Bowl Scenarios

Bowl Scenarios

For sake of conversation, lets say that KSU has actually turned the corner and take OU at home and beat an overrated TT this weekend to finish at 8-4 and top half of the Big 12.

Baylor OSU and Texas would battle it out for the top 3 selections - Fiesta, Cotton, Alamo....

At a 4-5 Big 12 spot would we rather have the Wild Wings or Holiday? Personally traveling to PHX is a lot easier and I like the idea of matching up with the Huskers in Tempe vs a Pac 12 in San Diego.

Another thing that I was wondering....say OU and KSU are at identical records in the Big 12. Am I correct that the bowl games are not necessarily required to choose in the order of ranking. That said, Is KSU screwed in the Nebraska scenario as the Wild Wings bowl will choose them over us regardless at the idea of a Nebraska OU matchup or would our fan following make us a better choice?

Just random questions on a slow Monday!

Nothing much to contribute on this one, except that I could care less if we NEVER play those quitters again.  F*** 'em.

I was looking at Navy's record. They are 4 and 4. I would love to see the Cats mix it up with Navy in a bowl. I'd wear a Cats sweat shirt, a Navy hat and cheer all game long! I would ultimately want a Wildcat victory, but I would be in 7th heaven!

Go Cats! Go Navy!

We need to concentrate on winning one at a time and then we'll worry about which bowl.

RE: Bowl Scenarios

The current ESPN bowl projection has us playing Minnesota (Big12 #6 vs. Big10 #6) in the Texas Bowl.

So, we have some winning to do before we can get into the #4/5 bowl games, but it's definitely possible.

Buffalo Wild Wings puts Big12 #4 against Big10 #4/5 (currently projected as #4 Nebraska)
Holiday puts Big12 #5 against Pac12 #3/4 (currently projected as #4 Arizona State if Oregon makes BCS champ game)

Re: Bowl Scenarios

Also, I believe this is the last year we're going to be affiliated with the Holliday Bowl in San Diego.

I live in San Diego.  If we do end up with a bowl (HOPEFULLY! biggrin), and it's the Holliday Bowl, I promise to provide a long recommendation of places to eat, places to visit, and other things that someone visiting San Diego should know.

The places to eat part will be awesome!!  I love food, and have hit up all the best restaurants in my city, both cheap and expensive.  You KSU fans would be in for a treat!!! biggrin

Technically we were in Glendale for the Fiesta last year, that's opposite sides of the Phoenix area.

I'd go again but Houston or San Diego would be cool too.

If you're visiting SD, send me a PM, and I can also point you in the right direction. I love SD.

Re: Bowl Scenarios

Looking at Baylor, TU, OK, OKS, schedules, they are all back loaded.  I could see one of these teams loosing three more conference games.  If we can win out our mind set will be so different about this team.  It will leap frog us past one of these 4 and it will set up next year with great expectations.

That's why I said "just for conversation" I hope my bowl scenario post doesn't distract the players too much this weekend! haha (sarcasm)

Re: Bowl Scenarios

And no one really responded. Are the bowl's required to select by ranking or can they choose anyone that is bowl eligible?

For instance, it would make a lot more sense financially speaking for say the Cotton to choose a 4th place Oklahoma over a 2nd seed Baylor just based on TV's and fan following. I have always been a little confused about that.

Re: Bowl Scenarios

The bowls are not required to pick based off of Big 12 pecking order. They usually tend to go off Big12 finishing order but it does not always happen that way. The Fiesta will always be conference champs but after that the bowls will try to go with whoever can create the most interesting matchup and sale the most tickets. So say that OSU only loses to Baylor and finished second in the conference and Texas finishes one game behind at 3rd. The Cotton Bowl could skip OSU and go with Texas. That is just a hypothetical situation that could happen. If your team is known to travel well and has any kind of national rep the bowl probably wont pass you up.

This ^^^

The Cotton Bowl will be hard pressed not to take Texas, even if they end up 3rd

Texas has not been to the Cotton Bowl since '03.  Cotton Bowl would LOVE to have them.

I can understand that, especially in the winter.  My wife has family in southern California and I remember going down there for Christmas a few years back.  We actually went swimming outside on January 2nd!  Then the next day we get off the plane in St. Louis to snow and bitter cold weather.  mad

I have never been to the Holiday Bowl, so that would be my vote, too.

Re: Bowl Scenarios

KSU could win out. KSU only has 3 loses in the Big 12.  If KSU would win out they actually have a chance at 3rd and 2nd might be a long shot but they might have a chance there but a fairly long chance.

Re: Bowl Scenarios

KSU could finish 3rd and is realistic chance, winning out though would have to happen most likely.  UT or Baylor will lose a conference game.  OSU still has OU, BU, UT. OU has BU, KSU, OSU and TTech.  Bu still has UT, OSU, OU and TTech.  UT still has OSU, TTech and Baylor.  If KSU wins out TTech would have 3 losses along with KSU, KSU would place higher than them because KSU would have a win over TTech.  If KSU wins out they would finish at least 5th in the conference.  OU would have 2 losses.  If OU loses 3 games then KSU would move up to 4th since they beat them.  I think KSU finishes at least 5th, Texas Tech has a brutal stretch. UT.  3rd isnt real far fetch either if KSU wins out.  what are the bowls for 3rd through 5th?

RE: Bowl Scenarios

So that would make us prime candidates for Holiday, Wild Wings, and worst case, Texas Bowl. And based on what was mentioned above about how other than the Fiesta the bowls can select whoever they want to create interesting matchups, I cant imagine the Cotton going anywhere but Texas, which would leave OU Baylor and US (considering OSU has the easiest stretch left and are my pick to win out) to fight over the Alamo, Holiday, and Wild Wings Bowls. Alamo chooses first and would go with the winner of Thursdays game would be my guess. So that would leave the loser and the Cats for the Holiday and Wild Wings.
I am hoping for a KSU - Nebraska matchup in Tempe.
