RE: Carolina Panthers want $200M to upgrade stadium

Yes, I am serious. I'd love for someone to explain it to me.

For clarification, the poster said losing the Panthers would hurt the economy of NC. Just want to know how the Panthers effect anyone outside of Charlotte. Personally, I don't think they've ever branded themselves as "North Carolina's" team. More of Charlottes team. IMO

Shouldn't SC get a portion of the bill?  They benefit as much as NC. That's the reason they were called the Carolina, not North Carolina Panthers.  If any state money goes to it, there should be a stipulation that Richardson has to pay that money back if the team relocates.  Personally, I wouldn't miss them a bit if they move.  Tired of not seeing my Redskins but once in a blue moon b/c Fox has the contract for both.

Re: BOA stadium: Richardson: CLT & NC should covet NFL

If people in the Charlotte metro area want to pay for this thing, then by all means proceed. However there is a snowballs chance the NC General assembly will pay a dime for the stadium upgrade. What sense does it make for someone living in Elizabeth City to pay for a stadium in Charlotte? Also, NC is currently 2.5 billion in the hole for unemployment benefits paid out during the recession. The last thing we need to do is spend money on a stadium upgrade.

It's time these cities start calling the NFL's bluff. These stadium upgrades across the country have gotten out of control mostly for the benefit of a few billionaires. And yes I know the local economies benefit from the teams, but prove to me the people in Charlotte wouldn't spend that money elsewhere if there were no team.

Okay, but a lot of people who pay for this funding will not benefit from it.  In general, a select few will.

Let the voters of Charlotte decide what they want: upgraded stadium, or $250 for each resident?

The National Football League is a $9 billion-a-year industry, but it's a nonprofit in the eyes of the Internal Revenue Service. The league pays no corporate income taxes. The Atlantic Coast Conference gets the same treatment as a charity, even though it pulled in $293 million in revenue last year, according to Forbes.

You guys are joking if you think this is worth the money. This is a classic case of wasted government money. What proportion of the state population do you think would like to see the money spent this way versus on one of the many other needs we have? 15%? 20%?

If any of you are against government waste and increased spending/taxation, you should be against this as well.

If the business can't succeed on its own, let it die or move to some state full of suckers.

You clearly have no idea how economic development works. Large employers come to cities/states because of what those places are willing to offer the company (land, buildings, tax incentives, ect). It is not about a business being able to succeed on its own. A business is going to pick the place that gives them the potential to make the most money. If a place is not willing to do that, then a company will take their jobs elsewhere.

The Panthers, since they own the stadium right now would be the ones on the hook trying to find a new buyer for the stadium.

The teams that leave are the ones who only have a lease for the stadiums.

Shinn sexually assaulted that woman and wanted to get out of town. God what an embarrassment he turned out to be, especially after he was treated like a savior when he was awarded the team and the first few years after. Then after losing Mourning and he brought that Freak partner in that acted like an extortionist, then it was all down hill. And Stern not at least working out a deal to help the team keep its historic name did it for me. I hated the NBA after the Jordan Pro Wrestling years and the Hornets fiasco cinched it.

I actually just heard on Charlotte radio it might be closer to 200 million.  Wonder if they put a dome on it to try and host a Super Bowl.

**Edit to add a retractable roof is in the talks based on what I am listening to right now.  Possibly Charlotte trying to get into the National Championship rotation and possibly having a "Opening Weekend" game like Atlanta and Dallas.
A retractable roof would cost something like $400 to $500 million and I haven't seen an old stadium add one yet. The cities that have decided to build retractable roof stadiums have built new stadiums. The Falcons are looking to scrap the Georgia Dome and build a retractable roof stadium at the same site for $1 billion. The Georgia Dome is only 4 years older than BoA Stadium and had a $300 million renovation is 2006 and as most know things haven't gotten cheaper since then.

That's just crazy.  If I were an Atlanta taxpayer, I'd say to the Falcons, "I hope you like it in LA."

PSL is acutally personal seat license, not permanent.  However, I have no idea if they are only good for 20 years or not.

As for NC State LTR's, the L definitely stands for Lifetime.  They do not expire, but I don't believe they can be passed on to your children.
