I like this team

I like this team

I think that this stretch of games will pay big dividends come tourney time.  They have played several of the best teams in the nation and know that they can hang with them.  Tubby has some definite things he can work on with the team and it is still awhile until tourney time.  The biggest thing I am looking for in the next few games is whether or not they can take care of business with the teams they are supposed to beat.  I think this is a legit Sweet 16 team.

RE: I like this team

I like the team a lot. At least the starters. I don't like Tubby. He continues to make bad decision regarding players. Heres Rodney's tweet from last night "Damn we got threw waaaaayyyyy under the bus tonight fellas". And he's right. If this were the first time Tubby had thrown a player under the bus I'd be on his side. But he's done it over and over again and I have a difficult time respecting him because of this. He lacks class and a filter way too often. When we had the rash of transfers he called it adition by subtraction. Regardless of whether this statement is accurate it SHOULD NOT have been said publicly let alone a press conference. I think Tubby will take the team far enough to protect his job for a couple more years which I think is unfortunate because I don't think he is the guy to take us to where we want to be and I think Norwood could bring in someone that would have a better chance to do so. /rant

recap what Tubby said to throw a kid under the bus,  not saying he didnt i just too lazy to go get the video and listen to it.

my son and I have a theory that Tubby uses his substitution paterns unlilke any other coach in the country?  It appears he has 5-6 players that are top 10 type players and may another 1-3 that are top 25 team worthy.  and when the team is playing against better teams he subs fullscale or close to full scale and those players that are good not great lose momentum and then it is too hard to catch back up.  seen this in the last two games.

if he continues this pattern through the end of the season we can expect the same results as last night.  He also is not working the refs like other coaches are, is he waiting until tournament time to start working the refs?

In the presser he essentially said we lost because we didn't want it. He NEVER takes any responsibility for our losses and takes the credit for the wins. We don't win enough to make that ok on top of being paid over 2 million and keeping that joke of a coach known as Saul Smith on his staff. He needs to make it to the sweet 16 for me to be convinced he is worth it. I don't see that happening. He also doesn't recruit that well. His name got us Rodney, Trevor and that other guy. I'm not sure how we got the Hollins' but I know we were Dre's backup. Coleman has been the only other good recruit. He's missed on so many guys. Its ridiculous.

Yeah I don't know what this is about getting thrown under a bus.  The only significant quote I saw was that Tubby said they had a crappy practice and the way you practice is the way you play, I believe is what was said.

As for the subbing it had seemed like he had changed it up a little bit but then slowly started with the mass subs.  Some of it has to do with the energy our starters are bringing.  There are some games where they just looked lethargic and didn't really seem to be in it to start the games.  Dre really got into foul trouble and picked up two fouls early in the first and then welch was on fire in the first half so I really can't blame Tubby for leaving Dre on the bench when Welch was lighting it up.

I really like our team our starting 5 are top notch.  Our bench it's been Mav well thats it.  Eliason hasn't shown that same fire as he did late last season, Welch has been in a shooting slump till this game.  Don't know what to make of Oto but then again he's only had 14 combined minutes the last 3 games. And Ingram well I don't know.  Needless to say our bench really needs to step it up.

Our offense has been there in every game and so has our D.  Even though Michigan, Indiana and Duke shot the lights out against us we weren't giving up too many uncontested shots.

The issue has been TURNOVERS.  We get lethargic and then we just start committing stupid turnovers and against good teams they'll kill you with points off turnovers.  And its weird because we've seen them go from throwing the ball away to looking very crisp and just putting a stop to the sloppy ballhandling.  If only they could do that for an entire game.

Shhh..... My Common Sense is Tingling.

RE: I like this team

OK so we might not be a top 10 team and maybe closer to a top 15 team than we all like.

we do however have a good outlook for guard play for at least the next few years.  My next question woudl be where are we going to find interior play the next few years.  I thought Elliot was going to help out there but has digressed since being pulled from the starting lineup for Trevor.  Big Mo is well big and slow and at times shows weakness that a big man should never have at his size.  slow and weak is not a good combo.

Tubby is safe for now as his team will win enough to keep Sid happy.  as long as Tubby eats dinner once in a while with Sid.

hopefully the rest of the big ten season will help get more guys into a rythmn and propell the gophers into the dance with a good seed to help us get to 16 or beyond

michigan fan here your guys should love your team. You have only lost to top 5 teams. You have everything you need to make a deep run in the tournament. Good point guard, good 3 point shooting, great rebounding, a couple of bigs that can block shots and score down low. there is no reason you cant make it to the final 4

Frodo...Couldn't disagree with you more.

I'd say the team got thrown under the bus...by their own pathetic free-throw performance, which makes Tubby right, actually. That was enough to lose the game right there. so...wanna blame Tubby for missed free throws? Or maybe you want to blame Tubby for sitting Rodney down when he popped two foolish fouls early.

Rodney was out of control at the beginning and out of synch at the end. That's not on Tubby. I figured Tubby sat him long enough to ensure he'd have him on the court at the end of the game. If that's "throwing Rodney under the bus", you have conflict issues. Maybe Rodney has gone to the AJ Barker school of communication.

I'm really tired of the trash talk against Tubby? What's your solution? Rick Petino? Yup, you're a deep thinker...

I watched. I agree with Tubby. the team is too good to let that happen...unless they didn't see the loss coming...

We now have a competent AD. I trust him to make the right decision regarding Tubby. If he thinks Tubby still has something left in the tank I will trust him. My fear however is that Tubby does just enough this year to secure another 2-3 years of missing the dance or going to the NIT (which is all Tubby has done thus far) and we miss out on Tyus, Vaughn, and Travis which are MN kids that could really turn the program around. Norwood obviously knows how to run a basketball program though so whatever he thinks is best I will support.

Regarding the Tubby throwing kids under the bus; my point was he has continued to do this. Even if he was in the right with the Rodney situation (which is entirely possible) he still didn't handle it like he should have. There's no reason that should be going public which is more on Rodney than Tubby obviously but Tubby needs to talk to his players. It seems he thinks he's above doing that or he simply doesn't relate to his players. When the whole Cobb, Joseph, White, and Iverson transfer thing went down he ABSOLUTELY through those guys under the bus. He's supposed to be a professional and to ignore that would be stupid. Saying it was "addition by subtraction" is classless.
