Mo Walker out for season

Here is the press release I received about an hour ago from the University of Minnesota Athletic Communications...

The University of Minnesota basketball program announced today that freshman forward Maurice Walker will miss the remainder of the 2010-11 season with a torn posterior cruciate ligament and meniscus. Walker suffered the injury on Dec. 23 against South Dakota State.

Walker is scheduled to undergo surgery in the upcoming weeks, although a date has yet to be determined.

“We feel extremely saddened for Mo Walker. He was doing everything we asked him to do this season and was playing extremely well for us, said Gopher head coach Tubby Smith. “We have some of the best medical people in the country at the University of Minnesota so they will make sure that the surgery and ensuing rehabilitation goes well. His positive attitude is going to be the key in his rehab. I know that he will be the biggest cheerleader we have the remainder of the season.”

Walker, a native of Scarborough, Ontario, has appeared in all 12 of Minnesota’s games this season and holds averages of 3.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 9.6 minutes per game. He scored a season high 10 points in 15 minutes off the bench in the Gophers’ 83-73 victory over St. Joseph’s on Dec. 8 in Philadelphia.

Are they going to burn Elliot's red-shirt then or have a go at it with 3 Bigs?

Eliason's dressed tonight but I doubt they would want to waste his redshirt but who knows. Either way, not having Mo on the bench is a huge blow.

The rule says that a player has to have played in less than 20% of the team's scheduled games in order to be eligible for a medical redshirt. Looks like Mo can't get a redshirt.

If Robbie Hummel can pull multiple redshirts out of his arse then one would hope the Gophers could figure out a way to get Walker a redshirt year.

Hummel has only had one redshirt and it was allowed since his injury occurred before the season even started.

On the possibility of Elliot Eliason playing for the injured Mo Walker:

“I’m watching a guy like Elliot who’s playing extremely in practice. You know, so I don’t want to get, you know, I want to do justice for him but I’ve got to first look out for the program and do what’s best for the program. And certainly I think that may be something we have to look at, in bringing him out of redshirt. I’m serious about that because I think that, God forbid anything to happen to any our other of our big men, then we’re down to two guys like we were last year. “

Good luck to Mo. It would be great to have him around but I'm sure this will work out.

Forgot to say this:  Hope you have a speedy recovery Big Mo and can't wait to see you back on the court next season.  Hopefully you can rehab and start working out as soon as possible and get into shape because you have the potential to be a really effective big for us in the years to come.
