Ex-Duke Guard Phil Henderson Dies

According to reports on twitter...

Sad news from Duke basketball family. Former Blue Devils G Phil Henderson has died. Apparently he was in Phillipines but no other details.

In the 1989 regional final against Georgetown(should have been us but Rick Hartzell made the worst call in the history of basketball) Henderson had a monster dunk over Alonzo Mourning late in the game.

Sorry to hear about his death.  I believe I saw him on the Duke campus about a year ago.

Thoughts go out to Duke and his family.  I remember growing up in the late '80s and early '90s.  Remember names like his, Alaa Abdelnaby, and moving into the National Championship years very well.

That was classic.  Only better person it could have been on in that era was Ewing.

Prayers to Mr. Henderson's family.

Wow, same here.  I was a big fan of Henderson, Dawkins, Banks, Spanarkel, etc. back then (before Duke became annoying).  RIP Phil.

Sad to hear. Remember him, Abdelnaby and Brickey together just before Duke finally got over the hump. 44 is WAY too young.

That is tough news, he was a good Bball player. Just another reminder that life really does go by too fast and how fleeting it can be for some.

You stay classy, individual Pack fans who find humor in this.

[edited to add bolded clarification, sorry for painting with a broad brush even as I criticized others for doing so.]

Also deceased, thanks for asking.

I see you're going all-in with the myth that the grandma thing was actually 'chanted'.  Some people will believe anything.  Anyway, I think you just lost any moral high ground by making fun of a young man's death.  In writing.  Which I assume was not heat-of-the-moment.

ETA:  Bad enough that one guy writes it, but then another guy has a laughing fit over it and writes about that.  And then you come try to deflect/defend it with your a-hole response.

Unbelievable.  I've enjoyed my time on the board, feel free to ban me for calling a-holes a-holes.

Not imputing to all of State fans the incredibly insensitive and tasteless comments of a few (I leave that kind of generalizing to you guys with this 'grandma' b.s.).

Still hope State has a great season and wins it all, if Duke can't.

I'm not the only one who believes in the "myth", as some of our own players heard it. So, realize what a hypocrite you are to bring up "classy", to our fanbase. I'm not disagreeing with you on the post, but to come on here and use the words "stay classy" is beyond ludicrous.

Whoa..way to young. I, like many others on here, didn't mind the Dukies so bad back then. Henderson was a fine player and seemed like a class act.

Fair point, I chose my initial words poorly, apologies for that.  Edited the original to be more clear on my meaning.

Sorry to hear that, but don't blame you for feeling that way toward me, given the words I wrote in my initial, emotion-driven response to the joking about Henderson's death.  My bad, and I've edited my initial broad comment to be more narrowly focused, as it should have been in the first place - I really only meant to call out the Pack fans making a joke out of Henderson's death, not to call out all Pack fans.  Apologies for my mistake.

I remember the Georgetown Game.  That dunk and laettner owning alonzo on the blocked shot were awesome.

Sad news for Duke, ACC, and college basketball fans everywhere.
