This is going to happen. It's the cost of having an NFL team. The stadium was built with PSL money, so the city/state has actually gotten off pretty cheap so far.

This may be the DUMBEST thing I've ever read. Not real sure what you find so dumb about the post. The tax is on prepared food and beverage. You have the choice of going to a bar or restaurant. If you don't want to pay the tax then eat at home.
Pretty reasonable and sensable to me. A Charlotte-loving Hole fan who has never seen a tax he didn't like. Why is this not surprising in the least? WTF are you talking about? This is an tax by choice only. Nobody is forcing you to pay the tax like they are in places like Cincinnati, Minn. and Indy. If you want to go out to eat and booze it up then expect to pay a whopping $2 for every $100 you spend. If you don't want to pay the tax then stay at home, have your old lady cook you some fatback and get you another Budweiser out of the fridge. Pretty damn simple to me.

Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson and Charlotte officials want the state to put $62.5 million toward the cost of more than $250 million improvements to the team's 17-year-old stadium. Asked Wednesday why the team couldn't pay its own way, Richardson said, in short, because they don't have to. NFL teams, he said, "are so coveted, they don't have to pay. There are only 32." www.wral.com/panthers-owner-ci...oval-/12100989/

Why should the state of NC contribute any money towards this? Will Charlotte lose the team if we don't? **Edit to add a retractable roof is in the talks based on what I am listening to right now. Possibly Charlotte trying to get into the National Championship rotation and possibly having a "Opening Weekend" game like Atlanta and Dallas. A retractable roof would cost something like $400 to $500 million and I haven't seen an old stadium add one yet. The cities that have decided to build retractable roof stadiums have built new stadiums. The Falcons are looking to scrap the Georgia Dome and build a retractable roof stadium at the same site for $1 billion. The Georgia Dome is only 4 years older than BoA Stadium and had a $300 million renovation is 2006 and as most know things haven't gotten cheaper since then.

Greedy offspring of female dogs....let them move.... the taxpayers (beyond those locally who will pay with a tax on prepared food and beverages) shouldn't have to foot the bill for this...
I am perfectly fine with not having an NFL team in Charlotte if that is what it comes too.

why should the taxpayers foot the bill for upgrades to a private stadium?
Especially for a sport like the NFL which basically prints its own money

I don't understand. Richardson has more money than God, makes money faster than a counterfeiter, and still holds the city/state up for $200M? That's $48M less than original construction price.

I'm honestly surprised that Richardson is asking for the whole thing to be publicly funded. Considering he's one of the few owners who built his own stadium out of pocket, and it's not like he's got a lot of time left to use his millions...
But hell, I'm for it! Don't live in Charlotte and as long as the state of NC doesn't see a tax hike for that 62.5 million, go right ahead! :P

Re: Carolina Panthers want $200M to upgrade stadium
Yes, I think it's a reasonable ask by the Richardson.
I'm willing to be there is a quantifiable benefit for Charlotte and the state of North Carolina having the Panthers, from property taxes values, and surrounding businesses, who also pay taxes on those transactions---bars, restaurants, parking, vendors, higher rents for those places, more exposure, bowl games, ACC title game, etc.
Considering he built the thing without taxpayer money, ....I think it's reasonable, and it seems like the city council and mayor agree and granted it. I think McCroy will as well.

It's pretty simple. If they won a little more, and consistently, then you might get a more favorable response. Second, where the heck is S.C. in all this? When created it was touted as the "Carolina" Panthers, a team shared by both states. Not the Charlotte Panthers or the North Carolina Panthers. Ask them, see if they care.

It's more than 8 games....it's preseason, and bowl games, ACC title game, concerts, DNC was supposed to be there. We've played there.
I would think a good amount. First off the Panthers pay taxes, property taxes on the stadium, ...all the vendors apart of it, from the direct employees in catering, the grounds crew, people in the stores, the people working concessions, the charity work benefit gained from it, ....to the indirect ones, ...the people who own land around there taxes higher, the bars and restaurant employes making more, paying more taxes, doing more business.
So far since inception, I don't think the Panthers asked for anything.i think the city might have gave them the land to build it, but not sure.
I live in Charlotte and a taxpayer, ...for all the b.d. government waste that no one mentions, this one is allocated. The Panthers have been great for the Charlotte region, and state. Charlotte is the biggest city and most urban in the state, they aren't out in left field asking for it.

200M for a mediocre product for 17 years JR goes through periods of stinginess about paying for premium athletes but when his ratings are rock bottom he foots out top dollar for a few years, we'll be mediocre at best for a few years and the cycle repeats. JR is a businessman and this has and always be only about money for him.
