Notre Dame Statement: Manti Te’o
On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te’o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators.

Incredible. I don't think it ends there. How is Te'o not involved? He supposedly had met this girl after a game with Stanford. Also, it was said that Te'o had tweets or Facebook posts that have since been deleted with those implicated. If ND knew on 12/26 how come it was not brought to the light of day at that time? Was ND, Te'o or others sympathetic to the program involved in a pathetic attempt for publicity? Would it ever have come out if not for Deadspin?
It makes me even sadder that CK was robbed of the Heisman. What a joke.

September to now and the press is just not finding out all this about the girl/non-girl? No one attended a funeral?
It is not all about catching tipped passes that were defended by your teammate while you were out of position. Te'o may be the biggest hype case in college football history.

What the eff? This is bizarre, and IMO, he had to of known it was all a scam. You don't talk on national tv and in sports articles about your girlfriend dying of cancer, and you never knew her other than twitter? This bozo needs to go somewhere and disappear. I would love it if he now did not get drafted.

This, coupled with Manziel's escapades just makes me wonder what ever happened to truth in character and truth in media.
I remember a time when these incidents were brought to the public light and truly exposed for what they were, now everything is covered up.

Wojciechowski on ESPN just said that he asked if he could contact his gf's family and teo told him no. Then he asked if he could have some pictures of her and teo told him no.

ESPN and ND are certainly promoting this as if Manti did not participate in the hoax and he only knew her via online, but there's too many questions in their "relationship" that he talked about after her death for him to now claim this was a mass effort to defraud Manti. Lots of facts remain to be established about this, and it is fairly easy to manipulate social (and other) media to devious purposes, yet -
Surely, there is no way that Manti and Notre Dame could have been involved! He and his institution are paragons of what remains pure and honest about the virtues and values of competitive sports and participating scholar-athletes for the benefit of our broader society! For them, it surely isn't about the money, or national exposure, or undue influence!
