Originally committed to UTEP out of high school. Already visited Creighton. We'll see what our staff thinks of him I suppose.

Any update on Sid Ditte's visit and a time frame he may make a decision.  I want to see more big bodies signed.  No reason to get stuck with so few scholarship players.

He did visit Clemson on Sunday, so if he compared the atmospheres of each game this weekend, he should not have any trouble picking us.

So Sid was actually at the game saturday?  I know he was reported to be coming, but I never saw any pictures of him or mentions.

Gott needs to see him play before he gets an official offer

Was going to see him against WOG last week but the game was cancelled due to weather

I'm sure several sites say that. Not exactly the full story though.

I also understand State HAS offered Djitte. Tangman, Is there a difference between an offer, and an official offer? I know we haven't offered Coger, but are still considering him, and what is the full story on Djitte?

Depends on the prospect. For some guys, like a Julius Randle, you'll take a commitment at any time. For others, you "offer" to start the recruiting relationship but that doesn't necessarily mean you'll take a commitment at any time.

Long story short, from what I've heard, Coach Gott needs to Sidy in person before we would take a commitment from him. I'd be willing to bet that things will heat up with him after Gott sees him play live.

I guess he won't be offering him then. jk

Is it safe to assume CMG has already seen Coger play live?

Skill has never been a problem for Tashawn Mabry. Academics and other off court issues have been the huge problem.

With most likely four leaving - three verbals thus far - five schollies to return (assuming Vandy returns). With some assumption, we would have 8 scholarship players for next year with 5 available. WE need impact players at several positions with a 7-8 man rotation - going to be tough next season.

I'd take a pass as well, has nothing to do with current players.  Mabry should probably stay as far away from Rocky Mount and his old cronies as he possibly can.  It would be to easy for him to fall back in and waste the opportunities he has now and ahead.

Preferably an experienced guard, which I why I wouldn't be averse to a JUCO player.
RaleighDodger wrote: And this is why I still harp on the fact we NEED ANOTHER WING/GUARD IN THIS CLASS. We lose Scott and Zo. We replace them with Turner and Barber. We still have Tyler and Rodney. Same number of guys we had tonight, and when Zo went down, they outscored us 21 to 14 the rest of the first half and we couldn't be the dominant team we needed to be in the second.

I'm fine with all the bigs we're after, and I hope like hell we get Randle and Djitte. But say it with me: We. Need. Another. Guard.

Agreed.  We need to get 10 scholarship players on the team at least.  If we have to offer some JUCO guys that can play, I'm all for it.

WE are expecting a lot of the freshman coming....a whole lot. we need reinforcements badly, or we will a frustrating team next year big time. Our coaches are going to be busy, as will the players. Barber, Washington, Anya are only the beginning. WE need a minimum of three more and Turner. This playing 7 players is a losing game in the long run.

Re: Basketball Recruiting Thread 9.0

I actually disagree. Keeping a tight rotation is a good thing IMO. It let's players get into a rhythm and helps with chemistry. While I definitely think we need more scholarship players, I don't want the rotation getting any larger than 8 guys. That's plenty. UNC is a good example of overplaying their rotation -- they use 11 guys, and no one ever seems to be in sync.

Kentucky won a championship last year playing basically six guys. Kansas won a championship in 2008 playing seven guys. Heck, when State won back in 1983, they really only played seven guys IIRC

Cadence wrote: Heck, when State won back in 1983, they really only played seven guys IIRC
True, and I think a lot of teams probably stick to a seven or eight-man rotation for most of their minutes.  But when Whittenburg got hurt during the 1983 season, we had a pretty capable back-up in Ernie Myers.  Without Myers, I don't know that we'd have made the tournament.

We really need to be 9 or 10 deep even if only 7 or 8 guys are getting most of the minutes.  Eventually, those 2 or 3 guys that only see spot minutes will play, but they have to be willing to fill that role initially.  I guess that's the trick:  Getting quality guys who are willing to start out as role players.

I disagree - as long as all 7 guys can play significant minutes, and you have a guy or 2 who could step into the 7 man rotation in an emergency. we only have 6 guys right now. duke has won forever playing basically 7 guys.

I seriously doubt that the staff will fill up the roster next year just for the sake of filling up the roster. that will hurt us in the long run.  we should be fine at the guards next year, and both Warren and Ralston can play wing. we just need another guy or 2 at the inside positions and let them battle it out to make the 7 man rotation.

I agree that you need 7 main players, with an 8th getting a few minutes/half.  More than 8 in the rotation is too many.  To make it through a long season, I think you're 5 starters need to average no more than around 150 minutes/game.  (Ours are probably at around 175 and it's starting to show.)  6th man gets around 25/game.  7th man around 15/game.  8th man around 6-8/game.  Leaves a few minutes wiggle room.

The scholarship numbers get tricky year after next.  Only 1 senior next year (Vandy) and we already have the Martin twins committed.  A chart like toddl does for football would really show it.  If we were to load up this year, the numbers game could bite us next year.  I would probably not get above 10 scholarships for next season.  UNLESS, we could find one or two graduate players who would only be here for one season.  I'd be very happy to get Randle and Jitte and call it a day.  That would be as good a 5 man class as State's ever had.  Again, if we could find a good perimeter grad student for one year, I'd take him also.

RE: Basketball Recruiting Thread 9.0

I agree with you bppack, We don't need another guard for next year, although we have a few here that insist that we do. At point, Barber will start, (I believe), with a more mature Tyler Lewis backing up. At shooting, or wing guard, Purvis starting, and Turner as a back up. That's 4 deep at the guard positions. Hard to replace Zo, but we will have more depth. The front court concerns me a lot more.  TJ Warren is a lock at small forward, backup?? We may have to go with 3 guards at times, with either Purvis or Turner. Power forward? There lies the million dollar question. Do we land Randle? nor do we have an apparent back up. Maybe Washington. Center? Combination of Anya, Washington, Vandy.  To me the apparent needs, are for another capable big man, or two if we don't get Randle. With that said, I believe we could very good next year, but so much younger, and the expectations won't be as high for obvious reasons. Randle is so key, but I'm not betting on it.

Rules changed this season, Juniors can go on official visits.

A start date for official visits beginning January 1 of the junior year, with schools able to pay travel expenses for the prospect and a parent/guardian.
