Atlanta Braves 2012-2013 Off-Season "Hot Stove" Thread
Okay, time to put that miserable "Infield Fly Game" in the rear view mirror. Speculation that Bourn is going to the Nationals because he's going to want too much money, and Shane Victorino may be an alternative if it's a short-term deal. 12. Shane Victorino - Braves. Victorino must re-establish his reputation as an above-average outfielder, after an off-year hitting right-handed pitching. I imagine Victorino will be open to all three outfield positions, which would create a wide market potentially including the Braves, Rangers, Nationals, Giants, Orioles, Red Sox, Yankees, Rays, Blue Jays, and Tigers, and if the price is low enough, Reds and Mets. He's a strong Plan B in the likely event the Braves are outbid for Bourn, but if the bidding reaches three guaranteed years on Victorino I can see some teams dropping out. I'd love to have Victorino. While I was very high on Bourne and all he did for us, he really did fail in the drive for pennant/postseason, leaving me wondering if he's on a fast decline now. Victorino is older, but also has shown "staying power," you might say.
What ever became of Rick Ankiel?

Rick Ankiel was signed by the Nats at the start of the season. Played in 68 games ans started in CF for 37 of those. he hit .228 with five home runs and 15 RBI in 158 at-bats. he was designated for assignment on 7/27 after closer Drew Storen was added to the roster. He is currently as free agent.

Just saw where Pascual Perez was killed in a home invasion in the Dominican Republic. I remember when he missed a start for the Braves when he couldn't find the stadium. Colorful guy...sad news. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_...inican-republic

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_...inican-republic Yeah, that saddened me to see this. I'll never forget the Padres tryin g to hit him with a pitch when he game to bat in that 1984 game. Man, he was like Plastic Man......It seems like the Padres pitcher about 4 pitches to finally nail him....He just kept dodging the pitches...... He was a fun and colorful Brave !!!!

I, too, question if his hitting is in decline. I think the thing that tips the scales for me against re-signing Bourn is the money and the length of contract that he will reportedly be seeking. Given the Braves budget, we just can't afford a smaller scale "A-Rod" type contract....

I remember that game vividly. This was NOT your typical baseball brawl. This was a full-on fistfight.
Perez should have taken the pitch from Whitson in the back like a man and let it die. It wasn't like they were throwing at his head at 100 mph. Perez was a seriously strange man though.
Alan Wiggins was a sad case. Major cocaine addiction and he ended up dying of AIDS in 1991.

Braves acquire Jordan Schafer on waivers from Houston. If that kid could ever put it all together he'd be an elite lead off man. He could hit 15 homers, 30 doubles with 50+ steals.

Crap. There is their fall back now when they DON'T sign Bourne or Victorino.....Schafer.
You do realize that is the quote for probably EVERY prospect ever to sniff the majors.."IF they could just put it all together". I am not dissing you I just don't think he will ever get it done.
I know Bourne folded like a summer chair but leadoff and 1st base have been the Braves' achilles heel for 10 years and they FINALLY had both. I really wish they would sign Bourne. I think I remember him being a Boras guy so he will probably be asking for fantasy money.
I understand not throwing the bank at him....it just still sucks.

This has been a great off-season flashback !!!! I've probably been to 20 Braves games in my life. This was one of them and Phil Niekro's only no-hitter was another one. Also saw a number of HR's by The Hammer. My dad picked some good ones to go to! Quite an entertaining game. I think it actually took three at-bats before they finally hit Perez. I also rember Kurt Bevacqua (sp?) trying to go into the stands after someone threw a beer on him. Donnie Moore nailing Graig Nettles with a haymaker when he rushed to the mound after being plunked in the butt. Perez nailed Alan Wiggins right in the small of the back with the first pitch of the game IIRC. Three bench-clearing brawls.

What ever became of Rick Ankiel? Wow....Funny you should ask about Ankiel.....MLBTradeRumore just posted this...Pitching again?.....Why the heck not?....He was dominant for about 1 season until he lost his contol - Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch hears Rick Ankiel is open to giving pitching another shot. The Cardinals could be among the teams willing to give Ankiel another chance on the mound. Ankiel pitched for the Cardinals from 1999-2004, putting together a strong season as a 20-year-old in 2000. He returned to the big leagues as a hitter in 2007.
Read more at http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/#73orB1aMPxvDXho3.99...............and here's info on Bourn's salary demands......Given that Boras is involved, I would not be surprised if he doesn't talk some poor team into over-paying for Bourn... - Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com hears word that Michael Bourn could be looking for as much as $100MM in free agency. The Phillies would probably be reluctant to spend that kind of money on a 30-year-old player who relies heavily on his legs, Salisbury writes.

Braves picked up Jordan Schaefer off waivers from the Astros (how bad do you have to be to get cut by Houston?). NOT the answer for CF. Maybe a bench player for late inning defense or pinch running. DO NOT let this guy anywhere near the leadoff spot.

Actually, Jordan had quite the upside as a lead-off guy, IMO. I don't know how he did last year, but as you say, it couldn't have been that good if he was let go by Houston. Could be an interesting development before all is said and done, though. Clearly the Braves still like him. i also like bernadina if the nats decide that he is odd man out in their outfield picture I don't think picking up Schaefer means they are out of the market for an outfielder. If Prado moves to the INF, then they'll have to replace 2 starting outfielders. Plus you always need bench help.

Schaefer is only a .221 career hitter (.204 this past season) and strikes out almost 3 times as much as he walks. Not what you want out of a leadoff hitter.
Kid weighs about a buck 75 and thinks he's Hank Aaron. Always swinging for the fences instead of slapping the ball and using his great speed.

I still think Schafer could make it, Bourn was a terrible hitter until his age 26 season. Also he strikes out about twice as much as he walks (70 so /155 bb) for 2012 and he's 296/679 for his career. Schafer also has more natural gap power. True he needs some work, but if the kid finally buys in to what a hitting coach is preaching to him he could be a good major leaguer. He's got a nice swing and incredible wheels/defensive instinct.
The Braves are stuck on this kid because of his potential, but at this point he's merely depth unless something goes incredibly wrong (or incredibly right for Jordan) between now and opening day.

Re: Atlanta Braves 2012-2013 Off-Season "Hot Stove"
I don't think that #44 will make it . My dad was the biggest Braves fan ever! He always had them on tv. It used to drive my wife crazy, when we visited him. I gave him a Braves jacket and hat, which he wore everywhere. I wanted to have him buried in this outfit, but my younger brother insisted on a suit and tie. I deferred. I regret it to this day, but debating the issue at the funeral home would have ben disrespectful. My dad was 89 when he died. Whoever at TWC that decided we should get the Nats instead of the Braves, should be kicked in the groin: then shot . Btw, I live outside Raleigh. I could care less about the Nats. To an oldtimer like me, this shows our viewing audience disrespect. I used to live in C'ville Va. and could always get Braves baseball. They (twc) have removed any interest I have in baseball. Disgruntled (former) baseball fan.

^ It wasn't a TWC decision...... MLB made that unfortunate call. It was part of the deal that allowed the Nationals to re-locate within Baltimore's territory. I'm fortunate in that I live just inside the Braves territory. It's just like the good old days for me, except I still miss Skip. Chip tries his best, but he just doesn't have his dad's flair
