RE: ACC Regular Season Tie Breaker Situations

If we tie with UNC and UNC alone, we win the tiebreaker. Assuming they lose to Duke again, we'll be 1-1 while they are 0-2.

State has: BC, @GT, Wake, @FSU

UNC has: @Clemson, FSU, @Maryland, Duke

UVA has: GT (tomorrow), Duke, @BC, @FSU, Maryland

At least we have the easiest remaining schedule.

SABOTAGE!!!

Re: ACC MBB conference standings and the week ahead

Mentally tough? You have got to be kidding me. We have got to be the weakest minded, dumbest team in the league. If I see another lazy pass either to the wing or to the top of the key, I think I'll shoot my TV. We beat ourselves regularly. I will always continue to pull for this team and most if them (I'm looking at you,CJ) play very hard, but damn it's tough watching all this talent go to waste due to simple bad decisions.

RE: ACC Regular Season Tie Breaker Situations

UNC probably goes 2-2 maybe 1-3

UVA goes 3-2 though I could see them going 4-1. That's a favorable schedule IMO.

I bet it's between us and UNC for 4th.

Duke, Maryland and at FSU will be no cakewalk for the Hoos.  If the Pack is to finish 4th or better, I think the more likely scenario is passing UVA.
I see UNC losing to Duke but that is it.  Like it or not they are much improved.

RE: ACC Regular Season Tie Breaker Situations

Since we are throwing out hypotheticals...

If States goes 4-0 in these final 4 games... it seems almost a lock to get a top 4 seed... likely 3rd

UNC could easily lose its last 2... @ UM will not be easy... and they are trying to elevate themselves away from that bubble line...

UVA has been pretty Pack-esque on the road... so back to back road games would likely yeild a loss, coupled with a Duke loss...

Pack finishes third... of course the biggest IF will be can the Pack play good basketball for 4 straight games... I am still holding out hope.

Maybe I'm still down from yesterday, but I just don't feel a top 4 finish from this team now.  I hope I'm wrong.

Other than having to play an extra game, finishing 5th wouldn`t be all that bad. Va Tech in first round and then the Cheats on Friday, win that and a possible rematch with Miami. 3 very winnable games, if all of our guys show up to play.

Va Tech still has a chance to get out of 12th... They seem to be playing a lot better. Not sure I'd be thrilled playing them on Thursday.

you see things more optimistically than I.  I see that as:

VT - a team we needed OT to beat at Home
UNC - a team we split 1-1
Miami - the #1 team in the league

Yes an Th. match with VT wouldn't be the end of the world, but if we win, it means we're probably already tired going into the #4 seed game.  Win that, and you're exhausted for Miami.

RE: ACC MBB conference standings and the week ahead

I would rather play Miami on Saturday than Duke. Duke is playing better at the moment. Plus, by Sunday afternoon, all those 3-pointers Duke's going to be heaving all weekend have a better chance to start coming up short.

Of course, the way we're playing all this is irrelevant.

We'll win our last two home games. And if we can just beat GT I think our boys will lay it all on the line at FSU with an ACC bye at stake. I'd much rather get the bye than have to play an extra game with our thin lineup. We'd stand virtually zero chance of winning it all if we have to play on Thursday IMO. Hell we get tired at the end of games now. Can you imagine how we'd play on day 4!

We can finish in 4th several different ways.  But it all starts with us winning out.

UNC loses to Duke and we take the tiebreaker over them.
UVA always has tiebreaker over us.
Maryland won't do us in favors - I imagine they lose both UVa and UNC games.

We can even curse other teams from afar.  - rswilli2

If Duke takes care of UNC, we should be in a great position for 4th place, we would own the tie break with UNC if that happened. Our schedule is also easier than UNC's. We have @ G Tech/@FSU , and they have @Clemson/@Maryland, plus they have Duke at home. We need Duke to beat them and split our road games and we will get 4th.

Not at all.  Unc has @ Clem/MD and home vs. Duke.  They liklihood of them losing two I would think is 30-40%.  We can lose one of our road games and still have a decent shot at 4th through a tiebreak with UNC because we would have beaten Duke (Miami is a wash).

Lets see what www.rpiforecast.com/live-rpi.html predicts for the final standings.

Looking at each team's page and their predicted ACC record it comes up like this :

1) Miami 16-2
2) Duke 14-4
3) UVA 12-6
4) Tie
NCSU 11-7
CHeats 11-7 - tie breaker : head to head - 1-1 , with Miami 0-2 for CHeats, 0-1 us, Duke - CHeats 0-2, US 1-1 - We get 4th
6) MD 9-9
7) FSU 8-10
8) Clemson 9-11
9) Gtech 7-11
10) Wake 6-12
11) BC 5-13
12) Vtech 4-14

UNC - UM 0-2, Duke 0-2, UVA 1-1 = 1-4

I don't think our records against UVA would factor in at all.

You just start at the top of the standings and go down until you find a difference.

You get a difference with Duke, Us vs Duke: 1-1, unc-ch vs Duke: 0-2. So, we hold the tiebreaker in that scenario without having to go down to UVA.
