RELEASE: Pack Earns Highest Baseball Preseason Ranking Ever

Pack Earns Highest Ever Ranking in Collegiate Baseball Preseason Poll

NC State landed at No. 11 in Collegiate Baseball's preseason top 40 poll, released Thursday by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. The standing marks the highest preseason ranking in Wolfpack baseball history.

The last time State appeared in Collegiate Baseball's preseason poll was a No. 29 ranking ahead of the 2004 season. The Pack's previous high came in 1993 with a No. 16 ranking by both Baseball America and USA Today.

The Wolfpack returns the bulk of its talent from 2012's run to the Gainesville Super Regional, including preseason All-Americans Carlos Rodon and Trea Turner.

Seven ACC teams - all of which earned NCAA postseason berths in 2012 - are ranked among the top 35 of the poll. NC State represents the second-highest ranked conference squad.

The complete poll will be included in the Jan. 4 edition of Collegiate Baseball Newspaper alongside listings of top players in each league, projections for pitchers and players of the year, and the Louisville Slugger preseason All-America team.

Question for those in the know...are the Pack 9 deserving of such a lofty ranking at the time? I know we've got the stud freshmen coming back...but I also know we lost some senior bats. What say ye?

I think we are ranked about right......UNC is ranked too high and Clemson is ranked too low.

We are going to win a lot of games this year. The only bat we are looking to replace is Matthews and Diaz. There are plenty of guys ready to take over for them.

I am not in the know as much as others, but I will chime in..

Without knowing too much about other teams (the hard part about baseball polls), I say we are worth a top-15 spot.

Only lost 3 main players. Diaz was the biggest loss, IMO; solid glove, second most RBI, second highest average, great year last year. Mathews was hit or miss; highest slugging and OPS, but OPS was carried heavily by his slugging percentage, struck out too much (46 K/223 AB), walked rarely (18 BB/223 AB), not the most patient hitter at the plate. Ciencin was a leader, solid defensive first baseman, didn't hit as well as hoped at start of season.

Get Brett Williams back. Yet to be seen how effective/back to normal he is. When healthy/on, he is a very good player. Seems easy to slide him into the outfield spot Mathews was occupying last year; not sure what actual plan is. Don't know what we will do at first base; possibly Clyde, Senay, or Rodon are my guesses.

Pitching should be strong this year. Rodon and Ogburn back. Og's line did not look good from Fall World Series, but I was unable to make it, so I can't give any analysis of it. Pretty sure I heard that Jernigan was looking good this fall, I think/hope I am remembering that right. Zam will be back again. Bullpen should be improved, at least depth-wise. Overman, Wilkins, Healey, D.J. Thomas, Orwig are all back. Josh Easley and Sasser are back from surgery.

I would be interested to hear about the freshmen expected to make an impact. Hopefully Pack11* can chime in.

* Thanks JL.

Looks like a low ranking for Florida State also, they usually just reload and come back strong
last five seasons final ranking for FSU: # 7,9,6,6,4

Re: RELEASE: Pack Earns Highest Baseball Preseason Ranking Ever

Unless Carolina has a ridiculous new class, I agree they're ranked too high.  FSU I understand.  Ramsey is crazy good and they have to replace him and Boyd from the middle of the lineup.  We lose Diaz and Ciencin ETA: forgot about Matthews big bat we have to replace.  I think we are ranked about right, but I think we really make a push this year for a national seed as long as we stay healthy.

First time in many, many years we are ahead of FSU. UNC's ranking surprises me, considering how they flamed out in their own regional last season.

Nice post 71.  I believe you meant pack11, but yes he would know better than most I believe.  I think Armstrong will be an impact newcomer, but just a guess from looking at box scores from fall series.  Agree that Senay or Clyde should see time at 1B.  Third is where I think Armstrong slides in, but I could see Clyde or Ratledge there too.  And hopefully Williams is back at full strength, but if not I could see Austin seeing more time in RF, I thought he was pretty good out there towards the end of last season after he got a few games under his belt out there.  Rodon I could see at DH/1B depending on if they want him playing defense.  Pitching depth is definitely there.  I liked what Easley did out of the pen two years ago.  Will be nice to have Sasser still around to take over some of the leadership void left by Ciencin.  Don't believe Canela played in the fall series, so I hope he is ok and ready to go.

Much like 71, I have no connection to the team.  Just a fan that understands baseball.  Pack11 or fv would be able to tell us more.

Figured we might even be a bit higher, but this is plenty high enough to work towards a national seed.

You start out at around #10, and win 40+ in our conference, you have an excellent shot at being one of the top 8 once post-season starts.

Awesome news. Really excited about the season

Anybody know if there are any preseason college baseball magazines out there? Would like to pick up one to follow this year.

I hope the team enjoys great success this year and lives up to the preseason prediction and more.  But, as I said before basketball season, it's best to not take preseason polls too seriously.  Forget about it and earn your ranking on the field when the season starts.

IF...we ever get there, I will spend whatever it takes to make that trip.  #1 on my sports bucket list.   Give Doeren 3-4 years and I may revise my sports bucket list, however.
