Dino had more wins (61) in his 3 years than Skip had (59) in his last 3. Both made 2 NCAAs in that times span and made it as far as the 2nd round. By the numbers, he was matching Skip's pace. And I think everyone agrees Skip>Herb. By a wide margin...

The reason why Dino was let go due to him pissing off the higher ups and alumni. It has nothing to do with not winning..he had a real good winning percentage. However, due to them letting him go, they have fallen to the bottom of the tarpit (no pun intended). It sucks. I am from Winston and would like Wake to be competitive.

Re: Wake Forest - What a trainwreck.....
I never really hated Wake. It's kind of like hating a 5 year old for hitting a basketball shot against you in your driveway. Once in a while, it's going to happen.
Then they beat us far too many times in football over the last 10-12 meetings. They got too big for their britches, so I'm glad to see them knocked back down where they belong.
We should almost never lose to Wake. In anything.
I won't ever forget the time our students ran out onto the basketball court after we beat Wake. I guess State athletics had been so bad for so long that the students just lost their mind. All I could do was shed a tear like Iron Eyes Cody in that famous commercial from the 70's. In my mind, I was screaming, "YOU DON'T RUN ON THE COURT AFTER BEATING WAKE!! EVER!!"
But I also saw fans doing "the wave" in Carter-Finley a few times this year against some really awful competition. All I could do was shake my head. Hard to believe.
OK, I'm down of my soapbox now. *sigh*

I don't doubt your information...but why has no one hired him since? He appears to be able to win..at least with someone else's players. There must be more, something 'darker'...because he has not be hired by anyone else.

Maybe he's still getting paid by Wake and can't coach otherwise he loses money?

Re: Wake Forest - What a trainwreck.....
My recollection is that Wake was picked to finish dead last in the ACC Buzz's first year. That was even after Buzz convinced all of Dino's recruits to honor their commitments and before their center got kicked off the team for assaulting his girlfriend. Wake was going to suck that year regardless of if Buzz or Dino was the coach.

Re: Wake Forest - What a trainwreck.....
Wake has historically been one of the worst football teams in D1. Their basketball program has had moments of excitement, but tiers.
As NCAA conference consolidation continues, I'm not so sure Wake Forest is going to make it. I still think we're destined for four 16 team conferences based on football, and Wake doesn't bring enough of everything else to the table to make the cut.

Re: Wake Forest - What a trainwreck.....
I was surprised how quickly Wake Forest fans began to irritate me when they became consistently good under Dave Odom. Now I am surprised how quickly I begin to feel sorry for them again. Wellman is becoming a characature of himself. Odom became a victim of his own success which led to him leaving the best job a Wake Forest basketball coach ever created. Wellman seems to have been so successful in hiring coaches that he had the gumption to let Dino go for underachieving in March in spite if all his success from November to February. Just too big for his own britches. It is time for him to move on to make way for someone who needs to prove themself. No reason for Wake to be the worst team in the league while their AD is an apologist for a lame duck coach. It's still a better place to play basketball than most of the ACC.

OK, I'm down of my soapbox now. *sigh* Damn right No, it's not "Damn Right" If you replace WF with "NC State" in the above sentences, it makes you guys sound like self-righteous Tarheel fans. Wake doesn't "belong" at the bottom. If they're at the bottom of the league right now, it's because they've EARNED that spot. They simply aren't very good. When they had Levy, Gray, Williams, Paul, etc. on their team, they EARNED a high ranking, and they deserved to be considered one of the best teams in the country. IMO, we are EARNING people's respect. Gottfried and Co. are on the right track with building a sustainable program that will remind everyone in the ACC of what the Wolfpack CAN AND WILL BE. It's not about who deserves what or who belongs where. It's about what you go out and prove. As much as I can't stand Duke, they've EARNED the #1 spot in the country. They don't deserve to have that spot just b/c they wear a jersey that says DUKE on the front of it.

Apparently Dino got fired because he was a pompous know it all who let his players run wild. That being said, Wellman made a terrible hire and kicked a guy to the curb who was winning games. Wake just looks stupid now. Tiers.

And why any one would "call someone out for what was a valid opinion at the time"? It is beyond childish and immature but that is the standard around here.

Looks like Wake got rid of coach who couldn't get along with others and didn't keep an eye on his players and replaced him with someone who isn't a good coach. We'll see how the season plays out.

Extremely ironic, this. Has his new coach ever lost a post season game? Problem fixed. Dino Gaudio probably wakes up laughing at Wellman, and snickers throughout the day. The thing that's different with Gaudio is, his "lack of post-season success" was only like 3 seasons, right? It's not like he took 10 years to win more than one game in an NCAA tournament, he took over for a head coach who suddenly died.

Re: Wake Forest - What a trainwreck.....
What they are experiencing is nothing close to what we were dealing with when HWSNBN was here. Seriously, their train wreck is much worse. Our pain was his ceiling of making the tournament but doing nothing meaningful ever. Their pain is losing to Stetson, Winthrop, UNCW, Presbyterian, and Wofford, and getting blown out of the gym in ACC play. But it is certainly fun to play a part in the pain parade: What they have had are some of the worst losses of the ACC era. I made an extremely painful, but edifying traipse down misery lane to count up more than a dozen games where the bottom fell out. These aren’t 15 point losses to Duke or North Carolina. Actually, none were losses to Duke or North Carolina, because Duke and North Carolina should have belted Wake. The Deacons, to date, have yet to really be in a game against a team that finished in the first division of the ACC. Bzdelik is 0-17 against said opponents, and the average margin of defeat has been 18.8 points a game. And two of those debacles, the meltdown against Iona and the 16-point home no-show against Nebraska, have been inflicted this season. But disappointing as those two were, they weren’t of the really, really wretched variety like the 74-39 flogging by a Georgia Tech that won all of 13 games all season, or the 76-40 stomping Mark Gottfried, in his first season at N.C. State, administered last season. (That was the game that the Wake players didn’t need to know the offensive plays. Assistant Bobby Lutz of N.C. State spent the whole game telling them, his team and everyone else within earshot where they were going before they got there). Even with that, the lowest of the low moments, the absolute nadir, had to be 80-55 home shellacking by N.C. State the season before. The Wolfpack finished their season at 15-16 and Sidney Lowe finished his without a job.
