What player is poised for a break-out season?

What player is poised for a break-out season?

Who will be this season's break-out player.  I think last year was Carter on defense.

Lets be honest I think a lot of people had written off MC  going into his Sr. season seeing as he had struggled in his first 3 seasons and was seemingly in coach Kill's doghouse.

On offense it would have gone to Barker,  because well no one expected the walk-on to play so well. But he decided to leave the team so I move on to another WSR Derrick Engel.

Engel really I thought was a more explosive WR than Barker the problem was our QB's couldn't hit our guys when they were open. And quite honestly I saw Engel getting open a lot early in the season and he showed that he was a very good route runner and had speed to get YAC.

Honorable Mentions would have to go to Ekpe and Kirkwood.  Never expected Ekpe to see the field last year and he ended up playing very well as a True Freshman.  Kirkwood almost got a 1000 yards on the season  rushing the ball and really turned out be a workhorse back and really carried the offense when we had no offense late in the season.

Back to the topic at hand who will breakout this year for the Gophers?

ok so the obvious choice will be Nelson

take him out Engle is a good bet but i am thinking someone like goodger might be a sleeper.
Nelson will need to find a TE and Goodger seems logical '

defensviely i think Hags will be his same old self.  but my guess is that Keith shows more progress and steps out as a dominate force

One of the JUCO DB's brought in from last years class. Someone like Shabazz or Boddy or Baltazar are going to have to step up to fill the void now gone.

Offensively I'll go with Nugget if he counts. I think he could take a lot of reps away from Kirkwood and be that 1st and 2nd down downhill type of back.

Defensively I'd have to go with Shabazz. He looked good in the bowl game. Good speed and instincts.

Please tell me why you're using the nickname Nugget?

The story is that when Rodrick Williams was up here on his official visit, they went to McDonald's at some point, and he put down like 50 chicken mcnuggets and the guys just started calling him nugget. Cool nickname, IMO.

This is going to be a very popular pick this fall. The staff is already beginning to re-hype Jamel. I have yet to read if he'll be doing anything in the spring but my bet would be he participates but is withheld from contact and is 100% ready this fall. Especially now that Andre's future is in doubt and he won't be here for spring practice.
