believe Mich. State is ranked #8 in the latest polls. I also believe they just hammered that Michigan team you so highly praise. In your mind when does Izzo's "magic" fade and his actual coaching ability take over when describing his past accomplishments? It must be the 8th Elite 8 because the man has 7 Elite 8 and 6 Final Four appearances since the 98-99 season. Keep spewing though, friend.

Not arguing whether we should be ranked, but Ohio State has shown nothing to warrant even being ranked, much less 18th.

They have 4 wins against top 115 in RPI. #8 Michigan, #26Wisconsin, #80 Iowa, and #89 Washington.

They are inept offensively.

I think you missed the entire context of my post when describing Izzo...but here, I'll break it down...after...

I do sincerely (LOL) apologize to you for insulting a team whom in MY OPINION (apparently we can't have those anymore) doesn't have a good chance of winning it all BASED on talent.  noidea

I think we're all laughing at how the polls are a popularity contest.  So excuse me if I don't think Michigan State is the 8th best team in the country.  As for them destroying Michigan, yup, they did.  We also beat Duke.  It's easier to beat a rival than it is to beat a team you have a few days to prepare for (NCAAT situations) and have likely watched very little, if any, tape on.

As for the magic, I wasn't insulting him as a coach.  In fact, I was doing just the OPPOSITE.  I think Izzo is a damn fine coach.  I think he's probably behind only Self, K and a few others.  I just don't think this Michigan State team is all that talented.  Hence him "pulling magic out of his ***."  Let's see how he does in these next 2 weeks before crowning their *****, shall we?  Oh, and if accomplishments made a good coach, and FFs were the qualifier, Ben Howland would be better than Krzoooski, Brad Stevens & Bill Self in the last decade...I'll let ya think about that for a second...

I see what you're trying to say.

Needless to say every player on our team was healthy. We just couldn't execute free throws in that game.

I will say that we should be ranked if we go 2-0 this week.

When we lose to Wake, need a last second shot to beat Clemson and then OT to beat Va. Tech, we have no reason to be ranked right now. That, coupled with the Miami and Maryland tip losses are killing us in the polls. We would have only 3 conference losses and 5 losses overall if not for two tipins, but all the voters see are losses.

The fact we are not ranked right now is no reason to panic.  If we do not start playing much better very soon, we will have reason to panic.
We are ranked 43rd in the country at kenpom.com, which normally is a pretty darn good rankings site.  Of course I think we are a little better than that but the numbers are what they are.

Sure, we're inconsistent and our defense mostly stinks. But, out of our 7 losses, we lost to #2, #6, #7 & #14. We lost a close game to a decent UVA team after our starting point guard went down. We lost to a decent UMD team on a last second tip in. Our only bad loss was against Wake. We beat #6. We are still 5th in the nation in FG%. We are 9th in scoring. And, we are top 25 in RPI. I'm not saying we should be ranked in top 15 or 20, but I'm not understanding why we are not getting ANY votes in the coaches poll. We need to take care of business the rest of the season with no more WTF losses. We'll be in good shape if we can make it with no more than 1 loss.

Take one at a time, but if we win both games this week, we will be back in the top 25. I'd bet money on it.  Need to completely focus on Fla. St. but a win at Carolina would be big in so many ways. Go Pack!!!!!

The Massey Ratings website tracks a lot of different college hoops rankings models and compiles an overall rank, has some in-depth analysis and comparisons.

State's ranked #27 (mean) and #31 (median) among the models Massey selects.   Interesting site.

I think we start generating some heat and light in the polls again if we beat FSU and then UNC.  Nope, neither are "high value targets" in the hierarchy of college hoops this year, but a win in Chapel Hill would be noticed and get us back in the minds of whoever submits the coaches' votes.
