Stupid Coaching

Stupid Coaching

53 seconds TT has 1 TO and you throw it at your own 35. Run a draw and punt.  They have 45 seconds left with no timeouts. i have watched coaches chok all bowl season. Coach to the book and you will win. People think Saban is a great coach, no. He just does not do stupid stuff and stays with the game plan. He never beats his self.banghead

RE: Stupid Coaching

It wasn't that bad of a call. It was gutsy. And if we had receivers and a QB with some experience it probably would have worked. You learn and you move on. I disagree with it but I understand it.

Wow. Am I taking a loss better than N8? First time for everything. Being under 21 is a factor no doubt.

the loss, i can handle. it's the folks that don't know anything about gopher football who come along with their two posts about how the coaching sucks that i cannot.

True. They'll dissapear soon enough though. I hope. Thats the downside of playing in a crazy game.

Re: Stupid Coaching

Narrow minded. You can't put this loss on the  last play call??! Great play call? No. You want to win, they were not stopping TT, go for it!

8 something left in game, Gray goes in and passes 2 times. Misses open receivers. He threw, what, 2 passes in a parttime duty before this? Nelson played the majority of the game, either have him in to make those passes or play Gray and run. That, to me, was the game.

The Gophers, thanks in large part to a great game by Michael Carter, had numerous opportunities to finish this game!

Agreed. Gray is a great teammate and seems like a great human being but he seems to really battle the nerves. He overthrough a few guys in the UNLV game that made that game close and he badly missed two guys on key possessions tonight. I think he'll make it in the NFL as a WR or TE but he just didn't have it as a QB which of course could be the rust or the lack of development that Brewster's staff was capable of. Either way I thank him for his hard work and loyalty and wish him nothing but the best but I'm excited to see what we can do with Nelson.

Doogie is suggesting kill fire an assistant to hire a "game-day manager". I just lost a lot of respect for him.

Re: Stupid Coaching

Really?! I thought they did exactly what they needed to do. They owned the clock, kept TT offense off the field.

I applauded the gameplan...........execution was a different matter. For the most part, they did what they had planned on doing.
Doogie, I have never liked, is an idiot!

Saturday, 29th, @ 10:00 AM a Gopher Footall postseason report will be on Kfan1130 till noon.

Re: Stupid Coaching

We were aggressive. Poor execution by Nelson throwing that ball where it should never have even been considered to be thrown, but TT was going to get the ball if we had run the ball there, anyway. I agree we should've played for OT, but I applaud the effort going for the win. No complaints there.

Re: Stupid Coaching

Defensively the Gophers continue to have great in game adjustments.  outside of the last two drives of the second half the gophers shut a high potent offense down.

offensively we continue to blame execution for the inability to move the ball.  the lack of offensive adjustments continues to puzzle me.  it seemed like we tried to move around a lot but ran the same play.  Gray over throwing two wide (i mean wide) open receivers on a 4th quarter drive that could have sealed the victory hurt badly.

the defensive played well enough to win and the offense played half a game IMO

Re: Stupid Coaching

The offense didn't execute when it needed to down the stretch.  Our QB's missed open wr's all night and you can't do that especially late in games like this one.  Gray had DCT wide open for an easy first down with about 7 minutes left in the game and he over threw him by a mile.

At the end of the game there, I like the aggressiveness saying we're going to go for it but Nelson made a freshman mistake where instead tucking the ball and running for a yard or two or just throwing the ball away he decided to throw up prayer and we all know how that went.
Shhh..... My Common Sense is Tingling.

RE: Stupid Coaching

We have to remember that freshmen make mistakes. So Nelson should shoulder some of the blame, but what about Kill for putting him in that situation having him in the game at that moment or Limegrover for calling that play.

Yeah, I am upset that we lost; but I could just as easily blamed Epping for his back to back personal fouls took us out of a good drive, gave them the ball back and they scored just before the half. That was at a minimum a 7 point swing and could have been a 14 point swing.

RE: Stupid Coaching

I thought the all-out-blitz on third and five or whatever was a terrible call. You have an offense that lives off of throwing slants and other extremely quick routes and you put all eleven on the line of scrimmage?

All in all I loved the ground and pound Maryland I offense and hopefully we can keep it up along with the defense we had last night and Nelson develops enough to become the highly efficient game manager we need.

We have to remember that by Bowl games we dont have freshmen on the team any longer.  That is the troubling point to the game yesterday.  Nelson needed to show more for me to be totally excited for next year.  Doesnt mean that He can't work hard and become a elite QB but teh freshmen mistakes should not happen after Spring practice/ Fall practice/ 6 games/ plus those valuable 15 practices post season.

Anybody wonder why gray was not used as a WR much?  All we heard is "you can't leave that type of talent on the sidelines"  well with Nelson in as QB i think i saw only once was Gray in the game too and was used as a decoy.

how big would it have been if Shahbaz could have come down with the INT.  i sunk down there and knew it was over.

Re: Stupid Coaching

This should be a friendly dicussion among passionate fans. biggrin
We are all entitled to our opinions. The Gophers did not lose because of one bad play at the end of the game. In the big picture, there are many positives to take from the game, however we share our disappointment from a game they should have easily won. I look at the body of work from this game and others I have watched. The defense played masterfully in the second half (except for a missed jam on the last TD and playing a soft zone on that drive). The defensive side makes great adjustments and has played very well. The offense, play calling, and in-game strategy are another matter. I saw a team that went into "play not to lose" mode instead of playing aggressive and making them pay for mistakes. In the 4thQ, TT had 8 or 9 guys in the box!! Essentially saying you will not run because we believe you cannot throw consistently enough to beat us. There had to be deep balls all day long against that front.. and what did we do?? RUN. Its not like we were at our own 20-25 at the end of the game ;), we were on their side of the field! How about going for it on 4th down earlier, when we could have pinned them deep?? I could go on and on about the terrible play calling and strategy, but you take from it what you will. I watched every game this year and that did not change (conservative, few adjustments, and puzzling play calls). I for one do not believe this offensive mindset is B1G worthy, but next year is the year this staff will prove who they really are.
