Yep.  UTC has a very good program.  He would have received excellent coaching there.

The Pack will return to action this Saturday, traveling to Gardner-Webb for a dual meet against the Bulldogs at 6:30 p.m.

Didnt know Joe Deangelo transferred in from UTC. Did he have to sit first semester or did he just enroll in the winter and was eligible?
I believe he had to sit out the first semester. Picking up Joe was huge, in my opinion. He has the potential to really help us at 125 lbs.
Glad to have him on board.  I know him as a hard working kid so it should work out with him and Coach Pop

I was in high school going against Southern Alamance when he was there and he really is just a nasty wrestler.  There was pretty much nobody who could even come close to matching the talent level of him or his brothers.  I'm glad to see that State was able to pick him up.  He has the potential to do some great things for us while here these last 2 years.

The NC State wrestling team improved its dual meet record to 3-0 after defeating Gardner Webb, 22-16, on Saturday in Paul Porter Arena. The Wolfpack and Bulldogs each won five matches, but State had the edge in the final point standings due to a major decision and two falls.

NC State will return to action in its home opener on Friday, Jan. 18 against American University at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum.

When so many major colleges dropping wrestling (i.e. Clemson, Syracuse), how in the world has little ole Gardner-Webb held on to a mens wrestling team?  What's the back story?  did some wealthy G-W alum endow the program?

Because of title IX it is easier for smaller schools to have wrestling because a lot of them do not have football programs.  In short Title IX states that a school must give out as many Women's scholarships as they do Men's.  If a school has football and does not have sports like women's gymnastics, softball, etc. It makes it really hard to keep a wrestling team.

I grew up near the school so I've heard they've had some donors really support the program over the past 15 years or so. They are one of the better "small school" wrestling programs in the region. The Medved kid at 157 lbs. is no joke and they've got a few others that are good as well.

But Gardner Webb does have football. Granted, fewer scholarships than FBS schools, however.

Big weekend coming up for the Wolfpack. They have a meet at home tomorrow against American University and then they open up their ACC schedule on Sunday against the # 1 team in the ACC (and a top ten team nationally). No pressure on the young Wolfpack team heading into the meet at Blacksburg but it will be a good chance to see what things they need to work on. Virginia Tech is loaded so I know this team is hungry to test themselves against them.

RE: 2012-2013 NC State Wrestling Thread (3-0, 0-0)

Knew this season would have a lot of growing pains and last night's 21-16 loss to American University highlighted that. Still, fans need to understand that this team is already better than it's been in years and next year should be a big turnaround for us. Tomorrow we'll face the best team in the ACC and one of the best teams in America when we travel to Virginia Tech. It will be good experience for the team, though. We're now 3-1 on the season heading into that matchup. Last night's winners were Speno, Hunt, Nereim and Davis. The records for the team now stand at:

As Wolfer79 showed, DeAngelo, Speno, Hunt, Gantt and Jones won last night while Nereim, Davis, Peltier, Cook and Kosoy lost. Below are their updated records.

- HWT - Nick Gwiazdowski (SO) 20-1 *Redshirting this season
- HWT - Mike Kosoy (FR) 13-14
- HWT - Josh Davis (SO) 3-8
- 197 - Karonne Jones (SR) 5-2
- 197 - Josh Lackey (FR) 3-8
- 197 - Bill Cook (SO) 1-3
- 184 - Keegan Cerwinski (0-1)
- 184 - Brett Peltier (FR) 0-7
- 174 - Patrick Davis (FR) 13-11
- 174 - Steve Ramos (SO) 2-2
- 165 - Nijel Jones (JR) 22-7
- 165 - Ryan Fox (SO) 10-8
- 157 - Matt Nereim (JR) 11-9
- 157 - Mardel Gabriel (FR) 7-8
- 149 - Thomas Gantt (SO) 10-4
- 149 - Cohl Fulk (FR) 5-6
- 149 - Gabe Lavey (FR) 4-5
- 141 - Tyler Hunt (FR) 15-6
- 141 - Michael Avelar (FR) 4-5
- 133 - Sam Speno (FR) 14-5
- 133 - Patrick Hutton (FR) 0-3
- 125 - Joe DeAngelo (JR) 2-2

RE: 2012-2013 NC State Wrestling Thread (3-1, 0-0)

Tomorrow State matches up with the ACC leading Virginia Tech Hokies. Virginia Tech is 10-2 (3-0 ACC) and we are 3-2 (0-0 ACC). The matchups could be:

- HWT - David Marone (VT; 10-6) vs. Mike Kosoy (NCSU; 13-14)
- 197 lbs.- Derrick Borlie (VT; 13-7) vs. Bill Cook (NCSU; 1-3)
- 184 lbs.- Sam Law (VT; 8-3) vs. Patrick Davis (NCSU; 13-11)
- 174 lbs.- Huston Evans (VT; 17-6) vs. Nijel Jones (NCSU; 22-7)
- 165 lbs.- Pete Yates (VT; 21-1) vs. Mardel Gabriel (NCSU; 7-8)
- 157 lbs.- Jesse Dong (VT; 15-2) vs. Matt Nereim (NCSU; 11-9)
- 149 lbs.- Nick Brascetta (VT; 20-2) vs. Thomas Gantt (NCSU; 10-4)
- 141 lbs.- Zach Neibert (VT; 15-6) vs. Tyler Hunt (NCSU; 15-6)
- 133 lbs.- Erik Spjut (VT; 10-7) vs. Sam Speno (NCSU; 14-5)
- 125 lbs.- Jarrod Garnett (VT; 18-2) vs. Joe DeAngelo (NCSU; 2-2)

The way I look at it, if we can win a couple of matchups and be competitive in a few more I'll consider that a sign of real progression. The NCSU teams you'll see next season and the season after will be all the better for the experiences gained in this first year with the new staff (and their recruiting efforts).

- HWT - David Marone (VT; 9-6) vs. Mike Kosoy (NCSU; 13-14) - Win here would be big
- 197 lbs.- Derrick Borlie (VT; 12-7) vs. Bill Cook (NCSU; 1-3) - Probable L, but Cook is an unknown.
- 184 lbs.- Sam Law (VT; 8-3) vs. Patrick Davis (NCSU; 13-11) - Tossup
- 174 lbs.- Huston Evans (VT; 17-6) vs. Nijel Jones (NCSU; 22-7) - Must win for Jones
- 165 lbs.- Pete Yates (VT; 20-1) vs. Mardel Gabriel (NCSU; 7-8) - L
- 157 lbs.- Jesse Dong (VT; 14-2) vs. Matt Nereim (NCSU; 11-9) - L
- 149 lbs.- Nick Brascetta (VT; 19-2) vs. Thomas Gantt (NCSU; 10-4) - L
- 141 lbs.- Zach Neibert (VT; 15-6) vs. Tyler Hunt (NCSU; 15-6) - Need a win here
- 133 lbs.- Erik Spjut (VT; 9-7) vs. Sam Speno (NCSU; 14-5) - Need a win here
- 125 lbs.- Jarrod Garnett (VT; 18-1) vs. Joe DeAngelo (NCSU; 2-2) - L

4 probable losses there, would be nice if all of them were by decision. Question is can we gain the points back in some tossup matches. Problem is some of the records for the VT guys are misleading cause they're all pretty good.

I've updated the records above after Virginia Tech's win at Chapel Hill today. They won 32-9, but UNC only won 1 of the 9 matchups. They got six of their points from a forfeit at 141 pounds. Virginia Tech is really, really strong. It will be fun to have our guys really test themselves in this matchup. Meets like this are where you really become a better wrestler.

I didn't really follow college wrestling outside of the ACC back in the day.  When we had our really good run in the 80s/90s  ago under Guzzo and early in Jordan's tenure and were nationallly ranked, was Virginia Tech this good?  Or has VPI only recently built this program into a powerhouse?

coaching change is biggest difference, it appears

Kevin Dresser enters his seventh season at the helm of the Virginia Tech wrestling program, a program that he has headed toward the upper echelon of the college game.

Dresser’s recruiting has taken off as the Hokies have had a top-25 recruiting class in each year Dresser’s been at the helm, including six classes rated in the top 11 nationally.

based on NCAA performances, they have had a solid program prior to current coach going back to 1998

Thx for link.

So new VPI coach has been here for all but first two of the years VPI's been in ACC...and last year was VPI's breakout season in the coach's sixth year...highest NCAA finish in school history by a long shot.

Nice job of program building at a place that had no more (and probably less) success than us historically.  Hope our guy can get similar results in a few years.

Results from today's meet with top ten Virginia Tech:

- 125 lbs.- #4 Garnett (VT) def. DeAngelo (NCSU) 15-4
- 133 lbs.- Spjut (VT) def. Spen (NCSU) 3-2
- 141 lbs.- Hunt (NCSU) wins by forfeit
- 149 lbs.- #6 ranked Brascetta (VT) def. Gantt (NCSU) 7-1
- 157 lbs. #7 ranked Dong (VT) def. Nereim (NCSU) by Technical Fall 15-6
- 165 lbs.- #5 Yates (VT) wins by forfeit
- 174 lbs.- Gabel (VT) def. Davis (NCSU) 12-8
- 184 lbs.- Vetterlein (VT) def. Cerwinski (NCSU) by Pinfall
- 197 lbs.- Borlie (VT) def. Cook (NCSU) by Pinfall
- HWT     - Marone (VT) def. Kosoy (NCSU) by Major Decision 14-3

Virginia Tech wins the meet with a score of 40-6. State scored their only points on a forfeit. All part of the learning process for this young team, folks. There will be more like this but things will be changing in ACC wrestling over the next two years. State's opponents should enjoy this while they can.

does anyone know why Nigel Jones didn't wrestle today?

Also, recently I've been seeing him up at 174 instead of 165. Does anyone know why? Is it to cover for another wrestler missing at 174, is it to make room for another good wrestler at 165, or he can't make weight, or has he decided to stay at 174 the rest of the way?

No idea why Nijel didn't wrestle yesterday. I'd like to know the answer to that too. As far as why he's competed at 174, I'm almost positive it was a strategy decision for Coach Pop. We are weak right now at 184 and 197, especially. I think he liked our chances a little better by moving Patrick Davis up to 184 in the American University meet, moving Nijel Jones up to 174 and letting Mardel Gabriel give 165 a try. Didn't really work out (though Davis did win his match) but I think it was probably the right call.

Really tough part of the schedule here with the Wolfpack taking on its second Top 11 ranked team in a week. State trails 11th ranked Virginia 19-7 with three matches to go. Nereim and Davis have won, while DeAngelo, Speno, Hunt, Gantt and Jones have lost.

Actually, that wasn't a very good result at all against VA.  The two weights State won both came because VA chose not to wrestle a top-20 ranked wrestler there, so it should have  been a shutout.

So the next match is the big one against UNC.  Does anyone have any predictions or can break it down weight by weight so we can see how it might turn out?
