Average Life Span For an NFL Player

55. This is kinda scary.

The result is a dramatically shortened life span: While white men in the United States on average live to age 78 and African-American men to about 70, “it appears that professional football players in both the United States and Canada have life expectancies in the mid- to late-50s,” Harvard researchers wrote in a summary of their project.

Not to make light of that sad statistic, but on average they probably outlive the average 'professional' wrestler.

alot of it has to do with what happens after football ends. if they do not keep in shape, the muscle becomes fat. Also, head injuries or just trauma to the head can have consequences later in life.  I am sure there are other factors esp. if steroids are involved....abuse of steroids or prolonged use of steroids damage bones and I am sure other organs.  Football is a rough sport physically.  It abuses the body.

You know what they say about statistics.... I recently heard an interview on sports radio ( and read an article on line) that said these stats are misleading. The doctor being interviewed said nfl players tend to live longer due to being in much better shape than the average person. The article is online at Sports Illustrated Vault by David Epstein and is dated 5/21/12. si.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1198483/index.htm
It said 2 studies refute that claim. Who knows which conclusion is true. You can usually find a study to support any view you want to hold.
The study that claimed age 55 was done in 1990 at the request of the NFLPA. The same organization did a later study that concluded that NFL players, on average, live longer. Only the 1990 stat seems to get cited in the current bash football culture that is popular among a media that tends to want to soften our society. Maybe all boys should just wear knee socks and play European futball. No, that won't work either. Heading the ball also causes concussions.
