Just watched some YouTube videos of Jim Brown. Man defenses back then were a shell of what they are today.

Jim Brown was a great athlete when there were no great Athletes in the NFL. You put Adrian Peterson in that era and watch what he does. If I have to pick 1 RB and 1 WR to play in 1 game in their prime I'm still taking AD and Megatron.

Secondly, Emmitt Smith isn't in the top 5 RB's of all time.

Doesn't Sanders hold the all-time record for runs resulting in negative yards?

Best RB in a short period of time....

Earl Campbell

Best RB for a long career

Emmitt Smith

Best Running Back Ever....

Jim Brown

Peterson is good, no doubt about it....but I don't think there is a strong argument for best.

Honestly though, I would like to see what Calvin Johnson could do with a perennial pro-bowl TE on his team with Steve Young throwing him the ball, or what AD could do behind that 1995 Dallas Cowboys O-Line. Simon Birch could average 5ypc behind those monsters.

Hooligan, since your football knowledge extends to 5 years ago, please don't discuss any football from a decade ago.

Thanks.

Re: Adrian Peterson falls 9 yards short. Greatest RB all-time?

And I know I'll draw fire here....

but Barry Sanders is not the greatest RB of all-time...not even close in my opinion.

He was the most exciting back of all-time.  I'll give him that.   However, he was not good at short-yardage.  He did not do well in the red zone, and he had many plays where he lost chunks of yardage which stalled drives.   I loved to watch the guy play and he was exciting, and one of the best backs in the league.  However, I can't mention him as the best when his team often took him off the field in short yardage.  Fun to watch though.

Also, the argument about Brown not enduring extra games is crazy!   He also didn't get those 4 extra games of statistics.   Yes, the game is much different today.  Athletes are better today, BUT they also have the pansy rules today.   Dick Butkus and Ray Nitschke would be tossed after the first play not for unnecessary roughness, but for Brutality!  Not to mention Chuck Bednarik....talk about a beast.  Those RB's were one hit away.   The thing is that Brown was fast and punishing...he could play in any era.

I'd put Barry Sanders and Emmitt in that over rated category. Unless, of course, we are talking about dancing.

Lol!

OK... I told myself I would not get banned this year, no matter how ridiculous I thought a comment was. Dang... this is only the first week. This is going to be tougher than I thought.

Sanders had so many negative yardage runs because his OL was porous.  He was taken out in short yardage and goal line situations because his coaches were fools.  His first 3 years in the league he scored 14, 13 and 16 TD and then they decided he should be taken out at the goal line and short yardage dropping him into single digits the next 3 years...BRILLIANT!

The change in blocking rules (extend arms into defender) and defensive coverage (couldn't beat the receiver up downfield) eventually led to an easier passing game, which we see today. You can easily make a case that offensive statistics in the "old days" are more impressive than today's by the rules of the game alone.

These two concepts are extremely important.

Back then OL had to grasp their own jersey at the chest and block with their elbows out. If you extended your arms, you were holding. The DL was also able to bash the hell out of the OL's helmet with their hands, "ringing his bell".

DB's could mug the receiver all the way downfield until the ball was in the air. The five yard check rule came in in the late 70's and the head slap was outlawed.

Different times, different rules but Jim Brown was the man.

Sweetness says hello.

My only knock on Sweetness was that he would step out of bounds to avoid the contact something that #32 would NEVER do.
You might want to watch some video.  Sweetness ALWAYS looked to pop someone before he stepped out.

WolfBlitz's post was full of ignorance. Walter Payton never ran out of bounds to avoid being tackled. It wasn't in his DNA to do that. If anything, the defenders ran out of bounds so they wouldn't have to tackle him.

Payton always got lower than the defender and delivered the hit in every run I can remember.

Calvin Johnson playing back then? LOL.  He will go down as one of the best football players ever for sure.

How popular was football back then in comparison to baseball/basketball/boxing/etc...

Defenses were certainly NOT a shell of what they are today. For their era they were among the greatest ever. The 1960s Packers were awesome, the 1960s Baltimore Colts were awesome, you had the legendary Fearsome Foursome of the LA Rams, the Vikings Purple People Eaters were coming to prominence in the 1960s, and the Dallas Cowboys doomsday defense was a standard bearer in the late 1960s. Hell, even the AFL's Buffalo Bills was a respected defense during the mid 1960s.

The era of the 1960s was unique and was probably much too conservative to be a great product, but the talent is undeniable.

I will be pulling for Peterson this weekend as i think Green Bay is the team to beat in the  NFC. I would rather Wilson face any of the others than go to Lambeau.

Peterson sat down with Marshall Faulk of the NFL Network this morning to break it down.

He intends to blow it out the water next season. Dickerson finished with 2,105 yards in 1985. Peterson wants 2,500.

“I want to try to set the ball higher than that,” Peterson said. “I want to make it the 2,500 club.

“It’s definitely out there. I feel like it’s definitely attainable. … Enjoy this last year because the record’s going down, with ease.”
