BOA stadium rehab: CLT to provide $87 million
The Charlotte City Council endorsed a proposal to give the Carolina Panthers $125 million for stadium renovations with a 7-2 vote during a closed session meeting late Monday night, according to people familiar with the debate.
Under the plan, a 1 percent tax on prepared food and beverages would be increased to 2 percent. That money would help fund the renovation plan for Bank of America Stadium, the team’s home since 1996.
Voting in favor of the plan — which still needs approval from the General Assembly and Republican Gov. Pat McCrory
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police didn’t allow members of the media near the room in which council members and the team were meeting. Council members often meet in closed session, but having police protect the meeting room is highly unusual.
football record prediction (2010) 3-9, 1-7 (2011) 5-7, 2-6 (2012) 7-5, 4-4 MBB prediction: (2010-11) 21-9, 10-6 (2011-12) 19-12, 7-9 (2012-13) 24-7, 12-6

RE: closed session: Charlotte tax increase for BOA stadium rehab
The tax payers didn't have to contribute very much to the initial building of the stadium unlike places like Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Minneapolis so, the deal they received then was pretty sweet compared to most other NFL cities.
If the taxpayers don't want to contribute they have the choice not to go to bars and restaurants unlike the folks in Cincinnati where they're charged a stadium tax by the city which helped in construction and maintenence of Great American BallPark and Paul Brown Stadium.

The taxpayers were told that Bobcats Arena would be built regardless of how the vote went.
How is that working out?

There was an article by Pro Football Talk a couple months ago that suggested that if Jerry did not get his upgrades, he might look to move the team to LA. I have no idea how valid that is, but I am sure he used it as leverage so he did not have to come out of his pocket to pay for the upgrades.

These upgrades help more than the Panthers. A lot of non profits make their whole yeaes budget doing concessions. City of Charlotte and local businesses get money for the traffic downtown during games, concerts, ACC title game and other private events held at the stadium. They do hold other things there besides sporting events. Also, the Panthers donate time and money to many charities, high schools, high school teams, little leagues, and other areas of need in the community. Many former players have retired to the area, they have become paid coaches, volunteer coaches, camp coaches, etc.

125 million in rehab, it needs that much? Really.

Wonder if they put a dome on it to try and host a Super Bowl. **Edit to add a retractable roof is in the talks based on what I am listening to right now. Possibly Charlotte trying to get into the National Championship rotation and possibly having a "Opening Weekend" game like Atlanta and Dallas.

Sorry upset Skins fans but you're beloved Redskins will never be shown regularly again Sundays on Fox. I'm a Panthers fan, but a diehard NFL'er, so pony up just like I did and buy Sunday Ticket. Not only will you get to watch the Skins play every week but you'll get to see RW and PR if you want. Just never have understood the Panthers hate. If you wanna bash an organization for crapping on fans and a community start one about the Miami Marlins. That's a town that should be upset, believe it or not lots more love the Panthers in Charlotte than the ones who hate em. If the Bobcats win people will show also, Shinn leaving left sour grapes to most in Charlotte.

If you have been a PSL owner since the start of the Panthers' organization, you have paid approximately $233,000 in 18 years for 4 playoff appearances. . . that's the numbers they are reporting on Wfnz. The Panthers are a horribly run franchise too. One of the worst in the NFL.

Redskins Suck. They suck so bad that even when they get a great QB in RG3, they manage to eff it up. Go Panthers. Im all for the upgrades. Wish they'd tax both NC and SC since they're the Carolina Panthers

4 playoff appearances since 1992 for the Skins and I'm willing to bet season to tickets/PSL's are more expensive so what's your point? Daniel Snyder is a great owner? Deion, Archuleta, Trotter, Jeff George, Bruce Smith, Haynesworth, Brandon Lloyd....want me to continue, those were all Snyder signings

I have been an orginal PSL owner and loyal supporter of the Panthers. Two year ago, I gave up because of the poor quality of the product on the field.
Enough is enough. Jerry can afford it, let him pay for it.
That said, Charlotte will support him due to the financial impact of the games on city.

If the numbers, financially, are between 125-200 million dollars that should get a roof on the stadium (I would think). If one of the most boring towns I have ever been to, Indianapolis, can host a Super Bowl and Final Fours. . . Charlotte can host those too.

RE: closed session: Charlotte tax increase for BOA stadium rehab
My father bought the PSL's on day one and has his name on one of the Panther's in the front of the stadium. He tried to sell said PSL's to my sister and I about 8 years ago. Why would we buy them when we can get cheap, great tickets whenever we want? He lost his butt on those PSLs. That said, I still pull for the Panthers above all other NFL franchises.
The tax in question will be a food/hotel tax increase. They were smart enough to not offer this up to a public vote. Just another reason I'm leaving Mecklenburg and heading for Waxhaw/Union County where I'll have 2-3 years before they start jacking up taxes.

Great, then let them pay for it. This doesn't help the majority of people, so I don't see why the majority of people have to pay for it. 1985 NCSU Grad wrote: These upgrades help more than the Panthers. Every team in the league is using LA as leverage. In fact, LA is almost more valuable to the NFL without a franchise than it is with one.

Just reading that article, I saw that the hotel tax in that county is 15.25%. That's ridiculous. It says that I was raised two points in he last decade to pay for he NASCAR hall of fame.

Consider this a preview of the upcoming rehab of the PNC Center, Raleigh. In another 5-10 years, it will definitely come up in front of our local governing bodies.

Love all the Wake County haters that pop up on every Panthers thread. Panthers suck, hate them, blah, blah, blah.
Charlotte benefits tremendously from the Panthers being in town. PSL owners have the choice to sell their PSL's for whatever the market will pay if they don't like the product, which is more than us LTR holders had when we sucked. It sucks that taxes have to go up but at least it is a tax on discretionary spending.

I guess if the silly city council offers, and they probably suggested it even when the topic first came up, he'd be foolish not to use some one else's money. But the only way this helps the average citizen of Charlotte is if it generates more events there, which then help restaurants, hotels, gas stations, etc. But, most of those directly benefitted are within couple miles of the stadium, not out in Ballantyne or Lake Norman or east/west Charlotte who will similarly pay for it.
