VT Coach James Johnson - coach box violation
In attending 60+ years of Wolfpack basketball I have never seen a coach disregard the coach's box line as James Johnson did today. And I know the line has not been there for 60+ years. But Coach Johnson spent more time in front of the scorers table and on the playing court than inside the line. They might as well eliminate the line if they are not going to enfore it! Go Pack!

Looks like VT had a number of line violations today that weren't called.

RE: VT Coach James Johnson - coach box violation
I don't know this guy personally, but I was not impressed with some of the things his team were doing out there. Looking at what his team was doing, it is a reflection on him and his staff. They seemed to be doing "shady" stuff all night. And these weren't things the players were doing on their own, but things that had to be instructed by the coach or even practiced. They grabbed and shoved throughout the game as guys went across the lane. Then, they pulled that stunt where they gathered at the free throw line as Scott was about to shoot. Also, they did the illegal free throw put-back. All these things had to have been orchestrated by the staff. (There is no way players would think, on their own to stand right in front of the free throw line as a guy is about to shoot.) Now I understand guys trying to "gain an advantage", but what about sportsmanship and trying to beat someone man to man. Maybe I am biased, but I don't feel as though Gott pulls any stuff like this. He seems like a guy that plays "straight up" Was anyone else annoyed by this? Ok, rant over, haha....

All that stuff is done by every school in the country, including State. Gott said as much in his last PC. The game has gotten more and more physical in the last 10-15 years.

Re: VT Coach James Johnson - coach box violation
He had at least one thug on the team, and he should have been thrown out of game for going over to Scott Wood while shooting free threes and mouthing to him.
Johnson apparently does not know what the line on the sideline is for, and neither did that set of officials. He lived outside of box and often on the court.

Raines was the player that stood in front of Tyler Lewis and talked to him before two free throws. All Mike Eades did was tell him to stop. That's taunting and very unsportsmanlike. Should've been a Tech.

Does this mean Tyler Lewis is also a thug for giving it right back to Raines while burying said free throws?

Re: VT Coach James Johnson - coach box violation
Calvin tried to tell the refs, but he got T'd up. I think the refs were afraid he'd hit the VaTech coach while flinging his arms 10 ft from the sidelines.
I've never seen such a poor and biased officiating job as today. I've seen numerous games at UNC that were very very bad; however, they were rarely blatantly wrong. The Howell foul when he was under the basket, the end of game scenario, and the goal tend of Tyler Lewis potential 3 point play were absolutely wrong and so easy to spot, the announces saw them.
Unbelievable.......
Maybe we should bring Hess back.......NOT

As for the coach, he reminded me of a less successful Sidney Lowe. He's just not a good coach, and it shows in his players and the record. That's all it is, really.

At one of the gatherings at the free throw line, a VT tech player actually elbowed Wood in the ribs before he shot and missed one free throw.

I was fine with #4 until he intentionally elbowed Wood at the line. You can try to defend your team but they were thugs. I'm a huge Tech fan and my girlfriend graduated there and she was even embarrassed and pissed that he wasn't thrown out of the game. #4 is a thug. hokiewolf wrote:

RE: VT Coach James Johnson - coach box violation
I think Coach Lowe spent as much time on the court than he did in the coaches box...
Whatever was said to Lewis made him smirk as he proceeded to knock down his FT's...d
Maryland and Duke were jawing back at forth at the FT line as well...

Re: VT Coach James Johnson - coach box violation
I think James Johnson will be fine as their coach at VA tech. They have been in majority of their games but just seem to fall short.
I have a buddy of mine that is a booster at VA Tech and he mentioned that their old coach Seth Greenberg was a tyrant similar to Matt Doherty. He had mentioned that James Johnson had a lot of work to do to change the culture of the program.
Also, the Refs are horrible in the ACC however they are just bad across the board. They aren't slighting us because we're the Pack. Heck we shot 44 FTs compared to their 7. I just think they are consistently bad and don't know how to call games.

In real life, people don't always play by the rules and gain an advantage. Our boys faught hard and won in spite of it. That tells me all I need to know about this team.

Re: VT Coach James Johnson - coach box violation
It's not even the number of fouls or FTs that gets me. We've been on the positive and negative side of that stat this year. What gets me is the timing of some of the bad calls and just how blatantly the refs miss them. Truth is a ref can change the flow and outcome of a game by their timing of the all-mighty whistle. Drives me nuts.

Would punk be better? The guy should have been hit with a technical or at least a warning with the way he was getting in the faces of Lewis and Wood. ArmandJ wrote:

Coach's box violation is one of those things that never called, like palming.
That being said, look for Gottfried to get busted for it in ACC tournament.
