They has to be the worst call in the history of basketball...not sure how anybody could see that play and call a foul on Howell. Ref who made that call should be embarrassed as hell.

Worst officiated game ive seen this year. Leslie was hammered on the play before the technical by two different hokies, he also got shoved on the break in the back down to the floor a few minutes later. ESPN guy said lane violation was blatant. Tyler Lewis obvious goal tending not called. Howell with the ridic phantom over the back call. Eric Green taking 6 steps to the basket in front of everybody. Not to mention the craziest one to me was reversing a Zo Brown three to a two with absolutely no evidence to do so. I just wonder how these guys are graded by CLougherty and Swofford? We are the only team in the history of the ACC that gets zero benefit of a homecourt. We dont get 50/50 calls. Hell we dont get 80/20 calls. Its sad that I cant wait to get to the NCAA tournament so I can watch a game thats officiated well. "It just keeps coming and coming," Mitchel said. "I wonder who is minding the store."

Seriously, people claim that we only complain about refs when we lose, but this was one of the most frustrating games to watch this season even though we won. It seems like the refs are completely guessing every time. It really takes away from the enjoyment of watching ACC basketball. I'm getting really tired of it and wondering if it's ever going to get better.

That is truly bizarre. The only thing that makes ANY sense was that he blew the whistle, got it mixed up in his head then was too bull-headed or proud to change his call.

Different team/game once we got to the NCAAs. Looking forward to it again! |

That's what makes this my favorite call of all time. It takes real conviction to make a call when there is - literally - nothing to call (on Howell at least) and then stick to your guns. On the play in question, I think he called the foul on Howell for hitting the guys arms after he had the ball. (Bad call, yes.) Should have been over-the-back, or whatever the official call for that is, but they didn't call it. I think they felt Howell was late to go for the ball, and in the process got the guy on the arms after he'd secured it. Lame, but there you have it.

What's funny is that every player on the court thought it was an over the back on VT and started walking downcourt.
Another call I'd like to see again is the non-double dribble on VT - refering to the one where the ref made the "bobble" gesture. I thought the VT player was dribbling, started to dribble off the pass, had two hands on the ball, and dropped it - there wasn't an NC State player w/in 8 ft of the guy. Wasn't it an obvious double dribble or am I missing something here?

Those top notch ESPN 2 announcers cracked me up on that goal tending call. Apparently their job is to agree with the almighty ACC refs no matter what they do. Funny stuff.
Question: If a ball hits the backboard, NO MATTER WHAT, if you smack that it is goal tending, no?

I love blaming the refs just as much as anyone, but we had 43 foul shots to their 7. 43 to SEVEN. They only shot 5 more threes than we did. Horrible calls - yes, but it's not like we didn't get our fair share.

It was horrible. A lot of these missed calls or no calls or wrong calls were in the open court, so it should have been easier for the refs to make the right calls.
The ones that stand out to me as "on the take" level calls are the Green 4 step walk, The crazy over the back no call turned foul on Howell, the violation to take the game into overtime, the no goaltending call on Lewis' layup. Leslie getting mugged on several different plays w/o a hint of a whistle. Howell being called for a foul on a Green layup when he obviously backed off and didn't touch him.
BUT, it's tough playing on the road against a superior team. We shouldn't expect to get those calls. Oh wait... |

43-7 against the last place team in our house and barely win in OT!! Guts this is on Gitt and his NBA wanta be Leslie.Not the refs Howell call bad but there is something wrong with this team. Been hearing rumors for a month in locker room .

After reviewing the better replay, I'm definitely right on this. Still think it should have been over the back, but Howell hit the guy's hand and knocked the ball out as he was about to shoot. Let me reiterate -- it should have been a foul on the VT guy.
