I wonder how much vomit the N&O staff will have to clean off the printing press for having to print this in tomorrow's paper. This does make me wonder why he's going to leave town. Seems to me he had a pretty sweet deal lined up for him to hang around.
---------------------------------------------
His "Reputation for his commitment to student success, academic excellence, and professional integrity" includes recent statements that he "did not get into the grading practices of his Professors" (when asked if he thought someone should get an "A" on a plagiarized paper"), over 200 bogus classes with bogus grades, and an orchestrated whitewash of an athletic scandal that dwarfs anything we have ever seen.
Yep...he's the perfect candidate. Uh-huh.

Surprised the SEC schools did not have a bidding war for Holden when you consider his vast experience with cheating and cover-ups.

How hard could it be? Hmm, well let's start a list for Mr. Thorp:
Julius Peppers (oops he didn't graduate, not so easy I guess) Vince Carter Tyler Handsboro Since this is not an athletic issue as we have been told over and over, what is even more disturbing are non athletes who took these courses, ended up with a fraudlent A+ and were admitted over others to graduate school/medical school/dental school.

RE: Accrediting agency wants clear action from UNC
If there is going to be any criminal action taken for forgery and/or fraud that so far has been directed at only two people (Dr Nyang'oro and Asst Crowder), then Holden Thorp is going to be thoroughly examined and called to provide testimony as to what he knew and when he knew it.
Imagine if Thorp is called to testify under oath, he will present himself as 'far removed' from the present investigation as he is concentrating on his next post as the Provost at Washington Univ in ST Louis.
You can bet that Thorp is one of the few who definitely knew what Dr Nyang'oro and Crowder were doing, and how they both managed to leave UNC without officially answering any questions.

Anyone following Jay Bilas on Twitter regarding the NCAA and Miami? Anyone think those comments could and should equally apply to UNC and the academic fraud scandal? Jay Bilas @ JayBilas No reasonable person could possibly believe Roe Lach operated without approval from superiors at NCAA. This has a "Watergate" feel.
Jay Bilas @ JayBilas NCAA says "select" personnel in the wrong. So much for accountability. Start the bus, so Emmert can "select" those he'll throw under it!

NCAA fires VP of enforcement Roe Lach’s departure is only the latest in a spate of firings in the association’s enforcement staff. Investigator Abigail Grantstein was fired in December for improper conduct during the association’s investigation into UCLA basketball star Shabazz Muhammad. Investigator Ameen Najjar was also fired in the summer of 2012 while working on the Miami case. The enforcement staff also lost longtime investigator Rich Johanningmeier, who retired in 2012, and saw the abrupt resignation of Bill Benjamin, who left his post as the NCAA’s director of enforcement less than eight months after taking the position.
Will anyone be left at the NCAA to return to Chapel Hill?

Techcutter, that story is not accurate. UNC had no problem with VT in 2003 and could have blocked VT's defacto re-entry into the ACC by working with Duke to allow UVa off the hook. UNC wanted VT in the league to fill their football stadium. UNC did not want Syracuse. Besides, UNC stood by you in 1953 when MD, Clemson, and South Carolina had blackballed you over the Presidents support of the bowl ban. They made the motion to let you in and it died 4-4 with UVa in addtion to MD, Clemson and SC voting against you.

Re: Accrediting agency wants clear action from UNC
As the unc* mess unfolds...I think back to dickie b.'s early quote which is the most accurate statement made about this whole deal... "The facts keep changing." Well, we all know the facts aren't really changing...just being revealed. With the ncaa* seemingly falling apart at the seams, I am losing hope that the cheats* will be appropriately punished by anyone. unc* is successfully getting rid of all the "players" before they can be questioned. The only investigating body with subpoena power is SBI and we don't even know exactly what they may be investigating (if anything) beyond dr. j and the no work for pay issue. I know SACS investigation has not yet begun...but they will not punish for past athletic sins. The turtle pace of all this is maddening.

New article in the News and Observer In moving on, Holden Thorp will leave athletic headaches behind"For two years, Thorp was consumed with several scandals that began with improper benefits and tutoring for football players. Then UNC-CH made national news when an academic fraud scandal was uncovered in the African and Afro-American Studies department, where investigations found no-show classes, poorly supervised independent study courses and unauthorized grade changes. And the university’s chief fundraiser resigned following revelations that he and his girlfriend, the mother of a former UNC-CH basketball player, charged the university for personal travel." It's a trifecta:
* improper benefits to athletes (players with agents and getting things in Miami and parking tickets being mysteriously paid)
* academic scandal - a whole department not monitored for decades AFAM scheme to keep athletes eligible
* top fundraiser embezzling from the school (Tammy Hansbrough)
