What is striking, at least to me, is that we only have 5 games against top 25 teams (2 unc, 2 duke, 1 Michigan).

In the AP/UPI?  Not in the sagarin/rpi/pomeroy, although it is way to early to even reference.  Either way......we are on the other side of the rankings this time around.

Wow - our schedule does not have many real high RPI stinkers this year - and the ACC RPI is looking better too (more like traditional years and not like the last 3 or so with the bottom of the ACC around the 200+ area). This bodes well for all ACC schools at the end of the year!
GO PACK!!! BEAT UCONN!!!

I'm more impressed with the win over Cleveland St now after seeing their RPI now. I thought they were in the 200's.

Not many opportunities for top 50 wins in the ACC. Have to beat Duke and UNC and hope UConn keeps winning.

Oh and Miami too. Didn't see them at 49.

Several ACC schools have the potential to really move up these rankings just based on SOS once conference play begins.

RE: Annual Basketball Opponent Record/RPI/Kenpom/Sagarin 12/10/2

After doing this for years, like GoPack said, once ACC play starts, the haves will seperate themselves from the have-nots.

Like BC and WF at the bottom last year. It's looking like UVa, WF, and BC will be the only cellar dwellars.

VT can score.

GT's defense will keep them in games.

Leonard Hamilton will have his squad turned around.

Clemson will be middle the road, they're young in the backcourt.

Marylad has looked tough as nails this year.

Miami can beat anyone, or lose to anyone.

And UNC and Duke are UNC and Duke. Of course UNC looks a bit weaker cause they're so young, but still got burger boys coming in and out of the game.

ETA: It is really awesome to see that there are only 2 teams with and RPI above 200 this early in the season. I recall there being quite a few last year even. I find that surprising with the teams we're playing. Pomeroy and Sagarin may not agree, but RPI is the main barometer.

Yes, last time I checked there were 3 teams in the "others" category for (AP) rankings, too. More opportunities for quality wins.

Miami #42
Maryland #78
Virginia Tech #100

Georgia Tech not on the cusp of being ranked, but they are #63 in RPI as of this morning.

On a side note, we moved back up to #11. lol.

UMass #79 W
Ok St. #36 L
Mich #2 L
UConn #17 W
Cleveland St #106 W. (This one may be a top 100 RPI win by the time the regular season finishes).
Stanford #96
W Mich #91

I am pleased to see good RPI's for almost our opponents except UNCA and UNCG. That helped a lot last year at tourney selection time.

RE: Annual Basketball Opponent Record/RPI/Kenpom/Sagarin 12/10/2

Just to add more topics of discussion, the most recent Bracketology is out.

State a 6 seed in South Regional, vs Belmont, in Kansas City.

Opponents:

Michigan a 1 seed
OK St a 6 seed
Stanford a 12 seed
Norfolk St a 16 seed

Stanford 1 of "Last Four In"

ACC:
Duke a 1 seed
UNC a 5 seed (rolleyes)
Miami an 8 seed
Virginia a 12 seed
FSU an 11 seed (eek)
Maryland an 11 seed

Virginia, FSU 2 of "Last Four In"
VT 1 of "First Four Out"

Also has Kentucky as a 5 seed.

Boy, we really dodged an absolute RPI disaster in that UNC-Asheville.  If that's the closest we come to a TOB style WTF loss this year, I will be very happy.  If Ok. State ends the year in bottom half of Big 12, we will likely look back on that one as a WTF performance also...

Hey NCSUman, could you put a "total" at the bottom of all teams (not including NC State, and double counting teams which appear twice)?  It would give us a feel for how our RPI will change as the teams we haven't yet played are included in the calculations...

FWIW, GT is about to get a depth and talent infusion for the rest of the season.

Stacey Poole becomes eligible to play once his grades post next week (hopefully in time for him to play Monday) and his younger brother PG Solomon Poole graduated from HS early (played his last HS game against Kasey Hill Friday night) and enrolled at GT this week, will start practicing on Saturday and is waiting NCAA Clearance to be eligible to play the remainder of this season. (Solomon is a similar situation to Jarnell Stokes at UT last year)

What do you mean exactly by "total"? Or do you mean average and would you like me to count ACC teams we play twice as once or count x's 2?

Awesome to see UMass climb up to top 50 RPI.

I don't get that SOS. Is that the SOS to date or the SOS looking at the current rankings of all the teams on that schedule? For example, Ok St SOS is 174. 174! Are they even worthy of being in the top 25 with that SOS?

I also believe the fact they beat us and only have one loss makes their case. Even though we're 25/NR, we have a lot of pull.

thanks for the chart.  It's interesting to me that we're considered a good win and that's what's keeping OSU in the top 25 but by the same token, that appears to be considered a bad loss for us even though they're ranked higher (now).

Elon.
How in the world did beating Elon cause their RPI to climb into top 50?  There must be something I'm not getting about RPI calculations...did Elon play someone else in the top 50 really close?

I don't know why they climbed to 50, but Elon's 1st game was against Butler (RPI 2). Got beat down, so maybe that is part of it.

What are the actual ratings for a good/bad lose.

I thought a "good" win was considered a top 50 win.

Was a "bad" lose, 200+ or 150 lose?

I don't know the metrics, but my perception is, in our case vs. OSU, is that we lost by 20 and looked bad doing it.  A bad loss not because of who we lost to or their ranking when we did, but because of how we played.  Particularly after the media hyped us up so much.
