My public high school in Jax, FL is #4 in the country.

My cousin just graduated from there and is their valedictorian.

What a poorly drafted article and poorly named list. That list is for PUBLIC schools ONLY.

If this was a list of both public and private schools you would be hard pressed to find a public school on the list.

Don't expect much more from TaTown than low-rent, self-referential comedic relief.  Well, fail.  You should expect lots of fail.

What's amazing is that Texas sucks so badly despite having so many schools on the list.

It doesn't seem like any points were deducted for abundance of the highly addictive superweed and heroin sweeping JOCO high schools.

The point of what?  The list released called it a list of America's Best High Schools- nowhere in the title did it mention private schools weren't eligible.

Going only by the names of the schools, it looks like Texas (and a few other states) just pull the smart kids out and give them their own school - with a curriculum based on their strengths, no less.

Hard to compare that to a regular public school that gets the usual mix of kids based on district lines. Are those Texas schools really teaching that much better or are their classes just devoid of dumbasses?

Nothing lamer Stinkey???  How about dropping $40K a year on your child's college education only to find out they would have been better off learning to change oil at Jiffy Lube?

Side note:  feels good to know that the high school with the noblest and most mighty of all high school mascots, the regal Cougar, made the list.

Not at my school.  The AP European History class I took was harder than almost any class I ever took at KU.  AP Chem I & II wasn't easy either.  Though I didn't think AP English was all that tough.

I think most of the schools at the top of the list are magnet schools that can be more selective than normal public schools.  I notice Florida has a bunch in the top 50 and from what I've heard from people I know down there, the public schools compare poorly to those here in Kansas.  However, the magnet schools are considered on par or close to the top private schools.  My niece tried to get into #46 but didn't make it because she comes from a very nice neighborhood.  The charter school selects its students but it is required to have a student body that is somewhat geographically representative of the entire school district.   So, it is more difficult for high achieving kids from good neighborhoods to get in there than the top private schools because there are fewer slots available to them.  After missing the cut on the magnet, my niece had to settle for arguably the top private school in the Miami area.  She enjoyed it, but my sister and her husband didn't enjoy the bill.

I'm right with you....hated english.  I took AP.  IB math sure.  Many schools didn't have IB I don't believe.

What's odd is why the local media isn't highlighting the that the #1 school on this list in the metro is in an urban area.  Too easy to just keep up the "urban schools suck"  bit I guess for some....and fluff up the suburban parent readers.

You're right.  There are only a few schools in the state of Kansas that offer an IB diploma.  Like five, or something.  I think in the SM district, it's East and Northwest.

Private school = needing validation.
I know several people from Pem and Barstow who had no great funding, and plenty of wealthy parents with kids at SME or the Blue Valleys.

How about my public school kids and yours compare family tax returns?  Who's the pauper?

Gotta let a few charity cases into the fine private institutions.  The regular students need to spend some time around the masses they will employ some day.  They need to see how the other side lives.
