Richard Howell= Wes Unseld, with the ability to score.

That's good company!

Re: Richard Howell Rebound Watch-#6 all time

Wes Unseld played 3 years at Louisville. 82 games, averaged 20.6 ppg, and 18.9 rebounds!! 2 time All-American. 6' 7" 245 lbs. at that time. Got a bit heavier in the pros, but he certainly had the ability to score. Best chest pass I have ever seen. Comparing Howell to Unseld, is quite a lofty compliment, but yeah, same type of player.

it would be GREAT company if it was even remotely close to accurate.  wes unseld averaged 20 ppg and 19 rpg during his career at louisville.  unseld also went on to become an nba hall of famer.

howell is awesome, but he is nowhere near the calibre of player wes unseld wasbanghead

I love Richard to death and he does work his tail off, but he will have to go to be at the same level Unseld was.

I read in (I think) Sports Illustrated that Unseld could throw the ball off of one backboard, go up and get the rebound, turn while in the air and hit the other backboard with a pass.  He was a great rebounder and may have had the best outlet pass ever.

According to Ken Pom, Howell is 24th Nationally in offensive rebounding rate and 68th in defensive rebounding rate. Additionally, according to Ken Pom Howell is better in every category but drawing fouls when compared to CJL.

Does anybody have any idea on Howell's pace adjusted rebounds versus the other players on this list? I would argue that Burleson and Shavlik saw many more possessions per game than Howell.

RE: Richard Howell Rebound Watch-#6 all time

Hey guys I did a very quick analysis of Howell and his rebounds. Due to my inability to mine an enormous of data quickly I did a rough analysis.

YearTotal MinsMins/game% of GameTotal RebsReb/ minOff RebDef RebOff Reb/ Opportunity
2009-201040813.60.341370.33642950.110491424
2010-201154718.20.461960.358841120.181173096
2011-201299927.00.683420.3421352070.172860847
2012-201374431.00.782600.349941660.176550688

Couple things jump out at me really quickly.

1) Howell has pretty much rebounded at the same rate since a freshman.
2) Howell's ability to collect offensive rebounds is pretty exceptional. He is collecting an offensive rebound on 17.5% of his opportunities.

The column Off Reb/ Opportunity means "offensive rebounds per opportunity to collect an offensive rebound." The formula is as follows.

                                Off Rebounds                               _
(NC State FGA - NC State FGM) * (% of game Howell played)

I made an assumption that shots are equally distributed throughout the game. I also did exclude games he missed due to injury. So some of these numbers could actually be higher.

If anybody has data on opponent FGA-FGM I can finish the rest of the chart. At least in rough form.

State is guaranteed 8 games remaining (7 regular season, 1 in ACCT). At 935 rebounds, he'd need to average 16.4 rebounds a game to tie Burleson for 2nd.

8 games: 16.4 RPG
9 games: 14.5 RPG
10 games: 13.1 RPG
11 games: 11.9 RPG
12 games: 10.9 RPG

Assuming Howell plays in the remaining games and 7 regular season games and at least 1 ACCT game and at least 1 NCAAT/NIT game

Howell's 10.8 rebounds per game x 9 games = 97.2

6 regular-season games left plus at least 2 post-season games.  1,000 rebounds is definitely within reach.  Must average 9/game to get there in the regular season.  2nd place is iffier.  Must average 15/game to get there in the minimum available remaining games.  Or, of course, make a deep run in both tournaments...

1,000 rebounds sure sounds nice and would be quite a feat. We have an absolute minimum of seven games left, with six regular, and one guaranteed In the ACCT. Quite sure it will be more games than that. With 49 rebounds needed to reach a thousand, Howell would only have to average 7 a game, for those minimum of seven games. I say, 1,000 rebounds is basically a lock, catching some of the other guys, might be a stretch. If he does move up to 2nd or 3rd, theres going to be some happy Pack campers around here.

Another great effort by Richard on the boards.  Had he been in better shape and not prone to reach in fouls, he very well could have become the # 2 rebounder in school history.  Shoot he still might make it with a few more games like yesterday.

What a great accomplishment by the young man and remember those rebounds all come one at a time.  He has personified what hard work, dedication, and desire can help one's abilities.  Hopefully it ends in a first team All ACC selection for Big Richard.

115 left to tie for 2nd. 6 reg season and at least 2 tourney game (1acc and 1 NCAA or NIT), means a 14.375 average.

Sure would help to get some more wins in the tourneys.

I'm thinking at least 2 ACC and 2 NCAA. which makes 10 games. 11.5 per game is not out of the question
