Barker To Transfer
Apparently AJ Barker will be transferring according to a tweet he made 30 minutes ago he is done playing at Minnesota and will be looking to transfer to a new school to play out his final year next year. And then there's this his letter to Jerry Kill which he posted on tumblr. This looks ugly. Shhh..... My Common Sense is Tingling.

This is not good at all. He would easily be our #1 heading into next year. I can't decide which side I'm on. I can't believe that Barker wouldn't get a scholarship, but to make this public in this fashion is embarrassing not only our program, but himself too. If you were a D1 coach, would you take him in after reading this stuff and how it seems he may be a bit of an ego problem? I wouldn't.

It'd be interesting to hear what the coaching staff would have to say about this but of course that won't happen.
First and foremost you don't post that online. Transfers should happen behind closed doors, this posting it online is overboard and quite honestly makes all parties look bad in one way or another.

If the things that Barker say are true, and not just a bitter tirade, then Coach Kill and his staff should be ashamed, and even jobs should be called into question. Questioning a STUDENT athlete's drive is one thing, but insulting his religious character, using bigotry, and demeaning him just to drive up your own reputation, is beyond regrettable. I hope, for Jerry Kill's sake, that some of these accusations are false and added in anger, and not true. Because, if they are true, this is not a coach that i want developing young football players, let alone developing young people, at the University of Minnesota.

A J Barker seems like a nice kid but making that letter public in no way helps him any...i question his maturity... whos right whos wrong idk...i hope they can still kiss and makeup

well it appears that about 75% of gopherhole has labeled the kid clinically insane. that place is a sewer.
also, this was just tweeted by SB nation, so this might overshadow game number 12.

Tough for me to form an opinion on this all right now as it is completely one-sided. I'd like to believe that there is another side to the story and that Kill isn't that manipulative guy that he is being portrayed as in the blog post.
It will be interesting to see how all of this shakes out in the next day or two leading up to Tuesday's press conference.

Based on Barker's letter, I'm backing Kill on this one. Barker comes off sounding like a prima don who's always been told he is special by his parents and now can't take it when some tells him to get more effort going. He refused to get an MRI because he doesn't want to know the truth about his ankle (not too bright) and instead opps for acupuncture treatment. Then he gets upset when Kill calls him out for not following the rehab program. As evidence about how bad Kill is, he quotes his friend's mom, right, there's someone that knows Kill first hand... Barker will get offers as a walkon and maybe even get a scholarship, but he's going to have a real tough time trying to land a graduate assistant slot with a coaching staff. His goal of becoming a coach took a serious hit when he posted that letter.

WOW why would AJ lie? I am leaning towards the kid on this one. If proven true by others stepping forward and confirming Kills tirade in front of everyone then Jerry just lose me as a fan. you can motivate in many ways but not like this in 2012, I have coached kids at a much younger age and you do not need to go where AJ is saying Jerry did. very sad day in Gopher land as this could be the start of the fall for this regime. |

He won't get as many offers as some on here think.
A) Kill is highly respected in coaching community,
B) A letter like that to previous coach and airing it out on all of innerwebz won't impress any coach (little alone future employers),
C) he really is very avg, but calls himself "the real deal", and
D) give me one coach that doesn't manipulate

Here is a statement from Norwood Teague on the situation.
"Coach Kill received an email from A.J. Barker today notifying the coach that he has quit the team. Coach Kill tried reaching out to A.J. after receiving the email, but was unable to connect with him. We understand A.J.'s frustration with his injury, and we regret that he has chosen to leave the team on these terms. Our concern first and foremost is student athletes and we wish A.J. well."
