biggrin Good early recruiting line-up. Interesting early season comments from those who don't seem to be able to take Good News in stride. Pitching this year is going to be excellent with top talent and great depth. Can't wait til February cool Okay, I'll wait. Ooops! How did I get on the non-subscription board?

Re: RELEASE: Pack Earns Highest Baseball Preseason Ranking Ever

I've made no secret that I am not an Avent fan either ............ I know there are or were alot of us at one time lined up with pitch forks and torches.

Either Yow has finally lit a fire under him or 10+ years of program building is paying off (rolls eyes) but the last year or so has been better. Not enough to sway me from wanting a change - I'm so soured that only a CWS appearance will do that. That really was the line I drew last year.

Is this the last year of his contract - if so, its CWS or bust as far as I am concerned.

I've only been to a handful of games since Avents arrival ...... this after years of supporting Friends of NC State Baseball and hardly ever missing a game. He lost me early and I've never really have considered giving him support other than in small patches like last year.

I could write a small book on why but I will not - he's just not the guy that I think should be at the helm of our program.

September 21, 2012
The NC State Board of Trustees has approved new contracts for men's basketball coach Mark Gottfried and baseball coach Elliott Avent.

Avent, who guided NC State to an NCAA Super Regional in 2012, also received an increase in guaranteed compensation from $193,412 to $219,125 and an extensively enhanced bonus structure. His contract runs through June of 2015, after having been automatically extended by one year following the team's NCAA berth last spring.

"The future looks bright for our team under the leadership of Coach Avent and the anticipation for our baseball season is very high," said Yow. "We are glad to provide improved compensation opportunities for Elliott."

I know I am overly critical of him ........... he's just one of those guys (for me) thats hard to support.

Editted to add ------------ I am very disappointed in the contract extension thru 2015.

I apologize. I shouldn't have worded it that way. I just don't understand why everybody and their brother wanted to fire O'Brien for mediocracy but all of the sudden they are ok with 15 years of it. But as most have said hopefully last year was the start of an upswing.

thank you
I think Rodon and Turner night get Avent 2 more years, but no NCAAT and he will be gone, just like any other NC State coach.

I assume you never went to game at the Old Doak? Pre-2004?
High schools would have been embarrassed to play at that stadium.

Doak is upgraded and it is time to have more than 1 CWS appearance in NC State's baseball history.

Yes I did. But not near as many as I have in new Doak for obvious reasons. Honeslty my main beef in the past has been all of the JUCO recruiting and the lack of recruiting in NC but that seems to have changed recently. That and the new lineup seemingly every game

I believe it was mentioned last year that much of the recruiting had been turned over to Coach Hart.  He's done a great job.  I do not look forward to the day when a school hires him away as their head coach, and I believe that day is approaching quickly.

I agree on the lineup thing.  Seems like Avent loves to have at least one position every year to use a platoon.  I think we'll see it again this year, maybe at 1B with Senay and Clyde.  That is something that I don't particularly like for any team, but I'll get over it.

Avent made a change a couple of years back and Chris Hart is the assistant coach in charge of recruiting, not Coach Holliday. I will just say I did not like Coach Holliday's recruiting philosophy and was glad the change was made.

I hope in-state recruiting will pick up, with the scholarship and roster limits by NCAA, it seems to be in recruit's and school's interest since very few college baseball players get 100% scholarships.

Avent is going to go left-right at some positions where he feels there is not a clear advantage. Sometimes I scratched my head on decisions. I hope Mangum and Shepherd can catch mid-week game at least to reduce wear and tear on Austin this season.

edit: one of my concerns is the inability of the staff to find a mid-week starter. some teams use it for freshman or sophomore to gain experience and confidence and that starter becomes a week-end starter next season.

I agree wolfer.  Seems like they are focused on having everyone available on the weekends.  I'd rather determine the top 5 starters and go with 4 and 5 midweek.  Those games are important too, and I'm not a fan of the Johnny Wholestaff starter once a week.  I think midweek is a good role for guys like Healey, Frye, newcomer that projects as weekend starter in a year or two.  I think our staff is deep enough to use real starters and give them real starter's innings in midweek and them not be available on weekends.

I have also not been a great supporter of Avent in the past. I believe he has bought himself some time with the year last year and the talent that was brought in. The thing that drives me crazy with him is his teams are always below average fundamentally. making the routine plays in the field or base running. Weather it is getting down a bunt or bunting with your number 4 hitter.

But here's to a fresh open view going into the season.

I feel base running has improved when Coach Hart moved from 1b coach to 3b coach and Coach Ward moved to 1b coach.

What a lively baseball debate. I have not been a seriously devoted fan of the baseball team, but have always pulled for the kids to be successful. I followed the team last season through this site and really enjoyed the effort and hard play by our boys. Also loved the in game updates by the guys who took the time to do so. I have always been a fan of the game and totally look forward to a big season by the Pack.

Look out Omaha!

I didn't go to his speaking engagement that lead to his "probation".  I did go to hear him speak last year, and thought he was at best off the wall and at worst borderline offensive.  He's a  baseball coach, for Pete's sake.  I don't give a rats *** what he thinks about the deplorable state of the country and so forth.  Not the time or the place.  Absolutely no comparison between Avent and UNC's Fox (who also spoke last year) in terms of demeanor and professionalism. When I've heard him at WPC caravan, he doesn't do that (stray off topic), but then I guess I wouldn't either if my boss was sitting out in the audience.

Take a look at the last 4 seasons and all the mental mistakes his teams make continually.  Take a look at last season when in key situations fundamentals broke down. FV you will defend the guy to your grave and that is fine. You got to at least admit though his teams over the last 3 seasons have been no where near the top 1/3 errors and making the fundamental play both in the field and on the base paths.  Hopefully last year was a turning point and like i said above i have a fres open view going into this season.

Finished Tied for 7th with most Errors in the league at 74 last season.

I am looking forward to the season also. Things look to be in place for a deep run in the postseason the next couple of seasons (Omaha???). Recruiting has been very good the last few seasons. Along with what someone earlier said, the next couple of seasons will, to use the expression, 'make or break' Avent.
As with any coach when you're winning, you look like a genius (putting Senay in against Vandy). When you lose, you're the worst to ever coach.

I think those will be the weekend pitchers too, but I"ll go with Rodon, Jernigan, Ogburn, in that order.  One thing is sure, we have the pitching depth to make some real noise.

Midweek starts could be DJ Thomas, Orwig, Frye, Sasser (hope he's fully healed), or even the true frosh Brad Stone.
